Kovu and Kiara are the main couple of "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride". Kiara is the daughter of Simba and Nala, Princess of the Pridelands and Kovu is the son of Zira, one of Scar's loyal followers who was chosen to become his heir, but at the same time, both struggle with their roles and idenities and question who they are and where they belong.
Kovu and Kiara first meet in their childhood when Kiara wonders out into the Pridelands and comes across Kovu. They quickly find themselves in danger from crocodiles, but work together and managed to escape. Kovu and Kiara become friends, but are soon separated when their parents arrive and force the young cubs apart since Scar's followers were banished to the Outlands. Kovu and Kiara remained separated for many years as Kiara grew into a beautiful young woman with the responsibility of someday becoming Queen while Kovu was trained by his mother to take revenge against Simba and to uphold Scar's legacy. Eventually, Kovu and Kiara found themselves reunited as young adults when Kovu rescues Kiara from a wildfire that was set by his siblings in their plot to eliminate Simba by taking advantage of Kovu and Kiara's childhood friendship.
However, everything begins to change the more time Kovu and Kiara begin to spend together. Kiara teaches Kovu the joys of life as he never got to experience any real fun growing up while Kovu teaches Kiara the ways of the hunt to improve her skills. Kovu and Kiara soon begin to develop romantic feelings for each other and quickly realize they have fallen in love, but it's complicated as Kovu remains conflicted about his mission while Simba disapproves of their relationship. Eventually, Kovu decides to abandon his mission and prepares to confess the truth to Kiara along with his love for her, but is interrupted by Simba who takes Kovu aside to explain to him the true story of Scar.
However, they are ambushed by Zira and the rest of Scar's followers, having realized Kovu's change of heart and attack Simba despite Kovu's efforts to protect him. In the aftermath, Kovu rejects Scar's legacy and leaves the Outlanders, but believing he was involved in the ambush, Simba banishes Kovu, much to Kiara's heartbreak and prevents her from seeing him as Kovu is forced out by the rest of the animals. Realizing the ambush wasn't his fault and knowing that Kovu's love for her is real, Kiara is left heartbroken by her father's actions and further more when Simba makes it his personal mission to keep Kiara and Kovu apart. Kiara is devastated but disobeys her father and runs away to find Kovu.
After a long search, Kovu and Kiara are happily reunited and declare their love for each other, with Kovu opting they runaway together to form their own pride. However, Kiara convinces Kovu they must return to unite their prides otherwise the Circle of Life will remain broken and unbalanced. Kovu and Kiara return to find their prides at war, but managed to stop the fighting and convince the Outlanders to join the Pridelanders, all except for Zira who attacks Kiara, but is killed after falling into a raging river. Kovu and Kiara are reunited once more and finally seeing they both truly love each other, Simba apologizes to Kovu and accepts their love.
By the end of the movie, Kovu and Kiara get married and finally succeed in uniting their prides and will someday rule the Pridelands together as King and Queen.
