- The awards are given since 1997. Unlike the Academy Awards, which honor the achievements of production designers and set decorators only, the ADG awards recognize an expanded set of art department members (production designers, art directors and assistant art directors).
- The Art Directors Guild (ADG) was formerly known as The Society of Motion Picture and Television Art Directors (SMPTAD).
