- World War II is over and the boys from the town of River Run, Ohio, are coming home. It seems that life is slowly going back to normal, but war has changed everything and they will never be the same again.
- Caroline finds out about Gina and Charlie's secret romance; Seeing Ginger on a date with another man, Jeff cozies up to Caroline to make her jealous; Mr. Sloan arranges a Detroit bus trip to a baseball game with Judy.
- Linda is tempted by an offered management position just as the workers rebel over news of Ruth Sloan's new fur. Ruth accepts Gina and the baby into her home, and Mike Sloan tells Caroline that he'll be ready to repay the Haileys' kindness to his daughter-in-law.
- Abe gets threatening hate messages over Robert's interracial marriage; Robert gets accepted into college; Ginger's job requires her to go on a date with a lucky contestant which causes conflict with Jeff; Mr. Sloan and Judy bond over their love of Indians baseball.
- Jeff's hometown debut with the Indians brings everyone out to the ballgame. Meanwhile, Hank feels alienated from his family after learning that Al will soon be part of it. Grandma Davis plays matchmaker for Robert, who has another gal in mind.

Jeff debates if he should cheat on Ginger with Judy, once his teammates tell him that whoever Judy likes ends up on the team. The Sloans back the Union into a corner after Caroline mentions to them that there is no fund to pay for a strike.

- On the eve of his 49th birthday, Mr. Sloan gets annoyed with people perceiving him as old; with an outbreak of polio, everyone is on edge about contracting the disease; Abe begins to experience memory loss.
- Television seems to be the wave of the future, which could signal the end of Ginger and Jeff's radio show. A local sportswriter receives kudos after Judy ghostwrites his column on the Indians. Suspicions of infidelity lurk at the Sloan home.
- Ginger sees her ticket to stardom when a dance contest that gives the winners a screen test arrives in town. Caroline convinces Charlie that they should enter, then tries to rig the contest in their favor. Sarah takes over Thanksgiving preparations without asking Anne first. Al ambushes Anne into dancing with him in the contest. The Sloans decide to make friends with their employees in the hope that they will reject the union.
- Caroline realizes that she's in over her head with the Sloans when they pressure her to find out who the Union's spy is. Charlie, Robert, and Al think there is a traitor in the union. Jeff scrambles to keep Ginger in Florida after she calls off their engagement. Hank and Linda are at each other's throats because of the lock out. Abe finds a unique way to get back at the Sloans. A member of the Metcalf family pays the price for the hostility over the plant lock out.
- Al lies to the workers about union money, trying to pull them into a strike. Caroline tries to dissuade Charlie from participating in the strike by telling him that she's pregnant. Anne is determined to raise her baby Catholic. Judy Owens moves to town.
- Caroline tries to help Jeff with his stage fright; the Sloans continue with their attempts to break up Charlie and Gina; struggling with Anne's medical costs, Al asks his mother to borrow money; Ginger has doubts about her relationship with Arthur.
- Mike Sloan, Sr. tries to keep the workers from organising when union organiser Al Kahn comes to town. Jeff and Ginger date publicly. Abe plots to get his job back by bringing Gina back into the Sloan family.
- The Sloans arrive at the train station expecting Mike Jr. but meet his new Italian bride Gina instead. Ginger is shocked to find out her fiancee Charlie has married Caroline, an English woman, while he was overseas. Abe and Gloria are thrilled that Robert's home early, but are surprised by his angry attitude. Jeff and Sarah try to figure out a way to tell his brother Hank that they are in love with each other. Linda tries to move on with her life after losing her boyfriend Mike Jr. to Gina, and losing her job to the incoming GIs.
- With Ruth out of town, Mr. Sloan tries to discretely make time with Judy but keeps running into obstacles; Anne returns home from the hospital with her and the family struggling to adjust to her disabled state; Charlie takes a second job as a door to door salesman.
- Gina has her baby, who is born with a serious illness. Anne attempts to reconcile with Al via Christmas cookies.
- Hank's wedding day has arrived, but Linda can't go because her supervisor refuses to let her take the day off. Jeff has made peace with Sarah and Hank's marriage. Ginger tries to find a date for wedding, so that Charlie will think that she is over him. Abe and Gloria are fired when the Sloans learn that they took Gina in. Charlie wonders why Caroline is not pregnant yet.
- Jeff and Ginger seek advice regarding their delayed wedding (and ongoing challenge to stay abstinent); Charlie confides in Gina about his suspicions of Caroline; Abe and Gloria disagree about Robert's plans to go overseas and pursue his lost love; Hank goes MIA for Al and Anne's wedding.
- Abe and Gloria face the daunting task of asking the Sloans for an advance on their salaries so that they can start their own business; Charlie finds out the truth about Caroline's pregnancy; Anne is advised by her pastor to move up her wedding to Al; Jeff and Ginger cannot agree on any of their wedding details.
- Al continues to pursue Anne, but she rebuffs his advances. Jeff and Ginger prepare for their trip and the screen test. The union works to fight against the racial tension at the plant caused by the Sloans hiring African-American workers.
- Ginger sticks it out in California but Jeff heads back to Ohio. Anne crosses religious lines to date Al. The Davises go into business for themselves.
- Ruth finds proof that Gina became pregnant before she and Mike Jr. were married. Gloria is grieved by Robert's attitude towards the death of Mike Jr. and that Mike and Ruth dismissed Mike Jr.'s request to have her is at his funeral. Sarah tries to make Jeff believe that they really don't love each other. Hank convinces Charlie to do one more favor for their war buddy Mike Jr.
- Jeff departs for spring training in Florida. The Davises face discrimination in getting a loan for their business.
- Lacemaker Gina is unnerved by terrifying flashbacks to her days in a Nazi concentration camp. Charlie is baffled by her mood swings. Meanwhile, saved items hold treasured memories for her grandmother, who doesn't want to impose when she's asked to move in with Abe and Gloria.
- Jeff goes on a travelling bus tour sponsored by Ginger's company and gets annoyed with the strict rules; Caroline rides along the same bus trip which will take her to Reno to get a quickie divorce; the Sloans find out about Abe and Gloria's business venture; Al and Anne argue about the baby's name.
- Linda gets a new view of her old boyfriend, Mike Sloan Jr., when old Army buddy Bill Caswell arrives in town. The Davis family searches for a misplaced gall bladder. Anne and Al's relationship goes a step further. Jeff is accepted as a rookie ballplayer.
- The Kahns take a romantic getaway weekend but get annoyed when the Sloans are staying in the adjoining room; Fearing that he may be on the rebound, Judy reluctantly agrees to go out with Jeff; Charlie moves back in with Caroline in the hopes that it will force her to divorce him; Abe and Gloria struggle to make rent on their restaurant.
- Mike tells his angry wife that he's afraid of being blamed in the death of the writer Nadolski, and that Judy Owen suspects him. Jeff's irritated when Linda begins dating the newspaper editor.
- Anne and Al try to fix Gina up; Linda's story makes a weekly newsletter and lands her an editorial position; the Sloans consider investing in a housing development after learning that they are already paying subsidies for lower income housing ; Robert returns from overseas with a wife; Ginger gets a job performing a radio ad for tomato juice live over the air.
- After getting a note from an extortionist demanding $10,000 from them, the Sloans go undercover to scope out the blackmailer; Linda continues to investigate the Sloans' possible improprieties with the development of Heritage Village.
- After a chat with Ruth, Gina refuses Charlie's marriage proposal because she wants her baby, Emma, to grow up in a Jewish home with a Jewish father who knows all the customs. After imagining what life would be like if the Sloans were their housekeepers, Abe and Gloria decide to quit their job with the Sloans and focus on their café, where a cop's visits are driving Gloria crazy. Jeff tries to hide his jealousy when Arthur starts to make appearances on "Fine Foods Family Hour" with Ginger.
- Jeff is surprised when Coach Zelnick offers him a second chance to try out for the team, not knowing who put him up to it. Ginger finalizes her wedding plans. Al decides to go back east to find work since no one want to hire him. Charlie realises that it's going to be harder than he thought to convert to Judaism. Mike and Ruth decide to divorce.
- The Sloans try to pay Gina to leave town when they learn that she's pregnant, touching off a swell of support for the widowed war bride. Jeff's anonymous love poem to his brother's sweetheart goes astray.
- Union activity at the plant divides the town. Linda tries to talk her brother Hank out of becoming management while their mother confronts organiser Al about the danger he's brought to her family. Robert Davis joins the union after being attacked by racist co-workers, but has to fight his father on the issue.
- Caroline is angry when her husband Charlie jealously attacks Jeff over Ginger. Jeff and Ginger travel to Toledo for a pregnancy test while Caroline strikes out at her husband by leaving town with a travelling salesman.
- Gina finds a place, unaware that it was arranged by her hated former father-in-law. Charlie tells Ginger he married the wrong woman, but continues to make plans to start a family. Linda and Hank fight but manage to make improvements at the plant.
