- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsLubna AzabalMélissa Désormeaux-PoulinMaxim GaudetteTwins journey to the Middle East to discover their family history and fulfill their mother's last wishes. My favourite pick of the 2011 Oscar nominees for foreign film (along with Dogtooth). A haunting story, full of twists, notable for the remarkable performance of Azabal.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.Bravo! Encore! The best film I have seen for a very long time.
A spectacular film, through the brilliant mind of Aranofsky who never ceases to impress me. The story is gripping, with strong contrast between beauty and elegance with darkness and insanity. The score is really moving and adds to the suspense and the surprisingly the previously shallow Portman brings a rich in layer and depth performance worthy of many awards! - DirectorTom HooperStarsColin FirthGeoffrey RushHelena Bonham CarterThe story of King George VI, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.Hard to find a flaw in a film with incredible cast with award winning performances, beautiful cinematography, direction, costumes and musical score and an interesting story packed with drama, humour and suspense.
- DirectorBen AffleckStarsBen AffleckRebecca HallJon HammA proficient group of thieves rob a bank and hold an assistant manager hostage. Things begin to get complicated when one of the crew members falls in love with her.The Town is at its best whenever the bad guys are up to no good. The cast is very fitting indeed with Affleck and Renner as the key "bad guys", Hamm as their adversary and the always brilliant Postlethwaite as the don. Brought me memories of "Heat" and "Break point".
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.Script, cast, cinematography, score, visual effects, all superb! He brings fresh ideas, beautifully arranged, and takes you for a journey so enjoyable that leaves you longing for his next project. This is a blockbuster film for discerning viewers. I bow in the grace of Nolan.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioEmily MortimerMark RuffaloTeddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, two US marshals, are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient, where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place.Dark, atmospheric and hypnotic; a powerful cryptic mind-game; a story that seems to reveal both sides of the coin and you just don't really know which side is up... Scorcese in great form here with a great cast that delivers brilliantly under a haunting soundtrack.
- DirectorDavid MichôdStarsJames FrechevilleGuy PearceJoel EdgertonA seventeen-year-old navigates his survival amongst an explosive criminal family and the detective who thinks he can save him.A thriller from Australia with a muscle. Fantastic performances all around with young James Frecheville in only his second feature film delivers a mature performance and carries the film through an emotional roller-coaster of a Greek style tragedy. The inspired score adds to the drama and the direction of David Michod deserves many awards.
- DirectorSusanne BierStarsMikael PersbrandtTrine DyrholmMarkus RygaardThe lives of two Danish families cross each other, and an extraordinary but risky friendship comes into bud. But loneliness, frailty and sorrow lie in wait.In a better world they would make more movies like this one. A thought provoking film, provides no answers, let alone easy ones. Deservedly nominated for best foreign film at the Oscars and although it was not my favourite pick of the final five, it eventually went to win the statuette.
- DirectorDerek CianfranceStarsRyan GoslingMichelle WilliamsJohn DomanThe relationship of a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods. An intimate wrenching and emotionally honest portrait of the birth and decay of a relationship. Subtle direction and pitch perfect acting from both Gosling and Williams alike.
- DirectorGuillaume CanetStarsFrançois CluzetMarion CotillardBenoît MagimelA near-fatal accident leaves one friend in the hospital while the rest go on their annual vacation. But their secrets and personal grief threaten to drive them apart.A wonderful European gem with a great cast and a well written script built on intriguing characters with Woody Allen-esque obsessions that during their most recent vacation are confronted with truths which they would have rather not known. A tad longer than I would have liked it to be, it nevertheless left me with a warm feeling inside.
- DirectorNick WhitfieldStarsEd GaughanAndrew BuckleyTuppence MiddletonTwo exorcists literally remove the skeletons from the cupboards of people's homes. Some fairly embarrassing secrets are revealed along the way. A case where the skeletons have hidden themselves upends the lives of all those involved. An eccentricly Charlie Kaufman-esque award winning gem (Edinburgh festival) that is worth watching, uses large dozes of dry British humour to deliver a strangely heartfelt, and very funny story with a lead duo that can only be compared to Travolta/Jackson in Pulp Fiction.
- DirectorJuanita WilsonStarsNatasha PetrovicFedja StukanJelena JovanovaA young female teacher from Sarajevo who travels to a remote village. Soon after arriving, the village is attacked by a group of soldiers. The men are killed, the women separated from the children, and placed in a makeshift brothel.Only for those with a strong stomach, this Balkan gruellingly tough drama based on a 1999 novel by the Croatian writer Slavenka Drakulic, gives an unblinking look at sexual violence and degradation which albeit being exceptionally uneasy to watch, it is a film that really should be seen.
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsMark WahlbergChristian BaleAmy AdamsBased on the story of Micky Ward, a fledgling boxer who tries to escape the shadow of his more famous but troubled older boxing brother and get his own shot at greatness. It could have easily been yet another underdog boxing film we have seen before, but the subtle lead performance of Wahlberg, the flawless supporting appearances of Leo and Adams but most importantly the dynamite dominating portrayal of his hero/waster/catalyst brother make this a powerful of a film.
- DirectorAsif KapadiaStarsAyrton SennaReginaldo LemeJohn BisignanoA documentary on Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, who won the F1 world championship three times before his death at age 34.Although it largely centers around Senna's conflict with Alain Prost and the controversies surrounding their duels, it still leaves you with the feeling that you have just witnessed some moments of a true genius. I wish he was still around...
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsAaron Taylor-JohnsonNicolas CageChloë Grace MoretzDave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a superhero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.The title is truly fitting. A thoroughly entertaining ultra-violent, fast paced, dark comedy/adventure, directed with a lot of imagination, humour, and at points amazing scenes out of a comic book. Fun to watch, and would gladly watch it again.
- DirectorNathan GrenoByron HowardStarsMandy MooreZachary LeviDonna MurphyThe magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.A truly entertaining feature which made me and the kids laugh a lot and leave the movie theater truly excited.
- DirectorHiromasa YonebayashiStarsBridgit MendlerAmy PoehlerWill ArnettThe Clock family are four-inch-tall people who live anonymously in another family's residence, borrowing simple items to make their home. Life changes for the Clocks when their teenage daughter Arrietty is discovered. There is something magical about the wonderful creations of Japan's Studio Ghibli, and animator Hayao Miyazaki. And although this is not their strongest suit, it is still spellboundingly beautiful.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsJesse EisenbergAndrew GarfieldJustin TimberlakeAs Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business.Click to connect! With assured performances by the the whole cast ensemble but particularly those of Eisenberg (playing the socially immature geek that reinvented the way people connect socially over the web) and Garfield, mature directing from Fincher one of the most gifted directors of our time and a razor sharp script by Sorkin, it is a film that will stand out in the upcoming awards race. Everything clicked into place and I surely connected.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsJames FrancoAmber TamblynKate MaraA mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.Danny Boyle describes through an incredible Franco, the ordeal with vivid, intimate details. You feel everything from the visceral agony to the utter triumph. He once again proves how versatile of a director he can be and why he is considered one of the best of his generation.
- DirectorDean DeBloisChris SandersStarsJay BaruchelGerard ButlerChristopher Mintz-PlasseA hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed.Thrilling, funny, exciting, engaging, but most of all great fun to watch for all age groups! Animation is beautiful however I was not convinced with the 3D. However it is clear that Dreamworks gap with Pixar is closing up and this can only be good for us the viewers!
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsMichael CeraMary Elizabeth WinsteadKieran CulkinIn a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart.Truly imaginative direction, funny and quirky dialogues and if it was not for the over the top ending it would be a brilliant film indeed. Great casting and music add to the attraction of the final product.
- DirectorLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackThe toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.I want to go back and watch it again! Especially the part where Buzz thinks he is Spanish and cannot control himself
- DirectorDebra GranikStarsJennifer LawrenceJohn HawkesGarret DillahuntAn unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact.Jennifer Lawrence is a remarkably talented young actress who carries most of the film on her shoulders which coupled with the inspired direction of Debra Granik, bring us one of the most significant films of the year.
