Very good movie about the harsh and unfair way some generals in WW I treated their men, not knowing anything about what is going on since they never go to the battlefield when they actually fight. Having parties in a castle far away from the front is more their core business.
Three soldiers get picked quit "random" from the ranks, to be set an example for the regiment. This is, because the regiment didn't manage to capture a strongpoint although serious efforts were made. Colonel Dax (Douglas), being a former lawyer, defends the three. But the court martial is not following the basic rules ofjustice and the three don't stand a chance.
The movie ends with the knowledge the general also has a problem, since he ordered shelling his own trenches. But the artillery commander had refused it and there the movie ends, the trial of the general is not in it.
No happy ending, unforunately this was common military practice those days. Many, many soldiers were shot for being a deserter or a coward but most of them weren't.
