  • The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) currently has about 10,000 members, all involved in television work that ranges from running studios to editing soundtracks. Members are organized in 27 peer groups representing their field of work. (as of July 2000)

ATAS Broadcast Journalism Award
  • The award had been given before this field of television branched into the News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

Bob Hope Humanitarian Award
  • The award has been created to recognize 'Bob Hope''s pioneer status in the industry and his long career of humanitarian work.

Historical Timeline

1949
  • Only shows that have been produced in Los Angeles County, California and broadcast on the four TV stations in Los Angeles are eligible for the awards.
  • Rudy Vallee is scheduled to emcee the show but he is called out of town and Walter O'Keefe substitutes.

1950
  • The names of the winners are leaked to the press early on the morning of the show.
  • Live TV broadcasts from New York are only seen as far west as St. Louis, Missouri. In order for the show to be seen on the remainder of the country, Kinescope prints are made and sent to those cities outside of the live broadcast regions. The Kinescope process consists of filming the show as it appears on a TV set with either a 16-mm or 35-mm camera and then shipping prints of film to other cities.

1957
  • The year 1957 marks the first Emmy Awards show to be broadcast in color.

2000
  • Traditionally ATAS asked for volunteers for judging from the pool of its members. Volunteers would gather for an all-day screening session. From this year on ATAS will allow at home voting by viewing video cassettes. The Creative Arts Emmys are not affected by this rule change. Only the categories included in the Primetime Emmys - major acting, writing, directing and overall series awards - will be judged at home.

2001
  • The awards are presented to shows that were broadcast between 1 June 2000 and 31 May 2001.
  • The primetime Emmy awards ceremony is postponed from 16 September due to the assault on the World Trade Center and other facilities on 11 September. On 7 October the ceremony is again postponed due to the US air strikes in Afghanistan, this time only hours before the event with no new date given. By this time ATAS and US TV network CBS already have lost millions of dollars. When shortly afterwards Don Mischer Productions, who had been producing the show for seven times previously, stated that they were unable to continue as producers due to other commitments, the celebration of the 2001 primetime Emmys became uncertain at all.

2002
  • Usually announced at the Creative Arts ceremonies, the award is this year presented during the September 22 NBC Emmy Awards telecast.
  • The awards are presented to shows that were originally broadcast 6:00pm to 2:00am between 1 June 2001 and 31 May 2002.

  • The awards are presented to shows that were originally broadcast 6:00pm to 2:00am between 1 June 2003 and 31 May 2004.

2005
