- Behind The Groove: The Black Ice Documentary is a story that mirrors other stories of artists and musicians that are all looking for that dream of fame and success in the entertainment industry, but for some reason or another, just don't get to the highest plateau. This is the story of (5) kids from Watts California who aspire to be singing stars like their idols The Temptations and The Dramatics. Black Ice aka The Soul Sonics, we're able to record (3) studio albums without gaining the success and notoriety of other groups in the 70's and 80's. They all went to the Historic Watts Mafundi Institute and were taught singing, dancing and acting by celebrities and entertainers such as Roger Mosley, Marla Gibbs, Paula Kelly, Diane Carroll, James Earl Jones and many more. Black Ice was signed to HDM Records in 1979 and released their self titled, debut album featuring their first single, "Making Love In The Rain". Lead vocals sung by Ralph Lars. They went on to record (3) albums in total including "I Judge The Funk" and the hit single off the group's 3rd album "I Just Want To Hold You", which was also released by R&B group The The Chi Lites. Black Ice recorded countless songs with great musicians, like Al McKay of Earth, Wind and Fire, James Gadson , drummer of over 500 gold and platinum singles, bass guitar player, Ricky Minor, who was the band Director for Whitney Houston, and has won numerous awards in music and television. Despite all of the adversity, they are still being revered and their music is still being played today all across the world through TV and movie projects. This film is told through the life experiences of executive producer, Frank Willis, Jr, whose father, Frank Willis Sr. was in the group and tells the story from the group themselves and people that still love and adore them to this day.
