Film Noir and the Black List
No genre of Hollywood was more represented in the black list - many of the outstanding directors , the biggest black listed star - John Garfield , many of the key noir screen writers . Whether or not film noir was particularly left wing , most of the leftist writers were more cynical , realistic , and artistic . Possibly the pessimistic nature of noir made it's film makers more of a target . Many of the black listees also later made noirs in Britain , France , Italy .
The black list might even be part of the cause of the lightening of noir as the fifties went on.
No distinction is made between the totally black listed , and those that named names at some point to keep their careers , mention is also made of the so called grey list - those who were under pressure - people like Edward G. Robinson , Orson Welles , Vincent Price ...
Starting with the directors , the writers ( they were obviously believers in the auteur theory ) , the actors , and the rest , although listing all the black listed contributors to each film .

- DirectorEdward DmytrykStarsSam WanamakerLea PadovaniKathleen RyanOne of the few (if any at the time this film was made) films shot in England with New York City's 'Little Italy" as the locale. This was Edward Dmytryk's first film after he had refused to tell a Congressional Committee whether or not he was, or had ever been, a member of the Communist Party. This is a 'runaway production' shot in England for political reasons and not for the usual USA tax-break reasons. Geremio, a young Italian immigrant to New York City, works as a bricklayer and is courting an Italian girl, Annunziata, by mail. He lies to her that he owns his own home and, after they are married, has to rent one for their three-day honeymoon. The years pass and they are unable to save enough money to get out of their slum tenement, and the 1929 depression brings even harder times to the family that now includes three children. Geremio, in order to make enough money to care for his family, exploits his "comrades" in dangerous construction work. This practice leads to the accidental death of his best friend, and, in grief, Geremio also becomes unfaithful to his wife. The messages of the film -- life is aimless and no man can judge the true worth of another man -- are pounded on for most of the two-hour running time.Director and producer Edward Dmytryk , made in Britain , written by Ben Barzman , starred Sam Wanamaker , Phil Brown in a bit part

At her apartment, Steve finds Bertolati dead as a result of a heart attack, according to Angela. But, in order to prevent a scandal, Angela urges Steve to get rid of the body without calling the police. Smitten Steve agrees and takes the body to his car with the intention of staging a crash. He is about to go do that when he finds out that Angela was indeed the lover of the dead man, and he hesitates. But a new character makes a violent entrance - a brutal ex-convict named Nino (Rossano Brazzi) - and he turns out to be Angela's husband. A fight ensues during which Nino gets hold of Steve's gun and shoots Bertolati's corpse, thereby implicating Steve, now less smitten with Angela than he was earlier, in the death of Bertolati. Nino then tries to kill Steve by pushing him into the car and into a nearby abyss, but Steve turns the tables and kills the aggressive Nino, hurling him into the car, with Bertolati, and into the abyss. Steve now suspects Angela's conduct and sincerity despite her efforts to convince him she is on the level. While she is waiting in a car for him, along comes cripple Brad Ames, who she put in that condition, and he gets in and drives the car over a cliff, leaving no survivors in the two-passenger crash.
