Underrated or Cheated Actors

by FMJBoyGenius | created - 23 Aug 2011 | updated - 05 Mar 2016 | Public

Actors who should be a lot more popular than they are, or they should have been given a lot more acknowledgement for the talent they displayed in their roles. This also includes Oscar snubs.

1. Jim Carrey

Actor | Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Jim Carrey, Canadian-born and a U.S. citizen since 2004, is an actor and producer famous for his rubbery body movements and flexible facial expressions. The two-time Golden Globe-winner rose to fame as a cast member of the Fox sketch comedy In Living Color (1990) but leading roles in Ace Ventura: ...

He is not recognized as much as he should be for the brilliant actor he is. He should have been given an Oscar nomination for The Mask, but he got a razzie nomination instead. His performances in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Man on the Moon were also Oscar worthy, but they were also overlooked. However, in my opinion, the worst injustice was when he was shunned by the Academy and the Golden Globes for his wonderful performance in I Love You Philip Morris. I think he is in the top 5 most underrated actor of all time.

2. Demi Moore

Actress | G.I. Jane

Demi Moore was born 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Her father Charles Harmon left her mother Virginia Guynes (née King) before Demi was born. Her stepfather Danny Guynes didn't add much stability to her life either. He frequently changed jobs and made the family move a total of 40 times. The parents ...

She was sensational in Ghost and should have received an Oscar nomination. She gave great performances in A Few Good Men and G.I. Jane, yet she has not been given the recognition she deserves. She was even given a Razzie for G.I. Jane.

3. Gabriel Byrne

Actor | The Usual Suspects

Byrne was the eldest of six children born to a family in Dublin, Ireland. His father was a cooper and his mother a hospital worker. He was raised Catholic and educated by the Irish Christian Brothers. He spent five years of his childhood in a seminary training to be a Catholic priest. He later said...

Loved him in Man in the Iron Mask. He was perfect as D'Artagnan. I could see him getting an Oscar nomination for that film. He's also wonderful in the HBO series In Treatment which should be a lot more popular than it is.

4. Gary Oldman

Actor | The Dark Knight

Gary Oldman is a talented English movie star and character actor, renowned for his expressive acting style. One of the most celebrated thespians of his generation, with a diverse career encompassing theatre, film and television, he is known for his roles as Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy (1986), ...

Few actors can disappear into their roles like he can and he's only gotten one Oscar nomination. He is a screen chameleon! One of the best actors ever! Hope he gets an Oscar soon!

5. Jeremy Irons

Actor | Dead Ringers

British actor Jeremy Irons was born in Cowes, Isle of Wight, a small island off the south coast of England. He is the son of Barbara Anne Brereton (Sharpe) and Paul Dugan Irons, an accountant. Young Jeremy didn't prove very fond of figures. He visited mainland England only once a year. He wound up ...

Should have been nominated for more films than Reversal of Fortune. Dead Ringers was definitely worthy of an Oscar nomination. M. Butterfly was also a great performance. Also, he's been in films that should be more popular than they are. The Mission, Reversal of Fortune, The Man in the Iron Mask, Kingdom of Heaven, and Casanova. Despite these great films, not to mention Lion King, too many people do not know who he is. He should be a lot more famous than he currently is.

6. Embeth Davidtz

Actress | Bicentennial Man

Embeth Davidtz was born on August 11, 1965 in Lafayette, Indiana. She is known for her role as Miss Honey in the film Matilda (1996).

Her parents, Jean and John Davidtz, were South Africans, with Dutch, English, and French ancestry. The family moved to Trenton, New Jersey, before returning to her ...

One day I realized that Helen Hirsch from Schindler's List, Amanda and Portia from Bicentennial Man, and Mary Parker from the latest Spider-Man films were all the same actress. She is amazing! I could not believe that they were all the same person. She is so underrated! She should be really famous and have at least 1 or 2 Oscar nods.

7. Liam Neeson

Actor | Kinsey

Liam Neeson was born on June 7, 1952 in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, to Katherine (Brown), a cook, and Bernard Neeson, a school caretaker. He was raised in a Catholic household. During his early years, Liam worked as a forklift operator for Guinness, a truck driver, an assistant architect and an ...

He's pretty famous but he should be given a lot more credit for the great actor he is. Kinsey was worthy of an Oscar nomination. Lately, he's been given a lot of action parts. His acting is so wonderful that he should be given a lot more incredible parts.

8. James Woods

Actor | Vampires

James Howard Woods was born on April 18, 1947 in Vernal, Utah, the son of Martha A. (Smith) and Gail Peyton Woods, a U.S. Army intelligence officer who died during Woods' childhood. James is of Irish, English, and German descent. He grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island, with his mother and stepfather ...

He is such a great actor! He's been Oscar nominated twice and won two Emmys. I loved him in My Name is Bill W., in which he played one of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was also brilliant in Hercules, Promise, and Ghosts of Mississippi. Despite his acclaim, he's not as famous or as highly regarded as the great actor he is. He should be getting a lot more amazing and demanding roles.

9. Kevin Bacon

Actor | Footloose

Kevin Norwood Bacon was born on July 8, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Ruth Hilda (Holmes), an elementary school teacher, and Edmund Norwood Bacon, a prominent architect who was on the cover of Time Magazine in November 1964.

Kevin's early training as an actor came from The Manning Street. ...

He's a very talented actor and has not received enough acclaim for it. He was great in films like Footloose, Mystic River, Death Sentence, and Sleepers. He should have a couple of Oscar nominations by now.

10. Greg Kinnear

Actor | As Good as It Gets

Greg Kinnear was born on June 17, 1963, in Logansport, Indiana, USA to Edward Kinnear, a career diplomat with the US State Department, and Suzanne (nee Buck) Kinnear, a homemaker. He has two brothers -- James, vice president-investments at Wachovia Securities in Arizona who was born in 1957, and ...

Gave a wonderful performance in Flash of Genius, but he was not nominated for an Oscar. Also, he should have a lot more parts as leading men.

11. Harrison Ford

Actor | Raiders of the Lost Ark

Harrison Ford was born on July 13, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, to Dorothy (Nidelman), a radio actress, and Christopher Ford (born John William Ford), an actor turned advertising executive. His father was of Irish and German ancestry, while his maternal grandparents were Jewish emigrants from Minsk, ...

Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Dr. Richard Kimble, Branch Rickey, and many more. The man is a legend, and he only has one Oscar nomination! He needs to win an Honorary Oscar for his amazing body of work!

12. Helen Hunt

Actress | As Good as It Gets

Helen Hunt began studying acting at the age of eight with her father, respected director and acting coach Gordon Hunt. A year later she made her professional debut and afterwards worked steadily in films, theatre and television.

Should be a lot more popular as a leading lady than she is. She was wonderful in Pay It Forward, What Women Want, and Cast Away. She was given an Oscar for her performance in As Good As It Gets, and that is where her critical acclaim seems to have stopped, at least until the Sessions.

13. Bruce Willis

Actor | Die Hard

Actor and musician Bruce Willis is well known for playing wisecracking or hard-edged characters, often in spectacular action films. Collectively, he has appeared in films that have grossed in excess of $2.5 billion USD.

Walter Bruce Willis was born on March 19, 1955, in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany,...

He is a great actor, yet he is always put in action flicks. He was wonderful in The Sixth Sense and was not nominated for an Oscar. In that role, he proved that he could do a lot more than play tough cops and gangsters. He should have a lot more demanding roles.

14. Jeff Daniels

Actor | The Squid and the Whale

Actor Jeff Daniels was born in Athens, Georgia, but was raised in Chelsea, Michigan. He is the son of Marjorie J. (Ferguson) and Robert Lee Daniels, who owned The Chelsea Lumber Company and was also mayor of Chelsea. Jeff attended Central Michigan University, but became involved in acting and ...

Showing great range from Dumb and Dumber to Gettysburg, he is not recognized as the very talented actor he is. His performance in Gettysburg should have been Oscar nominated.

15. Danny Glover

Actor | Lethal Weapon

Actor, producer and humanitarian Danny Glover has been a commanding presence on screen, stage and television for more than 35 years.

Glover was born in San Francisco, California, to Carrie (Hunley) and James Glover, postal workers who were also active in civil rights. Glover trained at the Black ...

His performance in the Color Purple was amazing! He should have been nominated for an Oscar. Amazingly, despite being famous for Color Purple, Lethal Weapon, and many others, he has never received a well deserved Oscar nomination.

16. Connie Nielsen

Actress | Gladiator

Connie Nielsen is set to begin production on Ridley Scott's "Gladiator 2," where she will star alongside Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington, reprising her iconic role of 'Lucilla' from the Academy Award-winning film "Gladiator." She appears in Ava Duvernay's feature, "Origin," based on the book by ...

I thought she was awesome in Gladiator! I thought she should have been Oscar nominated for it. I hope being cast as Queen Hippolyta will really further her career because she is quite talented.

17. James Caan

Actor | Thief

A masculine and enigmatic actor whose life and movie career have had more ups and downs than the average rollercoaster and whose selection of roles has arguably derailed him from achieving true superstar status, James Caan is New York-born and bred.

He was born in the Bronx, to Sophie (Falkenstein) ...

Gave wonderful performances in The Godfather and Misery, but he has not become as famous as other people in The Godfather trilogy. Diane Keaton, Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro have all gone on to become superstars, but James is overlooked a lot more than them. He should be much more of a leading man than he is.

18. James Garner

Actor | The Notebook

Amiable and handsome James Garner had obtained success in both films and television, often playing variations of the charming anti-hero/con-man persona he first developed in Maverick, the offbeat western TV series that shot him to stardom in the late 1950s.

James Garner was born James Scott ...

He was phenomenal in the Notebook, but he was not nominated for an Oscar. In addition to that, his name does not come up as often as it should in the list of the greatest actors of all time. He has been in several successful things, but he is not the leading man that De Niro, Gere, Nicholson, and many others are.

19. Matthew Broderick

Actor | The Producers

A slight comic actor chiefly known for his boyish charm, Matthew Broderick was born on March 21, 1962 in New York City, to Patricia Broderick (née Biow), a playwright and painter, and James Broderick, an actor. His father had Irish and English ancestry, and his mother was from a Jewish family (from...

Has shown himself to be immensely talented with roles like Ferris Bueller, Glory, and The Lion King. Yet, he is not considered to be in the same category with many great actors like Leonardo Dicaprio and Kevin Spacey. He was shunned by the Academy when he was not nominated for Glory and deserves to be much more popular and highly regarded.

20. Aaron Eckhart

Actor | The Dark Knight

Aaron Edward Eckhart is an American actor. Born in Cupertino, California, Eckhart moved to the United Kingdom at an early age, when his father relocated the family. Several years later, he began his acting career by performing in school plays, before moving to Australia for his high school senior ...

He was spectacular in the Dark Knight, but all of the praise went to Heath Ledger, which he greatly deserved. He was wonderful in Rabbit Hole, but all of the praise went to Nicole Kidman, which she deserved. Even though the actors in these two films who got most of the credit deserved it, Aaron was also spectacular in both of them. I think he should have also gotten an Oscar nomination for Rabbit Hole and a little more credit for his wonderful job in the Dark Knight.

21. Edward Norton

Actor | Fight Club

American actor, filmmaker and activist Edward Harrison Norton was born on August 18, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was raised in Columbia, Maryland.

His mother, Lydia Robinson "Robin" (Rouse), was a foundation executive and teacher of English, and a daughter of famed real estate developer ...

Great actor! Should have more nominations than just 2! I can think of at least two or three more that are awesome! Namely, Fight Club, Kingdom of Heaven, and Red Dragon. Also, he should have won for Primal Fear. I loved Cuba Gooding Jr. in Jerry Maguire, but he should not have beaten Norton.

22. Tom Cruise

Actor | Top Gun

In 1976, if you had told fourteen-year-old Franciscan seminary student Thomas Cruise Mapother IV that one day in the not too distant future he would be Tom Cruise, one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, he would have probably grinned and told you that his ambition was to join the priesthood. ...

He is one of the top 30 actors of all time, but he can't seem to get recognition for it. He should have won the Oscar for Magnolia but lost to Michael Caine for The Cider House Rules. Caine was great, Cruise was even greater! In addition to this, people say too often that he always plays the same character. While he does play an immature guy who changes a lot, this statement is not true. Just watch Born on the Fourth of July, Magnolia, Tropic Thunder, Collateral, Interview with the Vampire, Rock of Ages, and Minority Report. And, finally, he should have a lot more nominations than 3. Collateral, Rain Man, The Last Samurai, and Interview with the Vampire were all worthy of nominations. Possibly, A Few Good Men and Vanilla Sky as well.

23. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Actor | Inception

Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt was born February 17, 1981 in Los Angeles, California, to Jane Gordon and Dennis Levitt. Joseph was raised in a Jewish family with his late older brother, Dan Gordon-Levitt, who passed away in October 2010. His parents worked for the Pacifica Radio station KPFK-FM and ...

He gave great performances in The Dark Knight Rises and Lincoln. I think he's worthy of being Oscar nominated. I hope he gets that recognition soon.

24. Chris O'Donnell

Actor | Batman & Robin

Christopher Eugene O'Donnell was born on June 26th, 1970 in Winnetka, Illinois, to Julie Ann (Rohs) and William Charles O'Donnell, Sr., who managed a CBS radio station, WBBM-AM. He is the youngest child in his family, with four sisters and two brothers. His father had Irish ancestry and his ...

He has been in very popular films, but he has not been given the recognition that he should have been for his acting ability. He should have been honored with an Academy Award nomination for his work in Scent of a Woman, but he wasn't. I also do not see why his performance in Batman & Robin was considered to be bad. The only thing that made his performance look bad was the script. The Razzie nomination he received should be wiped off of his record, and he should be seen as the good actor he is.

25. Glenn Close

Actress | Fatal Attraction

Eight time Academy Award-nominated actress Glenn Close was born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. She is the daughter of Elizabeth Mary H. "Bettine" (Moore) and William Taliaferro Close (William Close), a prominent doctor. Both of her parents were from upper-class families.

Glenn was a noted ...

GIVE THE LADY AN OSCAR!!! She was flawless in Fatal Attraction, but she did not receive an Oscar for that or any other of her films. She's been nominated 6 times, but she has never won.

26. Sean Penn

Actor | Mystic River

Sean Penn is a powerhouse film performer capable of intensely moving work, who has gone from strength to strength during a colourful film career, and who has drawn much media attention for his stormy private life and political viewpoints.

Sean Justin Penn was born in Los Angeles, California, the ...

Although he is highly recognized as an incredible actor, he lost the Oscar for his wonderful performance in I Am Sam. What makes him cheated is the fact that he lost it to Denzel Washington for portraying a bad guy in Training Day. While Denzel's performance was great, Sean was playing someone mentally challenged, which was much more impressive to me than Washington's performance.

27. Johnny Depp

Actor | Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

John Christopher "Johnny" Depp II was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Betty Sue Palmer (née Wells), a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer. He was raised in Florida. He dropped out of school when he was 15, and fronted a series of music-garage bands, including one ...

So versatile, so talented, should have an Oscar by now! Should have been nominated for Edward Scissorhands and Donnie Brasco!

28. Ralph Fiennes

Actor | The Constant Gardener

Actor Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes was born on December 22, 1962 in Suffolk, England, to Jennifer Anne Mary Alleyne (Lash), a novelist, and Mark Fiennes, a photographer. He is the eldest of six children. Four of his siblings are also in the arts: Martha Fiennes, a director; Magnus ...

He should have won the Oscar for his amazing performance in Schindler's List. As good as Tommy Lee Jones was in the Fugitive, Fiennes was better. His performance in Red Dragon was also Oscar worthy.

29. Jennifer Lopez

Producer | Hustlers

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on July 24, 1969 in The Bronx, New York City, New York to teacher Lupe López and computer specialist David López. The two Puerto Ricans were brought to the continental United States during their childhoods and eventually met while living in New York City. Their ...

I don't understand why everyone hates her as an actress. I think she's a good actress. She's not Meryl Streep by any means, but I do think she's good. I enjoyed Maid in Manhattan and Monster-in-Law, which critics ripped her apart for. I don't even think Gigli was as bad as everyone says. It did have a really bad script though.

30. Ewan McGregor

Actor | Moulin Rouge!

Ewan Gordon McGregor was born on March 31, 1971 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, to Carol Diane (Lawson) and James Charles McGregor, both teachers. His uncle is actor Denis Lawson. He was raised in Crieff. At age 16, he left Morrison Academy to join the Perth Repertory Theatre. His parents ...

He was cheated by the Academy and the Golden Globes for not being nominated for his wonderful performance in I Love You Philip Morris. Also, he deserves to have more star power because he is such an incredible actor.

31. Cuba Gooding Jr.

Actor | Jerry Maguire

Cuba Gooding Jr. was born on January 2, 1968, in The Bronx, New York. His mother, Shirley (Sullivan), was a backup singer for The Sweethearts. His father, Cuba Gooding, was the lead vocalist for the R&B group The Main Ingredient, which had a hit with the song "Everybody Plays The Fool". His ...

Although he's pretty famous, his performance in Men of Honor was way too overlooked.

32. Faye Dunaway

Actress | Bonnie and Clyde

An icy, elegant blonde with a knack for playing complex and strong-willed female leads, enormously popular actress Faye Dunaway starred in several films which defined what many would come to call Hollywood's "second Golden Age." During her tenure at the top of the box office, she was a more than ...

She was huge in the 60s and 70s for Bonnie and Clyde, Chinatown, and Network, but she should have stayed huge. Many people think it was her performance in Mommie Dearest that hurt her career, but I think it was one of the most bone chilling performances I've ever seen! I think it's a crime that she wasn't Oscar nominated for that film! She was PERFECT!!!

33. Mel Gibson

Actor | Braveheart

Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born January 3, 1956 in Peekskill, New York, USA, as the sixth of eleven children of Hutton Gibson, a railroad brakeman, and Anne Patricia (Reilly) Gibson (who died in December of 1990). His mother was Irish, from County Longford, while his American-born father is ...

He is extremely popular, but he is not given as much credit for his acting ability as he should be. Although he won two Oscars for it, his great performance in Braveheart was not nominated, and he was shunned again for his wonderful performance in the Beaver, which may be his greatest performance ever.
