- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.The one that started it all, although not the first Sci-Fi space movie, 2001 was among the first fact-based films of the time. Since there wasn't a whole lot known about the universe in '68 we can overlook a "landing" on Jupiter, but we can't overlook how great this movie was and how advanced the techniques used were for the time.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsChris PineZachary QuintoSimon PeggThe brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time. Not just a re-boot of the Star Trek franchise, this JJ Abrams film is an alternate history that will hopefully spawn more than just one sequel. Doesn't beat the originality and drama of the original films, but with some special effects and a really well done story it sure is more entertaining!
- DirectorPhilip KaufmanStarsSam ShepardScott GlennEd HarrisThe U.S. space program's development from the breaking of the sound barrier to selection of the Mercury 7 astronauts, from a group of test pilots with a more seat-of-the-pants approach than the program's more cautious engineers preferred.Forget the Science Fiction, this is all about science fact! Acting and story are all well done to put this down in history well beyond where that Clint Eastwood "Geriatrics in Space" film could attempt.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsTom HanksBill PaxtonKevin BaconNASA must devise a strategy to return Apollo 13 to Earth safely after the spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage putting the lives of the three astronauts on board in jeopardy. The true story of one of the darkest times in US Space history, the Tom Hanks led cast delivers a performance of the Apollo mission that didn't make it to the moon. "Houston we have a problem," but this film doesn't!
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.History will hold this movie as the revolutionary cinematic masterpiece that started it all. Low-budget and casting many unknowns, Lucas created a whole new universe that is still captivating fans over 30 years later!
- DirectorRobert WiseStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWhen an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth, Admiral James T. Kirk resumes command of the overhauled USS Enterprise in order to intercept it.The Original Star Trek film. Wonderfully done, despite lacking the technology by today's standards to cover every base, a great, genuine and well written story of the USS Enterprise and their mission to rescue Earth.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsNathan FillionGina TorresChiwetel EjioforThe crew of the ship Serenity try to evade an assassin sent to recapture telepath River.A continuation if you will of the cult hit TV show Fox undeservedly cancelled titled "Firefly," Serenity takes fans and newcomers alike on an awesome journey through Joss Wheden's Sci-fi/western mashup starring Castle's Nathan Fillion.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin. What good is it to scream in space when no one can hear you? Sigorney Weaver stars in this masterful original that began it all as an Alien terrorizes the crew of a space ship in the distant future. One of the classics.
- DirectorLeonard NimoyStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyTo save Earth from an alien probe, Admiral James T. Kirk and his fugitive crew go back in time to San Francisco in 1986 to retrieve the only beings who can communicate with it: humpback whales. The main reason this made the list is because of the science behind it. The first real movie to use somewhat fact-based (although it's really still theory) time travel. The acting, action, comedy, and pretty much everything else in this movie made it one of the better Star Trek adventures.
- DirectorPeter HyamsStarsRoy ScheiderJohn LithgowHelen MirrenA joint USA-Soviet expedition is sent to Jupiter to learn exactly what happened to the "Discovery" and its H.A.L. 9000 computer. The sequel to 2001, starring Roy Scheider (of Jaws fame), not nearly as great or epic as the original, but a good movie nonetheless, also shows how the US and Russia can work together, before the cold war actually ended and we found we really could be friends.
