Great actors who've yet to (or never will) win an Oscar for Acting.

by DaveMuto | created - 15 Apr 2012 | updated - 16 Apr 2012 | Public

A short list, for now, of actors who I feel have yet to, deserve(d) to, or could've but won't, win an Oscar for acting in a movie. Feel free to critique and make as many suggestions as you like, I know I left out many good candidates for this list. Also, they're in no particular order. And I'm not counting honorary Oscars.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

Actor | Inception

Few actors in the world have had a career quite as diverse as Leonardo DiCaprio's. DiCaprio has gone from relatively humble beginnings, as a supporting cast member of the sitcom Growing Pains (1985) and low budget horror movies, such as Critters 3 (1991), to a major teenage heartthrob in the 1990s,...

Many of his great performances haven't even been nominated, but the two that have been as an adult couldn't compete with those year's winners. (Jaime Foxx in Ray, Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland)

2. Clint Eastwood

Actor | Million Dollar Baby

Clint Eastwood was born May 31, 1930 in San Francisco, to Clinton Eastwood Sr., a bond salesman and later manufacturing executive for Georgia-Pacific Corporation, and Ruth Wood (née Margret Ruth Runner), a housewife turned IBM clerk. He grew up in nearby Piedmont. At school Clint took interest in ...

He's been nominated for acting, but all four of his oscars were for directing and best picture. I'm pretty sure he didn't campaign for a nomination for Gran Torino but, come on...the man should've gotten something.

3. James Woods

Actor | Vampires

James Howard Woods was born on April 18, 1947 in Vernal, Utah, the son of Martha A. (Smith) and Gail Peyton Woods, a U.S. Army intelligence officer who died during Woods' childhood. James is of Irish, English, and German descent. He grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island, with his mother and stepfather ...

His career's been a little stale lately, but the man's got an impressive resume that should've given him more then the two nominations he's gotten.

4. Michael Clarke Duncan

Actor | The Green Mile

Michael Clarke Duncan was born on December 10, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. Raised on Chicago's South Side by his single mother, Jean, a house cleaner, Duncan grew up resisting drugs and alcohol, instead concentrating on school. He wanted to play football in high school, but his mother wouldn't let ...

I doubt we'll see him get nominated again after The Green Mile, but I personally felt he should've won that year. You'd think after that role, casting agents would consider him more often.

5. Peter O'Toole

Actor | Lawrence of Arabia

A leading man of prodigious talents, Peter O'Toole was born and raised in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, the son of Constance Jane Eliot (Ferguson), a Scottish nurse, and Patrick Joseph O'Toole, an Irish metal plater, football player and racecourse bookmaker. Upon leaving school, he decided to become a...

His legend of 'most nominations without a win' speaks for itself.

6. Richard Burton

Actor | Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Probably best-remembered for his turbulent personal life with Elizabeth Taylor (whom he married twice), Richard Burton was nonetheless also regarded as an often brilliant British actor of the post-WWII period.

Burton was born Richard Walter Jenkins in 1925 into a Welsh (Cymraeg)-speaking family in ...

Same legend as O'Toole, except Burton's dead. Fun fact, they were BOTH nominated for best actor in a leading role in 1970, but lost to John Wayne for True Grit

7. Will Smith

Producer | The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Willard Carroll "Will" Smith II (born September 25, 1968) is an American actor, comedian, producer, rapper, and songwriter. He has enjoyed success in television, film, and music. In April 2007, Newsweek called him "the most powerful actor in Hollywood". Smith has been nominated for five Golden ...

If he stopped throwing so many of the cliche's (which ironically made him famous) into so many of his roles, we could probably see him ACT, and he'd have more then two nominations, both of which were roles that had Oscar bait on the characters, not so much the actor who played them.

8. Warren Beatty

Actor | Heaven Can Wait

Since starring in his first film, Splendor in the Grass (1961), Warren Beatty has been said to have demonstrated a greater longevity in movies than any actor of his generation. Few people have taken so many responsibilities for all phases of the production of films as producer, director, writer, ...

Like Eastwood, he got an Oscar for directing, not acting, but had tons of nominations for best leading man. And, remember, I'm not counting those "honorary" awards either.

9. Edward Norton

Actor | Fight Club

American actor, filmmaker and activist Edward Harrison Norton was born on August 18, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was raised in Columbia, Maryland.

His mother, Lydia Robinson "Robin" (Rouse), was a foundation executive and teacher of English, and a daughter of famed real estate developer ...

I still can't believe he didn't get attention for "The Illusionist." I thought he was brilliant.

10. Bob Hoskins

Actor | The Long Good Friday

Bob Hoskins was described by the director John Mackenzie as "an actor from the British tradition but with an almost American approach, an instinctive approach to acting and knowing how to work with the camera". He was born on October 26, 1942, in Bury St. Edmund's, Suffolk, where his mother was ...

Won every award possible (seriously) for his role in "Mona Lisa" except the Oscar. Paul Newman had his glory days, 1987 was Hoskins's year.

11. Tom Cruise

Actor | Top Gun

In 1976, if you had told fourteen-year-old Franciscan seminary student Thomas Cruise Mapother IV that one day in the not too distant future he would be Tom Cruise, one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, he would have probably grinned and told you that his ambition was to join the priesthood. ...

Say what you will about him, he's won a Golden Globe for every Oscar nominated performance he's had.

12. Viggo Mortensen

Actor | The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Since his screen debut as a young Amish farmer in Peter Weir's Witness (1985), Viggo Mortensen's career has been marked by a steady string of well-rounded performances.

Mortensen was born in New York City, to Grace Gamble (Atkinson) and Viggo Peter Mortensen, Sr. His father was Danish, his mother ...

Had a 5-6 year span of great roles after LOTR...got recognized for one. Tis a shame.

13. Jim Carrey

Actor | Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Jim Carrey, Canadian-born and a U.S. citizen since 2004, is an actor and producer famous for his rubbery body movements and flexible facial expressions. The two-time Golden Globe-winner rose to fame as a cast member of the Fox sketch comedy In Living Color (1990) but leading roles in Ace Ventura: ...

The Truman Show, Man on The Moon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Not even a nomination. We wouldn't be seeing him in penguin movies had his dramatic performances not been literally ignored by the academy.

14. Samuel L. Jackson

Actor | Pulp Fiction

Samuel L. Jackson is an American producer and highly prolific actor, having appeared in over 100 films, including Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), Unbreakable (2000), Shaft (2000), Formula 51 (2001), Black Snake Moan (2006), Snakes on a Plane (2006), and the Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999-2005), ...

I know, I know...and the year he got nominated for Pulp Fiction, it really was a toss up between him and Landau in Ed Wood. Pulp Fiction made his career, but, can you do more with your roles, Mr. Jackson?

15. Winona Ryder

Actress | Little Women

Winona Ryder was born Winona Laura Horowitz in Olmsted County, Minnesota, and was named after a nearby town, Winona, Minnesota. She is the daughter of Cynthia (Istas), an author and video producer, and Michael Horowitz, a publisher and bookseller. Her father's family is Ukrainian Jewish and ...

I don't see her getting anymore nominations in the near future. She was great in Black Swan, and only a few minutes of screen time can get you attention (Viola Davis did it in Doubt,) but Winona Ryder is not Viola Davis.

16. Amy Adams

Actress | Arrival

Amy Lou Adams was born in Vicenza, Veneto, Italy, to American parents, Kathryn (Hicken) and Richard Kent Adams, a U.S. serviceman who was stationed at Caserma Ederle in Italy at the time. She was raised in a Mormon family of seven children in Castle Rock, Colorado, and has English, as well as ...

She's got three supporting actress nominations on her resume, all for roles that are relatively forgettable. Think what you will of "Enchanted," singing and dancing on screen used to get noticed a lot more.

17. Scarlett Johansson

Actress | Lost in Translation

Scarlett Ingrid Johansson was born on November 22, 1984 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. Her mother, Melanie Sloan is from a Jewish family from the Bronx and her father, Karsten Johansson is a Danish-born architect from Copenhagen. She has a sister, Vanessa Johansson, who is also an actress, ...

Four Golden Globe nominations, hailed as a generation defining actress...not a single nomination from the academy yet.

18. Elliot Page

Actor | Juno

Elliot Page was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Martha Philpotts, a teacher, and Dennis Page, a graphic designer. Page wanted to start acting at an early age and attended the Neptune Theater School. They began their career at the age of 10 on the award-winning television series Pit Pony (1999), for...

She didn't even think she should've been nominated for Juno. She doesn't act for the accolades, but hopefully she'll acquire more, her work up until now is way to promising.

19. Anne Hathaway

Actress | Les Misérables

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Kate McCauley Hathaway, an actress, and Gerald T. Hathaway, a lawyer, both originally from Philadelphia. She is of mostly Irish descent, along with English, German, and French. Her first major role came in the short-lived television series ...

Sorta hit or miss with some of her roles, and the year she lost for Rachel Getting Married was foreseeable, I just hope, like Ellen Page, she's got more to offer. That nomination, also like Ellen Page, put her on the A-list.

20. John C. Reilly

Actor | Chicago

Character actor, dramatic leading man, or hilarious comic foil? With an astonishing range of roles already under his belt, John C. Reilly has played an eclectic host of rich characters to great effect over the years, from seedy ne'er-do-wells, to lovable, good-natured schlepps.

The fifth of six ...

The guy was doing Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway after he finished Talladega nights. Oh, and I almost forgot, his movies without Will Ferrell are beloved by all.

21. Elizabeth Olsen

Actress | Martha Marcy May Marlene

Elizabeth Chase "Lizzie" Olsen (born February 16, 1989) is an American actress. She is known for her roles in the films Silent House (2011), Liberal Arts (2012), Godzilla (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and Captain America: Civil War (2016). For her role in the critically-acclaimed Martha ...

I know she's just getting started, but here's to hoping we get more Martha Marcy May Marlene roles out of her in the future.

22. Kirsten Dunst

Actress | Spider-Man

Kirsten Caroline Dunst is an American actress, who also holds German citizenship. She was born on April 30, 1982 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, to parents Inez (née Rupprecht), who owned an art gallery, and Klaus Dunst, a medical services executive. She has a younger brother named Christian Dunst, ...

Melancholia. I honestly think she didn't get nominated because of Von Trier's comments. But, she's got the talent, hopefully she'll do it again and political correctness and movie politics in general won't get in the way.

23. Judy Garland

Actress | The Wizard of Oz

One of the brightest, most tragic movie stars of Hollywood's Golden Era, Judy Garland was a much-loved character whose warmth and spirit, along with her rich and exuberant voice, kept theatre-goers entertained with an array of delightful musicals.

She was born Frances Ethel Gumm on 10 June 1922 in ...

Just tragic.

24. Peter Sellers

Actor | Being There

Often credited as the greatest comedian of all time, Peter Sellers was born Richard Henry Sellers to a well-off acting family in 1925 in Southsea, a suburb of Portsmouth. He was the son of Agnes Doreen "Peg" (Marks) and William "Bill" Sellers. His parents worked in an acting company run by his ...

Being There should've been his year. I know Dustin Hoffman was great in Kramer vs. Kramer, but Sellers's performance in Being There is not of this earth. For god's sake, Geoffrey Rush won the Emmy and the Golden Globe for portraying him in the TV movie, "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers."

25. Natalie Wood

Actress | Rebel Without a Cause

Natalie Wood was an American actress of Russian and Ukrainian descent. She started her career as a child actress and eventually transitioned into teenage roles, young adult roles, and middle-aged roles. She drowned off Catalina Island on November 29, 1981 at age 43.

Wood was born July 20, 1938 in ...

Again, Death steals another contender.

26. River Phoenix

Actor | My Own Private Idaho

River Phoenix was born River Jude Bottom in Madras, Oregon. His mother, Arlyn (Dunetz), a Bronx-born secretary, and his father, John Bottom, a carpenter, met in California in 1968. They worked as itinerant fruit pickers, and later joined the Children of God religious group (John was originally ...

Again, we'll never know...but now this list is just getting morbid.

27. Joaquin Phoenix

Actor | Walk the Line

Joaquin Phoenix was born Joaquin Rafael Bottom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Arlyn (Dunetz) and John Bottom, and is the middle child in a brood of five. His parents, from the continental United States, were then serving as Children of God missionaries. His mother is from a Jewish family from New ...

After the whole "I'm still here" stunt, or whatever that was, he'll probably fade out. But, before that, he had potential to keep doing great work. There was just no beating Philip Seymour Hoffman that year for Capote.

28. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Actor | Inception

Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt was born February 17, 1981 in Los Angeles, California, to Jane Gordon and Dennis Levitt. Joseph was raised in a Jewish family with his late older brother, Dan Gordon-Levitt, who passed away in October 2010. His parents worked for the Pacifica Radio station KPFK-FM and ...

He's been getting more and more attention. I'm sure he'll catch the eye of the academy very soon.

29. Viola Davis

Actress | Fences

Viola Davis is a critically revered actress of film, television, and theater and has won rave reviews for her multitude of substantial and intriguingly diverse roles. Audiences across the United States and internationally have admired her for her work- including her celebrated, Oscar-nominated ...

blutrain made a great point in mentioning her. Obviously an actress of great dramatic poise, The Help could've been her year if it wasn't for Streep, but Meryl Streep's performance in The Iron Lady holds a candle to any other performance she could've lost/won for, and everyone would say it was a nod for losing so many times in the past. Davis, for me, showed everything she needed to in her 10 minutes of screen time in Doubt, and with the even bigger splash she made with The Help, I wouldn't be surprised if by reputation only she makes the ticket more frequently.

30. Ryan Gosling

Actor | Blue Valentine

Born Ryan Thomas Gosling on November 12, 1980, in London, Ontario, Canada, he is the son of Donna (Wilson), a secretary, and Thomas Ray Gosling, a traveling salesman. Ryan was the second of their two children, with an older sister, Mandi. His ancestry is French-Canadian, as well as English, ...

Again, thanks to blutrain for bringing this up. Why was he not recognized for Drive? His role in The Ides of March was to embody the plot, whereas Clooney and Giamatti's roles were to have him move the plot. I don't think Gosling does it for the accolades, since his celebrity status is mostly akin to his looks and his roles, thus you see a pretty guy, but you watch a master of his craft, but, he should've been nominated for Drive. Speaking of The Ides of March though...

31. Paul Giamatti

Actor | Sideways

Paul Giamatti is an American actor who has worked steadily and prominently for over thirty years, and is best known for leading roles in the films American Splendor (2003), Sideways (2004), and Barney's Version (2010) (for which he won a Golden Globe), and supporting roles in the films Cinderella ...

Why was he only nominated for Cinderella Man? No one walked out of the theater going "man, did you see Giamatti on the side of the ring during the fight? What? You were watching Russell Crowe the whole time?" -_- Should've gotten nominated alongside Thomas Hayden Church for Sideways, and perhaps also The Illusionist.

32. Djimon Hounsou

Actor | Blood Diamond

Djimon Hounsou was born in Cotonou, Benin, in west Africa to Albertine and Pierre Hounsou, a cook. He moved to Lyon, France, when he was 13. Hounsou has graced the catwalks of Paris and London as a popular male model. He has since left his modeling career and has worked on Gladiator (2000) by ...

Unfortunately, both years he was nominated for best supporting actor he had extremely stiff competition. While I think he should've won for his performance in Blood Diamond, Alan Arkin's performance in Little Miss Sunshine was as subtle and hillarious as Hounsou's performance in Blood Diamond was gut wrenching and angry. I can only hope he continues delivering such stellar performances as his resume suggests so I can hear what I'm sure will be a very graceful acceptance speech.

33. Paul Dano

Actor | There Will Be Blood

An actor for all seasons and all kinds of roles (from dark, difficult characters to more loving ones) Paul Dano has an extensive body work that includes working with directors such as Paul Thomas Anderson, Steve McQueen, Dayton & Ferris, Ang Lee, Denis Villenueve and Paolo Sorrentino; acting with ...

Watch "There Will be Blood," and tell me how he didn't deserve a supporting actor nomination that year. Daniel Day Lewis of course conquers that movie, but Paul Dano's monologue in the church sent chills down my spine; the chemistry between the two was remarkable, and not just anyone can keep up with Daniel Day Lewis.

34. Johnny Depp

Actor | Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

John Christopher "Johnny" Depp II was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, to Betty Sue Palmer (née Wells), a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer. He was raised in Florida. He dropped out of school when he was 15, and fronted a series of music-garage bands, including one ...

His first nomination was for the first Pirates movie. Shows an open mindedness that the academy has been accredited to be lacking since...yeah. But, while the three nominations he had were for great roles, he lost to good contenders. My issue, is that he should have more than 3 nominations in the academy. Watch Ed Wood, Blow, Fear and Loathing; just pick a movie prior to Pirates when he was just considered a hottie and hadn't been noted as a very capable actor. Marlon-freaking-Brando didn't call him the best actor of his generation for no reason. Brando.

Brando.
