- The story tells of the adventures of an Italian nobleman in the time of the Venetian republic. He was denounced as a traitor to the Council of Ten and had to flee for his life. He took the family treasure with him, burying it in an old well in the courtyard of a neighboring village. The prologue, which tells of this adventure, is provided with titles in the old Venetian script harmonizing with the costumes and the buildings of the day. Centuries elapsed between the prologue and the story proper. The latter is laid in modern Venice. A descendant of the Italian nobleman, a beautiful woman named Foscarina comes back to the halls of her ancestors and quite by accident discovers the secret of the buried family jewels. A prowling band of outlaws hears about the existence of the jewels at the same time and by a series of clever maneuvers gets possession of the precious heirlooms. Foscarina thereupon engages the services of a world-famous detective named Argo to ferret out the evildoers and to recover the property. A keen battle of the wits ensues, first the plotters gain an advantage and then the detective overmatches them, but the end finds justice triumphant. The gems are found and restored to the owner, while the schemers are turned over to the police.
- Hubert loves Blanche, the daughter of the Duke of Monterbo, and for sometime their wedding has been looked forward to by intimate friends. But Hubert meets Helen, a beautiful sister of one of his friends, and she immediately supplants Blanche in Hubert's affection. Reluctantly he writes a letter to Blanche, telling her that it is best that they break their engagement. Blanche receives the letter and is heartbroken. About this time Jules Card, an artist, arrives at the villa of the Duke for a visit. He and Blanche are often seen together and she confides her story to him. Their continued friendship ripens into love on Jules' part and he asks her to be his wife. Sending him a note, Blanche explains that she has for him nothing more than the highest respect, but if he is satisfied with that, she would accept him. They are married, and although apparently happy, Blanche cannot forget her former love. Hubert now married to Helen, is out for a climb in the Alps when he becomes afflicted with mountain sickness and falls over the cliff. Blanche and Jules passing in that vicinity bear his cry and rush to his aid. He is found in a critical condition and at her request is brought to their home. Here figuratively speaking, Hubert is cast at the feet of the girl he cast off. Helen, anxious about her husband's absence, goes in search of him and is met by Blanche who brings her to Hubert's bedside. Jules does not learn of Hubert's identity and Blanche promises Hubert that she will say nothing of their former love affair for the sake of Helen. However, Helen tells Blanche how happy she is with Hubert and the picture closes as we see the supreme happiness of one girl and the dejection of the other.
