- DirectorPhillip NoyceStarsAngelina JolieLiev SchreiberChiwetel EjioforA CIA agent goes on the run after a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy.2/10 - Boring action-thriller that got annoying later, predictable twists, unrealistic action scenes, stupid ending, oh, what now, they want to destroy the whole world? OMG! Yeah, that was bad, b-movie, why was it in cinema?
- DirectorMichael MannStarsTom CruiseJamie FoxxJada Pinkett SmithA cab driver finds himself the hostage of an engaging contract killer as he makes his rounds from hit to hit during one night in Los Angeles.8/10 - Yes, good one! Tom Cruise was awesome, Jamie Foxx really strong, great night atmosphere of L.A. since the movie only took place during some hours during the night. Liked the score and the live-camera-vibe, the last ~25 minutes were a bit weaker, didn't like the ending too much but the rest was really cool, cool dialogues, cool characters, really fun to watch for the 2nd time!
- DirectorJean-Pierre JeunetStarsAudrey TautouMathieu KassovitzRufusDespite being caught in her imaginative world, Amelie, a young waitress, decides to help people find happiness. Her quest to spread joy leads her on a journey where she finds true love.7/10 - Very charming, really enjoyed the look, humor, vibe, the frenchy score, and the story was also really nice, very rich on details, it was nice to watch a French production instead of another US movie. For me "Amelie" couldn't keep the good quality in the 2nd half, it lost a bit, I think there was something missing in the not so great story, it was put nicely on screen in the end it was just another love story with another typical ending. Still a really nice movie.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsJack BlackMike WhiteJoan CusackAfter being kicked out of his rock band, Dewey Finn becomes a substitute teacher of an uptight elementary private school, only to try and turn his class into a rock band.4/10 - Expected more but all I got was a very predictable family friendly movie that was not funny, Jack Black put a lot of work in playing his role, so I give him 3 point and the movie 1. The super-duper-happy-ending was painful to watch, at least the band didn't win the 20K check, erm, they did. I'm fair and don't bash that harmless piece of movie, so I'll be nice and let it keep its 4 stars.
- DirectorGreg MarcksStarsHenry ThomasColin HanksBen FosterThe events leading up to an 11:14 p.m. car crash, from five very different perspectives.2,5/10 - That was nothing. I didn't care for any of the characters, there was nothing exciting happening, we knew how the movie would end after 20 minutes or so, the rest was just showing us the backstories how things came together at 11:14. Rachel Leigh Cook and Hilary Swank both were annoying in their roles, but so was the rest of the cast, they couldn't show us nothing, cos there was nothing. The whole thing was possible thanks to some stupid things some of the characters did, and after 117 minutes it was over, short summary how the pieces fit together and that was the ending. Boring.
- DirectorCraig GillespieStarsRyan GoslingEmily MortimerPaul SchneiderA delusional young man strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet.6/10 - It was definitely an intersting movie to watch, Ryan Gosling did a good job, I liked the whole cast, nice atmosphere, but it was a slow drama with no real highlights, no surprises, just a straight dramatic story. Not what I had expected, still nice to watch.
- DirectorGeorge Roy HillStarsPaul NewmanRobert RedfordRobert ShawTwo grifters team up to pull off the ultimate con.4/10 - It was okay at best, for me it was absolutely not as good as the won-7-oscars dvd cover and everybody in the whole world hyped it. Highlights was the casting, Paul Newman + Robert Redford (him I know from newer works) did a good job, look was nice, the rest was kinda boring and slow, 2 hours long, not much happend, and the ending was maybe almost a case of "really? This was what I have been waiting for 2 hours?". I don't mind not liking movies everybody else likes, that's kind of my thing. :look:
- DirectorRobert BentonStarsPaul NewmanSusan SarandonGene HackmanA retired detective accepts a simple task, unaware that it will tear open old, forgotten, but deadly wounds.5,5/10 - It could've better, let's talk about the excellent cast: Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon, James Garner, young Reese Witherspoon and even Liev Schreiber. And yes, I was not sure at the end, cos he was acting so different, but there was too: Giancarlo Esposito as a copper - Gustavo, Breaking Bad. WOW! If only there had been a better, more exicting and interesting story. It was not bad, but it wasn't really important. There was a lot of talking but not many emotions, a bit shooting here but no real highlights, nice film noir atmosphere and the score was really cool, liked the gloomy look of that movie too, but for me it simply is a movie you can watch once and then there wouldn't be nothing more to find, cos there isn't. Nice to watch but just a bit above average vor me.
- DirectorTony GoldwynStarsHilary SwankSam RockwellMelissa LeoA working mother puts herself through law school in an effort to represent her brother, who has been wrongfully convicted of murder and has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders.6/10 - True story about Betty Anne Waters, who believes her brother is innocent in jail and tries to get him out of there. It is a true story, but that doesn't really make the movie better. The acting was good, both Sam Rockwell and Hilary Swank were convincing and emotional in their roles, so that was the most positive thing about the movie. The story took a while to really get rolling, then emotions appeared, some setbacks, but Betty fought until the end. The emotional part of the movie saved it for me, it wasn't interesting what would happen next, cos you always knew how the movie would end or that it would be hard as hell to get the brother out, so no surprises at all. Nice for watching once.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsTom HanksTyler HoechlinPaul NewmanA mob enforcer's son in 1930s Illinois witnesses a murder, forcing him and his father to take to the road, and his father down a path of redemption and revenge.7,5/10 - Liked it, it was dark, atmospherique, cool, didn't show too many emotions or talk to much, and the acting was nice, Paul Newman was my favourite, Craig Daniel was fun, Jude Law had a small but cool role and I liked the actor who played the son. Tom Hanks? Usually I like him, but here he didn't impress me much, just okay at best. Great Thomas Newman score, a bit too much for me that it was in every scene but it was great, I'll buy it, so it's nice. Story? Not great, maybe not even really good, but it was enough to fill the movie and give us some memorable, emotional, cool scenes.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsSteve MartinMary SteenburgenDianne WiestFour Buckman siblings attempt to raise their children - each in their own different style - and deal with the joys and sorrows that the process brings.3,5/10 - Bought this one because Steve Martin is in it and the 2010er NBC series with the same name is based on that show. It was boring, silly, too many storylines and characters for one movie, almost no emotional connection. Steve Martin was fun, the rest okay, the professor annoying, same for the loser money who borrowed money from his dad. Nice to recognize some things that the show used, and some of the things they used in later seasons. But all in all the plots were unrealistic, it was like one thing happened and then the movie jumped like a week ahead and things had changed, but it was of course still the same movie. Show is a lot better, better writing, casting, characters, and they have more time to prepare storylines. Worth checking out if you want to know who "came up" with the idea for Parenthood. Not to forget the super-unrealistic super happy end.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsMichael DouglasBenicio Del ToroCatherine Zeta-JonesA conservative judge is appointed by the President to spearhead America's escalating war against drugs, only to discover that his teenage daughter is a crack addict. Two DEA agents protect an informant. A jailed drug baron's wife attempts to carry on the family business.6,5/10 - It was nice to watch and I liked the topics, the war on drugs effects different people in different ways. Cool. But for me the movie was missing emotions, the storylines were too small, there were no surprises, and the acting was also just okay, if you think about the huge cast with Del Toro, Douglas, Zeta-Jones and so on, that's a bit disappointing. Not bad but definitely not 4 oscars good.
- DirectorTom FordStarsColin FirthJulianne MooreMatthew GoodeAn English professor, one year after the sudden death of his boyfriend, is unable to cope with his typical days in 1960s Los Angeles.6/10 - Maybe too quiet. Colin Firth did a really good job as the lead character, and I liked Julianne Moore as well. Nice 60s look (reminded me a bit of Mad Men) with score music over some scenes instead of big dialogues just small ones, some interesting topics like fear and loneliness, I felt there was something missing for "A Single Man" to be better. A nice calm movie though.
- DirectorAtom EgoyanStarsJulianne MooreAmanda SeyfriedLiam NeesonSuspecting her husband of infidelity, gynecologist Dr. Catherine Stewart hires an escort named Chloe in order to test his faithfulness. Soon, the relationships between all three intensify.4,5/10 - It was nice to watch, the actors did a fine job, especially Julianne Moore (which I like a lot) and also Amanda Seyfried (which I didn't like much, she's pretty but had crappy roles so far) was totally okay. The story was thin, predictable, but had some thrilling moments and the atmosphere of "Chloe" was something that kept me watching the movie on without getting bored, though the ending kinda stupid. It's nice for a one-time-watch, that's all I give it.
- DirectorLev L. SpiroStarsSelena GomezDavid HenrieJake T. AustinA young wizard conjures a spell that puts her family in jeopardy.0/10 - Wow, 10 $ for the script, 50 bucks for the special effects and that was it. Nothing there for me to give it more than zero points.
- DirectorJoe MenendezStarsAlley MillsJulie GonzaloK.C. ClydeOld flames reunite and sparks are reignited at Christmastime in Florida, but the man is already engaged to another woman so a recently retired couple try to intervene with the help of their dogs.2/10 - 1 point for the movie (it's a gift cos it's a christmassy movie) and one for the beautiful/lovely Julie Gonzalo. I think I've never seen a more predictable, pale movie in my entire life. Acting was average at best, story was terribly bad and predictable, it had no depth and the characters also were boring as hell. And the dialogues acutally were painful to listen to, there were moments I had to turn away from the screen to not see what embarrasing-cheesy stuff was said. I'm sorry for Julie Gonzalo, I bought the movie only for her and it wasn't even worth watching it since her character was only a 2D stereotype.
- DirectorSeth GordonStarsJason BatemanCharlie DayJason SudeikisThree friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realize they are standing in the way of their happiness.6,5/10 - It was better than expected. I liked the cast, of course with Jason Bateman and Charlie Day from two comedies I like and Kevin Spacey. The movie was not great but had some funny moments, maybe I'd give it 0.5 more points if I hadn't seen it in a German dub (had to, not my fault). The ending was not so good but before that it was nice enough to keep me interested most of the time.
- DirectorSiu-Tung ChingStarsJet LiShengyi HuangRaymond LamA master monk tries to protect a naive young physician from a thousand-year-old snake demon. A contest of psychic powers results in mayhem.0/10 - WOW! I'm really impressed...they take more than 25 million dollars and make the worst computer effects (of course I'm talking about the last years and what is possible) you've ever seen and make a stupid movie that looks like a video game instead of a movie, you see that maybe 90 % was shot in a blue-boy. Even though I read that the story (what story? Didn't see any) is based on a traditional Chinese story, it was filmed so horribly bad, I can't find any more words. At least I watched the movie with a couple of friends and we could laugh a bit about the ridiculousness of a lot of scenes. I can't even find something in the entire movie to rate it about zero.zero. Jet Li, why?
- DirectorSatoshi KonStarsMegumi HayashibaraTôru EmoriKatsunosuke HoriWhen a machine that allows therapists to enter their patients' dreams is stolen, all hell breaks loose. Only a young female therapist, Paprika, can stop it.7/10 - Hm, hm, hm. Very weird anime movie, some say that Christopher Nolan got his "Inception" idea from this movie and yeah, that could be true. It's about a device that makes it possible to walk into and record dreams of persons but it gets out of control when the devices, the DCI minis are stolen and then the boarders between dreams and reality disappear. It was fun, not funny, but different. I mostly know Miyazaki animes and they are very easy to understand - this one was difficult at times but I made it. Cool animation style, interesting story. Nice one.
- DirectorJonathan SegalStarsDan ByrdEmily VanCampRichard JenkinsA troubled high-school kid pretending to be dying of cancer confronts problems with his new girlfriend and terminally ill father as he struggles with his daily existence.7,5/10 - It maybe was not as great as I wish it would have been but it still was a really nice indie drama with realistic look, characters, dialogues and camera work. The story is not really more than what you would read in the synopsis. Dan Byrd does a fine job as the title character, he carries the movie and is believable as the sarcastic boy that deals with his not easy life. Emily VC plays Emily, she was really cute, it was obvious how then 24 years old Emily tried to downplay her age and she sounded different, more like a young girl. Of course that was cute, I really liked her character but don't expect too much, she didn't have too many scenes and we didn't really get to know her character. Emily more or less was there as a love interest and that was it. But she was nice to watch and cute. Richard Jenkins (SFU) also was a very strong choice for playing Norman's father. All in all it was a straight movie that wasn't as dark as you would expect from the topic, it had a lot of light humour in it and that created a nice atmosphere.
- DirectorCraig LucasStarsMatthew PerryBen FosterGinnifer GoodwinA regular guy struggles with a repressive home and professional life, as well as making amends for the trouble his free-spirited brother and sister cause around town.5/10 - Though the cast was really good including the 5 leads Matthew Perry, Lauren Graham, Ginnifer Goodwin, Ben Foster and Hilary Swank, the movie was just pure average. I like independent movies that try not to be like every blockbuster, but when there's no appealing story, a calm film also gets into trouble. That's all I can say about this movie. Basically it is not more than you can read on the dvd back cover, there really didn't happen much and the humor was almost non existent. But it was worth watching for Lauren Graham.
