- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.Dark, dystopian, futuristic, Ridley Scott directing, brilliant cinematography, brilliant story, poignant. Just a stunning film, with or without narration, but obviously better without (director's cut)
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin. One of the most famous scenes in all of horror, and this is a sci-fi horror. The best, nastiest alien of all time:scary, slimy, slithery, stomach churning(in or rather 'out' joke). Take one gloomy starship - god knows how many light years from earth. A mostly motley crew, and a fantastic heroine in Sigourney Weaver, and a bastard for an alien, and you have a film my friends.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDan O'BannonDre PahichBrian NarelleIn the far reaches of space, a small crew, 20 years into their solitary mission, find things beginning to go hilariously wrong.A brilliant comedy and satire, and meant to be an influence for Alien. This film though as a hundred thousand light years apart in relation to that film. It features a philosphical bomb, a very cute alien, and the ultimate surfing experience.
- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.Probably the best star wars film. It features a very famous reveal, which blew me away at the time even though I should have seen it coming. Darth vader at his nasty smart best, a space slug chasing the millenium falcon. R2 D2 getting spat out by a swamp monster. The first appearance of Yoda. So many good things in this films, just a real pleasure to watch.
- DirectorRobert WiseStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWhen an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth, Admiral James T. Kirk resumes command of the overhauled USS Enterprise in order to intercept it.This film got a very mixed reception at the time. I agree it is probably more a cerebral experience than action packed. Yet the reveal at the end I found genuinely mind blowing. The films has its flaws; it's a little slow paced, and a little worthy as well.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.Rightly acclaimed as a classic. Its science fiction effects still hold up as well. It is not an easy film, but it is rewarding. There's a book which fills in the missing gaps if you want them filled. The scenes with HAL (ai computer) contain the finest in the science fiction genre.
- DirectorFred M. WilcoxStarsWalter PidgeonAnne FrancisLeslie NielsenA starship crew in the 23rd century goes to investigate the silence of a distant planet's colony, only to find just two survivors, a powerful robot, and the deadly secret of a lost civilization.Perhaps the first true classic 'intelligent' science fiction film. A story with a very profound conclusion which for the time is surprising. The special effects are a little, as you might expect of the time. Yet they are still good enough, and the story is really one of ideas, and pretty frightening ones as well.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsMatthew McConaugheyAnne HathawayJessica ChastainWhen Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.Intelligent film with fine special effects featuring a journey through a black hole as its centerpiece. It works on several levels as well.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world. This is one heck of a good film. It is based on a Kurt Vonnegut short story which helps as well. Dealing with alien contact in a tense absorbing way. Beautiful science fiction effects. Head for this film as quickly as you can if you like your science fiction cerebral and edgy.
- DirectorAndrei TarkovskyStarsNatalya BondarchukDonatas BanionisJüri JärvetA psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane. The greatest most boring film you will ever watch. I'm being a little cheeky here, but this won't be for everyone's taste. It is mostly pyschological science fiction and has subtitles as well. Therefore not for the faint hearted, but this is a profound watch. It stays with you.
