1. Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

PG-13 | 111 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

70 Metascore

The Borg travel back in time intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight reaching warp speed.

Director: Jonathan Frakes | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton

Votes: 132,111 | Gross: $92.00M

The best Star Trek film in my view because it combines good production values with a great story. It combines the two story elements of dealing with borg as the ultimate villains with the time travel story about Zephram Cochrane, the first warp flight and first contact with an alien race. Johnathan Frakes is a great director in combining all these elements well and Jerry Goldsmith produced an awesome score that added to it's atmosphere very well.

2. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

PG | 113 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

With the assistance of the Enterprise crew, Admiral Kirk must stop an old nemesis, Khan Noonien Singh, from using the life-generating Genesis Device as the ultimate weapon.

Director: Nicholas Meyer | Stars: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan

Votes: 129,269 | Gross: $78.91M

A true classic among the Star Trek films and for a relatively low budget film that is a continuation of an original series episode (Space Seed) you get a lot. The themes of loyalty, loss and gain that start here continue in Star Trek 3 and 4 and makes for a very good story arc. Khan is an excellent villain and the end makes for an emotional climax.

3. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

PG | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

On the eve of retirement, Kirk and McCoy are charged with assassinating the Klingon High Chancellor and imprisoned. The Enterprise crew must help them escape to thwart a conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the last best hope for peace.

Director: Nicholas Meyer | Stars: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan

Votes: 80,917 | Gross: $74.89M

A great final film for the original series cast. It combines action, political intrigue, the theme of peace and the fears that go along with such change as well as a murder mystery that ties all of this together.

4. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

PG | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

71 Metascore

To save Earth from an alien probe, Admiral James T. Kirk and his fugitive crew go back in time to San Francisco in 1986 to retrieve the only beings who can communicate with it: humpback whales.

Director: Leonard Nimoy | Stars: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan

Votes: 91,518 | Gross: $109.71M

The most accessible Star Trek film for a casual audience. It is a continuation of the story ark in Star Trek 2 and 3 and has the same themes of loyalty and bonding of the crew. It also has comic relief in seeing the crew deal with the strange (to them) aspects of 1986 San Francisco.

5. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

PG | 105 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

56 Metascore

Admiral Kirk and his bridge crew risk their careers stealing the decommissioned U.S.S. Enterprise to return to the restricted Genesis Planet to recover Spock's body.

Director: Leonard Nimoy | Stars: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan

Votes: 86,195 | Gross: $76.47M

A good movie that exemplifies the loyalty the crew has for each other more than any other film. The plot is mostly an elaborate way to as the title says to find Spock but it works and is an exciting continuation of the story arc from Wrath of Khan. Also like Wrath of Khan there is an emotional impact. The theme of loss and gain is common throughout the film.

6. Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

PG | 103 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

When the crew of the Enterprise learn of a Federation conspiracy against the inhabitants of a unique planet, Captain Picard begins an open rebellion.

Director: Jonathan Frakes | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton

Votes: 79,490 | Gross: $70.12M

The most underrated Star Trek film. This film explores the moral dilemma element (prime directive) that is common in Star Trek: The Next Generation's best episodes. It's story is more low key than most of the movies but that is part of it's unique charm. It also has plenty of action to balance things out. Johnathan Frakes duplicates the elements that also made First Contact work. The score by Jerry Goldsmith is also excellent.

7. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

G | 143 min | Adventure, Mystery, Sci-Fi

50 Metascore

When an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth, Admiral James T. Kirk resumes command of the overhauled USS Enterprise in order to intercept it.

Director: Robert Wise | Stars: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan

Votes: 96,653 | Gross: $82.26M

The film that exemplifies Gene Roddenberry's vision for Star Trek more than any other film. Many may find the movie slow in parts but if you are looking for good higher concept science fiction the payoff is very good. It also has one of the best soundtracks of all time by Jerry Goldsmith.

8. Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

The Enterprise is diverted to the Romulan homeworld Romulus, supposedly because they want to negotiate a peace treaty. Captain Picard and his crew discover a serious threat to the Federation once Praetor Shinzon plans to attack Earth.

Director: Stuart Baird | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton

Votes: 83,951 | Gross: $43.25M

This is an underrated Star Trek films that gets way too much unfair criticism. It explores the nature vs. nurture argument with the relationship between Picard and his clone Shinzon. A decent finish for the crew of The Next Generation. Stuart Baird is a good action director and the Jerry Goldsmith score is excellent as always, this was his last Star Trek score.

9. Star Trek: Generations (1994)

PG | 118 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery

55 Metascore

With the help of long presumed dead Captain Kirk, Captain Picard must stop a deranged scientist willing to murder on a planetary scale in order to enter a space matrix.

Director: David Carson | Stars: Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, Malcolm McDowell, Jonathan Frakes

Votes: 87,072 | Gross: $75.67M

A well made movie with good production values and a good score but the plot, particularly the Nexus, seems to be there only for the sake of getting Picard and Kirk together. Malcolm McDowell's Soran is a redeeming factor.

10. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

PG | 107 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

43 Metascore

Captain Kirk and his crew must deal with Mr. Spock's long-lost half-brother who hijacks the Enterprise for an obsessive search for God at the center of the galaxy.

Director: William Shatner | Stars: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan

Votes: 64,226 | Gross: $52.21M

Poor plot and direction by William Shatner. Ambitious premise that falls flat with plot holes and poor production values. Jerry Goldsmith's score is a redeeming factor. The movie does have a "so bad it is good" attraction to it, I would say I have a love-hate relationship with it, enough so that I recently bought the Special Collector's Edition DVD. The "camping scene" at the begining makes it worth a watch if nothing else. This movie is almost the textbook definition of a guilty pleasure.

11. Star Trek Beyond (2016)

PG-13 | 122 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

The crew of the USS Enterprise explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a new ruthless enemy, who puts them, and everything the Federation stands for, to the test.

Director: Justin Lin | Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana

Votes: 258,599 | Gross: $158.85M

This movie was honestly a pleasant surprise to me. Yes it still has a few issues inherent to the reboot universe but for once this film felt a bit more like classic Star Trek to me, in some ways it kind of redeems the reboot films to the point that I can now accept it and enjoy them for what they are, now I can go back to Star Trek 2009 and even Into Darkness and be happy the characters reached the point they do in Beyond. In some ways I could nickname this film Star Trek Beyond Expectations or Star Trek Beyond J.J. Abrams. That being said it is still not one of my favorite Star Trek films but it is a decent adventure, hands down the best of the reboot era.

12. Star Trek (2009)

PG-13 | 127 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

82 Metascore

The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Leonard Nimoy

Votes: 620,415 | Gross: $257.73M

A mediocre venture by J.J. Abrams. It has it moments, the movie was well cast as far as playing their original series counterparts and Leonard Nimoy being in the film also helps and is a nice touch. On the other hand Nero is a weak villain and the plot with the whole supernova/red matter makes no sense when I actually think about it. Then there are a whole host of minor issues where it diverges with established Trek lore, so it is a well made film for general audiences but many hardcore Trekkers can and do find it a bit jarring at times.

13. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch

Votes: 497,176 | Gross: $228.78M

This movie is last place mostly for it's lack of originality. The action scenes are on par or even better than Star Trek (2009) and the first half of the film is kind of an interesting journey of figuring out this mystery involving terrorism against the Federation BUT when the payoff happens *spolier alert* it is just a blatant rip off of the Wrath of Khan, Cumberbatch does a good job as a villain but when he was revealed as Khan it was very anticlimactic, and the end where they redo the famous death scene except with the roles of Kirk and Spock reversed it is just cringy. Disappointing that it took J.J. Abrams four years to come up with this rehashed plot.
