Stop the Music!
We came to dread the sound of Wagner's "The Ride Of The Valkyries," as it was the official cut-off song when the producers decided a winner's speech had gone on too long. This year's broadcast included a bottom scroll that included more people to thank, so no one really should've needed more than 45 seconds to speak — and the show already felt long. That said, it was still grating to hear that music drown people out, and it usually happened when a winner was trying to use their moment to say something of real substance. Sorry, Alejandro González Iñárritu! The one exception was when Ennio Morricone won for Best Score. The musicians showed their respect for the composer by letting him give a full speech.
