For almost 100 years comic books have provided fantasy, escape, and compensation for adolescents who often feel powerless and misunderstood in their daily lives. Fantasies of power are inevitably violent, but the violence in comic books has no consequences. After all, it's just the stroke of a pen... But what happens when the comic book meets real war? In this age of hundreds of television stations, 24-hour news, worldwide instantaneous satellite transmission and thousands of web sites updated hourly, the lowly comic book has become a documentary medium, providing a real understanding of the human dimensions of war, genocide and revolution. - DirectorCordelia DvorakStarsJohn BergerSelçuk DemirelKatya Berger AndreadakisArt, politics and motorcycles: on the occasion of his 90th birthday John Berger or The Art of Looking is an intimate portrait of the writer and art-critic whose ground-breaking work on seeing has shaped our understanding for over five decades. How paintings become narratives and stories turn into images, rarely does anybody demonstrate this as poignantly as Berger. The seeing is his life subject, the "looking eye" his intellectual burning glass. From conviction he lived and worked for decades in a small mountain village in the French Alps. The nearness to nature and the world of the peasants belonged antipodically to him as well as his motorcycle that for him deals so much with presence, and so with drawing and writing. Covering an astonishing range of topics and art-forms, Berger's work is founded also on artistic dialogues. Echoing some of these most unusual and astonishing collaborations birthday John Berger or The Art of Looking introduces Berger's art of looking with theatre wizard Simon McBurney, film-director Michael Dibb, visual artist John Christie, cartoonist Selçuk Demiral, photographer Jean Mohr as well as two of his children, film-critic Katya Berger and the painter Yves Berger. The film's prelude and starting point is Bergers mind-boggling experience of the restored vision after a successful cataract removal surgery. There, in the cusp of the clouding eyesight, Berger re-discovers - already over 80 - the irredeemable wonder of seeing. Realised as a portrait in works and collaborations, this creative documentary takes a different approach to biography, with John Berger leading in his favorite role of the storyteller.

- DirectorTrevor MeierStarsMichael AblemanPortia Antonia AlexisSabina AliAbout people making a fresh start towards building a new economy. Watch as several organizations move towards a more cooperative future by experimenting with open and non-traditional business models. By rewarding human effort fairly and proportionately instead of obsessing about the bottom line, these revolutionary businesses are creating a more people-friendly future, creating new ways to make money and make it sustainably. A New Economy features seven interwoven stories. Among them are a small craft-brew coop, a peer-to-peer open hardware lab and an urban agricultural social enterprise: London Brewing Co-op follows five guys who love beer as they jump-start a tasty craft-brew cooperative within a local sustainable food ecosystem in London, Ontario. While they face the challenges of starting a new business and learning to work together democratically, several members are also starting new families while the group wrestles with the day-to-day struggles of growing the enterprise to a sustainable size. Sensorica follows a Romanian laser physicist with a big heart who works collaboratively with other high-tech professionals in Montreal, Quebec and around the world to prototype new socially responsible technologies while at the same time developing a whole new type of democratic open- source peer-to-peer organization-the open value network. Sole Food Street Farms follows a Vancouver, B.C.-based social enterprise transforming the way we work and eat by adapting unconventional urban spaces for large-scale food production- with a social twist. While hailed by local chefs as the best produce in the city, many of Sole Food's dozens of employees face barriers to traditional employment. Their unique model creates both an equitable and fair workplace that understands their needs while producing transformation and healing through the creation of a high-quality product. In addition, a string quartet weaves beautiful music together with conversations on the core rewards of cooperation. Other stories examine housing, public spaces and the use of technology in building community - all the while blending the economic and social needs of a functioning new economy with cooperative values and principles as its base.
