1993 Films From Best To Worst
In my own opinion of course, and featuring all films released in 1993 I've currently seen. As such, this is an ever-evolving list, but as it currently stands, I consider the first two entries to be excellent, the third just a notch below, numbers 4 to 9 to be really good, 10 fine, 11 to 13 less and less entertaining and the last entry quite blah.

14 titles
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsSam NeillLaura DernJeff GoldblumA pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.Nearly ten years later, Spielberg's masterpiece is still, without a doubt, the best dinosaur film there is. By far. The movie is a timeless marvel of adventure and excitement, with memorable visuals and a rousing score that can be watched again and again and again.
- DirectorMarco BrambillaStarsSylvester StalloneWesley SnipesSandra BullockA police officer is brought out of suspended animation in prison to pursue an old ultra-violent nemesis who is loose in a non-violent future society. One of Sylvester Stallone's best films (his best?), Demolition Man is a brilliant, underrated, hilarious, badass, fun sci-fi romp. One of the great dystopia films out there.
- DirectorRowdy HerringtonStarsBruce WillisSarah Jessica ParkerDennis FarinaComing from a police family, Tom Hardy ends up fighting his uncle after the murder of his father. Tom believes the killer is another cop and goes on the record with his allegations. Demoted then to river duty, the killer taunts Tom.Highly underrated murder mystery that just has a great feel to it all. Plus it features one of the greatest car scenes in film history.
- DirectorHenry SelickStarsDanny ElfmanChris SarandonCatherine O'HaraJack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.Contrarily to popular belief, NOT directed by Tim Burton, Henry Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas is an enduring classic. The stop-motion visuals are memorable and the songs are fun.
- DirectorJeremiah S. ChechikStarsJohnny DeppMary Stuart MastersonAidan QuinnA mentally ill young woman finds her love in an eccentric man who models himself after Buster Keaton.A nice small quirky romantic drama with great actors.
- DirectorOliver StoneStarsHiep Thi LeTommy Lee JonesHaing S. NgorDuring the Vietnam War, a Vietnamese woman struggles hustling on the streets, where she comes face to face with those involved in the conflict around her.Based on a true story, this is less of a war movie than the previous two films in Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy, instead more of a "biography" film, it is also possibly the weakest of the three. One of the problems is that though the main character goes through many ordeals and suffers many hardships, you never really feel for her, connect with her. Despite his prominent presence in the posters, Tommy Lee Jones is really more of a secondary character here and only appears about an hour and ten minutes into the movie. Heaven & Earth is still a very well-made film, with some beautiful shots of Vietnam (actually Thailand) and particularly brilliant scenes in America.
- DirectorRenny HarlinStarsSylvester StalloneJohn LithgowMichael RookerA botched mid-air heist results in suitcases full of cash being searched for by various groups throughout the Rocky Mountains. The film that relaunched Sylvester Stallone's career after a bit of a slump is a really fun action romp, possibly director Renny Harlin's best film. It's a simple well-made flick that doesn't try to be anything else than it is, does it really well, and features one of the most daring stunts shot on film.
- DirectorGene QuintanoStarsEmilio EstevezSamuel L. JacksonJon LovitzIn this Lethal Weapon (1987) spoof, two mismatched LA cops investigate a case involving cocaine-laced girl scout cookies.Really funny Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker-style Lethal Weapon parody.
- DirectorRobert HarmonStarsJean-Claude Van DammeRosanna ArquetteKieran CulkinSam, an escaped convict, lands up on a farmland owned by a widow. When he learns that a ruthless contractor is trying to take over her land, he helps her to fight against the injustice.More decent classic action fare from Van Damme, without John Woo's directorial maestria but featuring the writing talents of Joe Eszterhas and Richard Marquand, of Basic Instinct and Return Of The Jedi fame respectively.
- DirectorJohn WooStarsJean-Claude Van DammeLance HenriksenYancy ButlerA woman hires a drifter as her guide through New Orleans in search of her missing father. In the process, they discover a deadly game of cat and mouse behind his disappearance.John Woo's first, underrated American film. It's classic action fare, with Van Damme in full form, a nice New Orleans setting and a fun score by Graeme Revell.
- DirectorLuis LlosaStarsTom BerengerBilly ZaneJ.T. WalshA veteran US Marine sniper is partnered with a rookie sniper as his spotter to take out a politician and a rebel leader in the jungles of Panama.OK entertainment. Not quite sure how it spawned three sequels though.
- DirectorJing WongSammo Kam-Bo HungStarsJet LiSharla CheungChingmy YauA wild, rollicking martial-arts fantasy extravaganza that features prized swords and swordsmen, a crazy monk attached to a rolling boulder (yup!), serious clan and cult rivalries, and lots of magic and flying.Very strange film and not just because it seems to end in the middle.
- DirectorSammo Kam-Bo HungStarsFan YangCynthia KhanRosamund KwanA young martial arts teacher is drawn into a plan to reform Imperial China.Don't remember this one too much, apart that it was decent and quite violent.
- DirectorGurinder ChadhaStarsKim VithanaJimmi HarkishinSarita KhajuriaA group of women of Indian descent take a trip together from their home in Birmingham, England to the beach resort of Blackpool. The events of the day lead them to better mutual understanding and solidarity.Rather boring
