The list consist in actresses that have done great performances in, at least, 5 years until these days. I disregarded actresses like Liv Ullman, Gena Rowlands and Ellen Burstyn because these actress or are practically retired or aren't receiving good roles to play. Also I don't know much of no-american actresses, so don't blame me if the list missed a great actress overseas.

1. Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore was born Julie Anne Smith in Fort Bragg, North Carolina on December 3, 1960, the daughter of Anne (Love), a social worker, and Peter Moore Smith, a paratrooper, colonel, and later military judge. Her mother moved to the U.S. in 1951, from Greenock, Scotland. Her father, from ...

On January 30, 1937, renowned theatre actor Michael Redgrave was performing in a production of Hamlet in London. During the curtain call, the show's lead, Laurence Olivier, announced to the audience: "tonight a great actress was born". This was in reference to his co-star's newborn daughter, ...

Vanessa is a legend, and just that fact that in her 70's she still bring to us performances like the one in 'Atonement' must justify her position in this rank.

3. Kate Winslet

Actress | Titanic

Ask Kate Winslet what she likes about any of her characters, and the word "ballsy" is bound to pop up at least once. The British actress has made a point of eschewing straightforward pretty-girl parts in favor of more devilish damsels; as a result, she's built an eclectic resume that runs the gamut...

She was great in Heavenly Creatures as she was great in Carnage, her carreer now spans almost 2 decades, and the best actress of the 00's just getting better, her performance in 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' has the chance of be the most nuanced in the last decade.

4. Tilda Swinton

Actress | We Need to Talk About Kevin

The iconoclastic gifts of the highly striking and ferociously talented actress Tilda Swinton have been appreciated by art house crowds and international audiences alike. After her stunning Oscar-winning turn as a high-powered corporate attorney in the George Clooney starring and critically-lauded ...

She is, with no doubt, the most versatile actress in these days, and performances like she gave in 'Julia', 'I Am Love', and 'We Need to talk about Kevin' are compelling and deep in a way that few actresses can do.

5. Meryl Streep

Actress | Out of Africa

Considered by many critics to be the greatest living actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Academy Award an astonishing 21 times, and has won it three times. Meryl was born Mary Louise Streep in 1949 in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf (Wilkinson), a commercial artist, and Harry William ...

Do I need to exemplify the qualities of Miss Streep? In 'The Iron Lady' she gave a amazing performance in a terrible movie, and almost no one do this like she does. I just hope she start to do better movies, her filmography will say thank you in the future.

6. Michelle Williams

Actress | Blue Valentine

A small-town girl born and raised in rural Kalispell, Montana, Michelle Ingrid Williams is the daughter of Carla Ingrid (Swenson), a homemaker, and Larry Richard Williams, a commodity trader and author. Her ancestry is Norwegian, as well as German, British Isles, and other Scandinavian. She was ...

I say almost all the time that Michelle is the best actress of her generation, I'm not kidding, and I don't have to prove this, what she does with characters is incredible, so many times she create them from nowhere to result in such mesmerizing performances that I even can't believe. 'Wendy and Lucy' and 'Blue Valentine' are some examples.

Juliette Binoche was born in Paris, France, to Monique Yvette Stalens, a director, teacher, and actress, and Jean-Marie Binoche, a sculptor, director, and actor. Her mother was born in Czestochowa, Poland, of French, Walloon Belgian, and Polish descent, while her father is French. Juliette was only...

This woman let me hypnotized by her performances, right now she doesn't work in many american productions, so you need to see 'Flight of the Red Balloon', 'Summer Hours' and, especially, 'Certified Copy' to be involved by her.

8. Marion Cotillard

Actress | La Môme

Academy Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard was born on September 30, 1975 in Paris. Cotillard is the daughter of Jean-Claude Cotillard, an actor, playwright and director, and Niseema Theillaud, an actress and drama teacher. Her father's family is from Brittany.

Raised in Orléans, France, she ...

Her Piaf is historic, and since then she does a great performance every year, in 2009 she stole 'Nine' and 'Public Enemies' from her co-stars, in 2010 was the soul of 'Inception', last year she was lovely in 'Midnight in Paris' and natural as never in 'Contagion'. I can't wait to her next performances.

Laura Leggett Linney was born in New York City on February 5, 1964, into a theatre family. Her father was prominent playwright Romulus Linney, whose own great-grandfather was a congressman from North Carolina. Her mother, Miriam Anderson (Leggett), is a nurse. Although she did not live in her ...

She acts in a so natural way that even when she was in period pieces like 'John Adams' I can't see the actress, I just can see the character, add this to her flawless and nuanced performance in 'The Savages', and her recent work in the dramedy 'The Big C', that's enough to put her in this list.

Being good or being bad, Blanchett always sparkles her roles, and never let herself down even when she does a terrible movie like 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'. 'I'm Not There', 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' and 'Hanna' were all featured from great performances of this classy lady.

Elegant Nicole Kidman, known as one of Hollywood's top Australian imports, was actually born in Honolulu, Hawaii, while her Australian parents were there on educational visas.

Kidman is the daughter of Janelle Ann (Glenny), a nursing instructor, and Antony David Kidman, a biochemist and clinical ...

She have done some crap movies with bad performances, but now she's back on top and I hope that she will track the type of performance that she did in 'Rabbit Hole' and that once gave to her the title of the 'best actress of the decade'.

12. Glenn Close

Actress | Fatal Attraction

Eight time Academy Award-nominated actress Glenn Close was born and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. She is the daughter of Elizabeth Mary H. "Bettine" (Moore) and William Taliaferro Close (William Close), a prominent doctor. Both of her parents were from upper-class families.

She's the best young actress in these days, and since her Academy Award Nominated performance in 'Atonement', Ronan show such different performances that is impossible to me to don't put her in as higher as I can. Her performances in 'The Lovely Bones', 'The Way Back' and 'Hanna' were all fascinating.

15. Maggie Smith

One of the world's most famous and distinguished actresses, Dame Maggie Smith was born Margaret Natalie Smith in Essex. Her Scottish mother, Margaret (Hutton), worked as a secretary, and her English father, Nathaniel Smith, was a teacher at Oxford University. Smith has been married twice: to actor ...

Even if she's not acting in many productions as she did before, her style of acting is so unique and interesting that her work in 'Capturing Mary' and 'Downton Abbey' is enough to be here.

16. Helen Mirren

Actress | The Queen

Dame Helen Mirren was born in Queen Charlotte's Hospital in West London. Her mother, Kathleen Alexandrina Eva Matilda (Rogers), was from a working-class English family, and her father, Vasiliy Petrovich Mironov, was a Russian-born civil servant, from Kuryanovo, whose own father was a diplomat. ...

She can play any Elizabeth that she wants, but even if it's her best role, Mirren can act circles in any genre, and does this with such class as any other can't, probably, do.

17. Natalie Portman

Actress | Black Swan

Natalie Portman is the first person born in the 1980s to have won the Academy Award for Best Actress (for Black Swan (2010)).

Natalie was born Natalie Hershlag on June 9, 1981, in Jerusalem, Israel. She is the only child of Avner Hershlag, an Israeli-born doctor, and Shelley Stevens, an ...

If her character is fragile, she's brings everyone down, and when it's not, she's even better, her performance in 'Black Swan' still scares me.

18. Naomi Watts

Actress | Mulholland Dr.

Naomi Ellen Watts was born on September 28, 1968 in Shoreham, England to Myfanwy Edwards "Miv" (Roberts), an antiques dealer and costume/set designer, and Peter Watts (Peter Anthony Watts), Pink Floyd's road manager. Watts loves diversity in her filmography, her recent roles includes brave and fragile characters in lead or supporting roles. 'Eastern Promises', 'Funny Games', 'Mother and Child', 'Fair Game' and, even, 'J. Edgar' are there to prove that she can do anything.

19. Charlize Theron

Producer | Monster

Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, a city in the greater Johannesburg area, in South Africa, the only child of Gerda Theron (née Maritz) and Charles Theron. She was raised on a farm outside the city. Theron is of Afrikaner (Dutch, with some French Huguenot and German) descent, and Afrikaner ...

I still feel that her beauty let Theron underrated as an actress, 'In the Valley of Elah', 'The Road', and the recently watched 'Young Adult' show some kind of range that can't and, hopefully, won't be forgot.

20. Carey Mulligan

Actress | Never Let Me Go

Carey Hannah Mulligan is a British actress. She was born May 28, 1985, in Westminster, London, England, to Nano (Booth), a university lecturer, and Stephen Mulligan, a hotel manager. Her mother is from Llandeilo, Wales, and Carey also has Irish and English ancestry.

It has been something like 3 years that Mulligan 'happened', and since then this girl didn't stop to give great performances. She should have won an Oscar for 'An Education', and her performance in 'Wall Street 2', 'Never Let Me Go', 'Drive', and 'Shame' were all amazing, especially the last one.

21. Amy Adams

Actress | Arrival

Amy Lou Adams was born in Vicenza, Veneto, Italy, to American parents, Kathryn (Hicken) and Richard Kent Adams, a U.S. serviceman who was stationed at Caserma Ederle in Italy at the time. She was raised in a Mormon family of seven children in Castle Rock, Colorado, and has English, as well as ...

She has the cute factor, and Adams always played the 'cute' one in the many ways possible: the silly cute in Junebug, the lost cute in Doubt or, even, a cute princess (can I handle this?) in Enchanted, but since she played against the type in 'The Fighter' she earned my respect and my wishes for more diversified roles in her filmography.

22. Sigourney Weaver

Actress | Alien Resurrection

Sigourney Weaver has created a host of memorable characters, both dramatic and comic, ranging from Ripley in Alien to Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist to Gwen/Tawny in Galaxy Quest and most recently, 14-year-old Kiri in Avatar: The Way of Water. With a career spanning over 50 years, Weaver has ...

As any other actress in their 60's that is not Meryl Streep, Weaver don't usually get good roles, but when she finds one such like in 'Prayers for Bobby', she nailed it.

23. Penélope Cruz

Known outside her native country as the "Spanish enchantress", Penélope Cruz Sánchez was born in Madrid to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sánchez, a hairdresser. When she's on screen, she's on fire, I'll never forget the first that I watched this woman in 'Volver' or in 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona', I mean, her performance in 'Nine' is also unforgettable in the same league as she's in 'Broken Embraces'.

As a child, due to her ...

This is a bit of fanboy, but Miss Roberts has the charisma that few actresses have and her performance in films like 'Charlie Wilson's War', 'Duplicity', and 'Eat, Pray, Love' show that she can be great with the appropriate role.
