- DirectorJulien TempleStarsGeena DavisJeff GoldblumJim CarreyA Southern California girl befriends three furry aliens after their spaceship lands in her swimming pool. This is one of my all time favorite B-movie and the epitome of 80's camp. Three furry aliens from outer space land in the Valley not for science but to get lucky! Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum were so hot together in this movie and I loved the songs that were written and performed by the very funny Julie Brown. Awesome!
- DirectorSidney LumetStarsDiana RossMichael JacksonNipsey RussellAn adaptation of "The Wizard of Oz" that tries to capture the essence of the African-American experience.I know a lot of fans of the original "Wizard of Oz" think of this movie as pure sacrilege and that Diana Ross was too old to play Dorothy(FYI, she wasn't playing a child anyway, she was playing a young school teacher), but I beg to differ. The stage show was a classic on Broadway and I've always loved the energetic songs. :D
- DirectorSteve AntinStarsCherChristina AguileraAlan CummingA small-town girl ventures to Los Angeles and finds her place in a neo-burlesque club run by a former dancer.Christina Aguilera makes her theatrical film and musical debut as Ali Rose, a "small-town girl with a big voice," who finds work at a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, inspired by Bob Fosse's Cabaret and European Burlesque entertainment. Cher stars as Tess, a former dancer who struggles to keep the nightclub open and serves as a mentor to Ali. I know this overall movie is about as deep as a thimble full of water, the plot is thin enough to see through and Christina can't act her way out of a paper bag but I've seen worse musicals. I love the dance numbers, the music, the costumes and the atmosphere. Long story short, I was entertained, so no complaints from me. ;D
- DirectorSeth MacFarlaneStarsMark WahlbergMila KunisSeth MacFarlaneJohn Bennett, a man whose childhood wish of bringing his teddy bear to life came true, now must decide between keeping the relationship with the bear, Ted or his girlfriend, Lori.John Bennett is a lonely boy who can't make any friends. One Christmas, he receives a teddy bear from his parents and immediately grows attached to it. John names him Teddy, and wishes one night that Ted could be alive; inexplicably, a shooting star passing overhead causing his wish to come true and Ted is alive the next morning, much to the fear and eventual jubilation of his parents. Due to his sentience, Ted becomes a celebrity for a short period of time.
27 years later, Ted(voiced by Seth MacFarlane) and John(Mark Wahlberg) still have a very strong bond, which now includes mass consumption of alcohol and pot. John's live-in girlfriend, Lori(Mila Kunis), feels Ted is keeping John emotionally immature and wants Ted to move out in order for them to both finally grow up. This movie definitely falls into the gross out genre that I try to avoid, but I have to admit, it's too hilarious and it's like a live action "Family Guy" episode! XD - DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsNicole KidmanHugh JackmanShea AdamsIn 1939, an Englishwoman inherits a sprawling ranch in northern Australia and reluctantly makes a pact with a stockman to drive 2000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape. This movie wasn't very well received by critics because of the rather rushed plot and too tightly wrapped up ending, but who cares? Hugh Jackman has never looked more delicious than in this movie! :D In 1939, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) travels from England to northern Australia to force her philandering husband to sell his faltering cattle station, Faraway Downs.
Her husband(just before he gets murdered) sends an independent cattle drover (Hugh Jackman), called "Drover", to transport her to Faraway Downs. She becomes enthralled by the land, the cattle business, a recently orphaned little aboriginal boy named Nullah, and falls in love with the handsome Drover. She fights to keep her cattle ranch operational and out of the greedy hands of evil cattle station manager Neil Fletcher (David Wenham) who's secretly working for Lesley 'King' Carney (Bryan Brown), owner of the largest cattle ranch in Australia. Epic!! :D - DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsChanning TatumAlex PettyferOlivia MunnA male stripper teaches a younger performer how to party, pick up women, and make easy money.Who cares if this had a crappy plot? It had Channing Tatum and Matthew McCaughey stripping! That's worth sitting through the shoddy plot right there! :D
- DirectorJeannot SzwarcStarsHelen SlaterFaye DunawayPeter O'TooleAfter losing a powerful orb, Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, comes to Earth to retrieve it and instead finds herself up against a wicked witch.Looking back on this movie, yea I'll admit it wasn't very good as far as superhero films, but it was a lot of so-bad-it's-good fun. Helen Slater stars as Kara, the cousin of Superman, here on Earth trying to find her home's power source called the Omega Hedren that was accidentally lost there. She befriends Lois Lane's teenaged sister, Lucy(Maureen Teefy), falls in love with a tree cutter named Ethan(Hart Bochner), and evokes the wrath of amateur witch named Selena(Faye Dunaway). Not the deepest plot, but who cares! ;D
- DirectorJerry BelsonStarsMark BlankfieldBess ArmstrongKrista ErricksonDr. Jekyll's research on a drug to avoid surgery yields a powder that transforms his timid self into a sexually uninhibited party animal, complicating his relationships with his fiancée and stripper girlfriend.OMG... this was so engrained in my childhood it's not even funny! Raunchily funny and over the top retelling of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde starring Mark Blankfield as Dr. Daniel Jekyll who accidentally invents a powder much like cocaine that turns him not into a monstrous psychotic killer, but a sleazy, oversexed lounge lizard! Hilarious!! XD
- DirectorJohn LandisStarsSteve MartinChevy ChaseMartin ShortThree actors accept an invitation to a Mexican village to perform their onscreen bandit fighter roles, unaware that it is the real thing.Me and my siblings have always had a deep affection for this movie. We actually have a contest to see who can get through it without laughing. No one ever wins! XD Three clueless out of work actors(Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short) venture to Mexico thinking they've been invited there for an acting gig when in fact after seeing one of their movies and thinking they were real Mexican avengers, the simple Mexican villagers in actuality want them to rid their village of a dastardly bad guy named El Guapo. A great underrated comedy! ;)
- DirectorStephen ChiodoStarsGrant CramerSuzanne SnyderJohn Allen NelsonAliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town.Gotta love B-Rated horror comedy films and there was a mess of them in the 80's. It was the "anything goes" attitude and not taking themselves so seriously that made them so much fun. This film is about a race of aliens (who resemble evil clowns) that arrive on Earth to capture and harvest people as food. Campy fun! :D
- DirectorAlan MetterStarsBiff YeagerKristi SomersRichard BladeJaney is new in town and soon meets Lynne, who shares her passion for dancing in general and "Dance TV" in particular. What would this list be without my favorite kind of movies? Dance movies! This one starred a young, pre-Sex in the City Sarah Jessica Parker as Janey Glenn, a Army officer's daughter who's over the moon when her family moves to Chicago... the place where her favorite show, "Dance TV", is filmed and where she wants to become a featured dancer. This also stars Helen Hunt and a pre-teen Shannon Doherty.
- DirectorJohn DerekStarsBo DerekRichard HarrisMiles O'KeeffeWhile on an African expedition with her father, Jane Parker meets Tarzan, and the two become fascinated by each other.Miles O'Keeffe in a loincloth... need I say more? I think not!! ;D
- DirectorMichael NankinDavid WechterStarsDavid NaughtonDebra ClingerJoel KenneyLeon picks college students to participate in his all night scavenger hunt. Five teams receive clues to solve leading them to the next clue site hidden in the city. This was a comedy that is near and dear to me and my siblings' hearts! Leon (Alan Solomon), a genius, summons five college students to his apartment and challenges them to participate in his latest game creation: The Great All-Nighter. He tells them about his game and instructs them to form teams. At first, the leaders refuse to play. However, rivalries between them lead all five to change their minds by the game's start time. This was one of the first PG rated movie that the Disney company made which lead them to make their sister company, Touchstone, just for the sole purpose of making films that were more for adults.
- DirectorMax ReidStarsRobert KnepperKathleen QuinlanRobert DaviA child witnesses drug dealers murder his parents. He escapes and grows up wild in the city's slums. Years later he emerges to help the residents of the area who are being terrorized by street gangs and drug dealers.Ahh... the modern retelling of Tarzan set in the urban jungle. A young boy's hippie parents are the victims of a vicious killing by a drug lord named Chopper and a rogue cop. He manages to escape the same fate and is taken in by a mentally disturbed bag lady who teaches him to watch out for the Blue Coats (Cops) and White Coats (Doctors).
After her death he becomes an urban Tarzan known as Wild Thing, defending innocents in the inner city. One night, he saves a lost social worker, Jane(Kathleen Quinlan), from being raped by the thugs of the same drug lord and develops a romantic relationship with her. Robert Knepper was so sexy in this!! :D *SWOON* - DirectorBarry LevinsonStarsNicholas RoweAlan CoxSophie WardWhen assorted people start having inexplicable delusions that lead to their deaths, a teenage Sherlock Holmes decides to investigate.Another great and under appreciated movie from my youth! This movie stars a very handsome Nicolas Rowe as young Sherlock Holmes. The story is about how he met John Watson(Alan Cox) while solving a mystery together at a boarding school.
The film is notable for including the first fully computer-generated photorealistic animated character, a knight composed of elements from a stained glass window. This effect was the first CG character to be scanned and painted directly onto film using a laser. The effect was created by Lucasfilm's John Lasseter(now chief creative officer at Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios) . - DirectorMatthew RobbinsStarsHelen SlaterChristian SlaterKeith GordonA Texas teenager cuts her hair short and becomes an outlaw martyr with her brother and friends. This was the movie that made it look fun to run away from home and break the law! LOL! A beautiful Corpus Christi teen named Billie Jean(Helen Slater), her brother Binx(Christian Slater) and their friends Putter (Yeardley Smith) and Ophelia (Martha Gehman) get in trouble with the law after an altercation with a bully who is spurned by Billie Jean and out of anger, trashes Binx's prized Honda Scooter. When she asked Hubie's father for money to repair the bike, he tries to rape her and gets accidentally shot in the shoulder by Binx.
The kids race away from the shop and become fugitives. With help from the disgruntled teenaged son of a state congressman that she befriends(who voluntarily becomes her "hostage") played by Keith Gordon, Billie Jean makes a video of her demands, featuring herself with her long, blond hair chopped into a crew cut as a sign of her rebellion. As media coverage increases Billie Jean becomes a teen icon - a symbol of youth empowerment and the evidence of the injustices adults are capable of, and young fans follow her every movement. One word.... AWESOME!!! :D - DirectorBerry GordyTony RichardsonJack WormserStarsDiana RossBilly Dee WilliamsAnthony PerkinsTracy, an aspiring designer from the slums of Chicago puts herself through fashion school in the hopes of becoming one of the world's top designers. Her ambition leads her to Rome spurring a choice between the man she loves or her newfound success.Diana Ross plays Tracy Chambers, a sassy industrious young woman living in the projects of Chicago who dreams of becoming a fashion designer. She has worked her way up from salesgirl to secretary and assistant to the head buyer at a luxury department store. Her boyfriend Brian Walker, played by Billy Dee Williams, is running unsuccessfully for office in the district. When Brian insists Tracy give up her dreams for his, Tracy flees in the middle of the night for Rome, where she becomes a muse to a former client. Loved the music(especially the Mahogany Theme), the fashions and Miss Ross had never looked more glamorous than she did in this film. ;)
- DirectorLarry CharlesStarsBob DylanJohn GoodmanJessica LangeA singer, whose career has gone on a downward spiral, is forced to make a comeback to the performance stage for a benefit concert.I can see how many people wouldn't like this film. It's very wordy, virtually plotless and doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I personally think that's the beauty of it, almost like an abstract painting. You interpret it the way you want. An iconic rock legend, Jack Fate (Bob Dylan), is bailed out of prison to perform a one-man benefit concert for a decaying future North American society. The film touches on many subjects from the futility of politics, the confusion of loosely strung government conspiracies, and the chaos created by both anarchy and Nineteen Eighty-Four-styled totalitarianism. It further reflects on life, dreams, and God's place in a seemingly increasingly chaotic world.
In some ways, the film is political: it describes how Fate sees the political landscape (people fighting for no reason, a nation without hope, governments that cannot be trusted) but at the same time Fate makes it clear that he "was always a singer and maybe no more than that". He produces no solutions to any of the problems the film presents. Rather, he makes it clear that he "stopped trying to figure everything out a long time ago." - DirectorRichard ElfmanStarsGene CunninghamMarie-Pascale ElfmanVirginia RoseThe bizarre and musical tale of a girl who travels to another dimension through the gateway found in her family's basement.Weird and over the top film from the infamous Elfman brothers! Originally shot on black-and-white film, the story of Forbidden Zone involves an alternate universe accessed through a door in the house of the Hercules family. Directed by Richard Elfman, who co-wrote the film with fellow Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo member Matthew Bright, it was the first film scored by his brother Danny Elfman, who was also Oingo Boingo's lead singer. Cult classic for fans of new wave music and midnight movies alike! ;D
- DirectorEddie MurphyStarsEddie MurphyRichard PryorRedd FoxxDuring the 1930s, a New York City illegal gambling house owner and his associates must deal with strong competition, gangsters, and corrupt cops in order to stay in business.Eddie Murphy co-stars with Richard Pryor as a father/son team running a nightclub in late-1930s Harlem while contending with gangsters and corrupt police officials. The film also features Michael Lerner, Danny Aiello, Redd Foxx (in his last film before his death in 1991), Della Reese, and Murphy's brother Charlie Murphy in his first film. The back alley fight scene will always hold a special place in my heart!
- DirectorDorian WalkerStarsRobyn LivelyDan GauthierJoshua John MillerHigh school misfit Louise, at a loss for romance, discovers magical abilities, but the teenage witch finds that she cannot conjure herself true love, so what?I love movies about how the underdog gets the opportunity to change their lives and get back at those that put them down! :D After a bike accident, sweet but nerdy 15-year old Louise Miller (Robin Lively) knocks on the door of a strange looking house, hoping to use the phone. Instead she finds a strange but welcoming woman, the seer Madame Serena (Zelda Rubinstein), who is stunned to realize that Louise is a reincarnated witch and an old friend of Serena's. On Louise's 16th birthday, her magical powers return to her through a powerful amulet she lost in a former life.
Now that Louise has the power to make her dreams come true, she casts a popularity spell to win the hottest guy in school, Brad (Dan Gauthier), without earning his love. Louise then becomes the most popular girl in school while getting back at her harassing English teacher, Mr. Weaver, and the cheerleaders who never respected her. And for other fans of this movie, how many times have you sung the "Top That" rap? LOL!! XD - DirectorPatricia BirchStarsMichelle PfeifferMaxwell CaulfieldLorna LuftA British student at a 1960s American high school must prove himself to the leader of a girls' gang whose members can only date greasers. This was my and my siblings obsession when we were kids to the point we use to actually act it out. XD I know for most fans of the original "Grease" movie, this is a sequel they wish was never made. I have a real attachment to this movie because I saw this before "Grease" and thus identify with the characters and music more. This is set two years after "Grease" starring Maxwell Caulfield as Michael Carrington, the British cousin of Sandy from the first film, who is an exchange student that becomes smitten with the leader of the Pink Ladies, Stephanie Zinone, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Of course, she's not interested because he's not a biker, so he works hard to become the coolest one there is. ;)
- DirectorRandal KleiserStarsBrooke ShieldsChristopher AtkinsLeo McKernIn the Victorian period, two children are shipwrecked on a tropical island in the South Pacific. With no adults to guide them, the two make a simple life together, unaware that sexual maturity will eventually intervene.Man, this movie was my sexual fantasy before I even knew what one was!! ;D The film tells the story of two young children marooned on a tropical island paradise in the South Pacific. With neither the guidance nor the restrictions of society, emotional feelings and physical changes arise as they reach puberty and fall in love. Ahhhh... magic!! ;D
- DirectorJames SignorelliStarsCassandra PetersonPhil RubensteinLarry Flash Jenkins"Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" is a 1988 comedy, horror movie - upon arriving in a small town where Elvira has inherited a rundown mansion, the famous horror host must battle an evil uncle, and townspeople who want her burned at the stake.Elvira in her movie debut! Los Angeles TV horror hostess Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (Cassandra Peterson) quits her job after an outburst involving sexual harassment with the station's new owner. She discovers she has been included in the will of her late great-aunt Morgana, which entitles her to all of Morgana's worldly possessions; a mansion in Fallwell, Massachusetts, a Bichon Frise who doesn't really seem to be what it appears, and a book of what she considers cooking recipes. The majority of the conservative town(descendants of puritans) are against her staying there because of her brazen and seductive exterior and fear she's a bad influence on the town's youths. Love how Elvira struts her stuff! :)
- DirectorJim AbrahamsDavid ZuckerJerry ZuckerStarsVal KilmerOmar SharifJeremy KempAn American rock and roll singer is invited to a cultural festival in East Germany in order to distract from a plot to destroy NATO submarines, but he accidentally becomes involved in a resistance plot to rescue an imprisoned scientist. An unfortunately forgotten gem from the twisted yet brilliant minds of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker, the guys who brought us "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun" movies. The film tells the story of Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer), an American pop singer (whose songs sound suspiciously like those of Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys and Little Richard), who goes to East Germany (but the film, anachronistically, also parodies Nazi Germany) to perform at a cultural festival.
While there, he becomes involved in the French resistance movement and helps the beautiful Hillary Flammond (Lucy Gutteridge) rescue her father (Michael Gough), a brilliant scientist being held by the Germans and forced to build the deadly Polaris naval mine. Love the musical numbers and especially the scene filmed entirely backwards! Genius! :D
