Hercules and Meg are the main couple of "Hercules". Hercules is a demi-god, half human/half god, with his sights set on becoming a true hero, while Meg is a young woman who lost faith in people and in love and wants nothing more than to regain her freedom and be left alone.
Hercules is the son of Zeus and Hera, who was stripped of his Godhood after he was abducted during his infancy and became mortal, but still retained his godly strength. Although he was bullied and ostracized growing up, Hercules is kind and caring, with a strong sense of hope and optimism while also somewhat naive. After learning the truth about his parentage, Hercules sets out to become a true hero in order to return home to Mount Olympus. Meg is a sassy, headstrong and fiercely independent young women, who is a minion to Hades, Lord of the Underworld, after she sold her soul to save her boyfriend's life, only to be left for another woman. Meg was not only left with a broken heart, but also a cynical outlook on life and love.
Hercules and Meg first met during one of Hercules's first acts of becoming a true hero when he rescued her from the River Guardian. Hercules instantly finds himself developing romantic feelings for the beautiful, independent, headstrong, female fatale. Due to her troubled past, however, Meg shows no interest in Hercules, believing him to be no different than any other guy and only seeks to regain her freedom. Eventually though, Meg comes to realize Hercules is truly a genuine person and slowly finds herself becoming impressed with him upon witnessing his bravery in defeating the Hydra and more creatures that Hades sends his way. To prevent Hercules from interfering in his plans to conquer Mount Olympus, Hades sends Meg to seduce Hercules in order to discover his weakness and in exchange, guarantees her freedom.
Hercules and Meg sneak away and spend a romantic evening together and in the process the pair become closer. Hercules learns of Meg's fear of getting hurt again and Meg discovers how Hercules previously wished to be like everyone else when he was younger. Hercules and Meg fall deeply in love and almost share their first kiss until they are interrupted by Phil and Pegasus, ending their date. Although Meg attempts to deny her feelings, she comes to accept she is in love with Hercules and refuses to help Hades any longer. Realizing that Meg is Hercules weakness, Hades uses her to bargain with Hercules to give up his strength for one day to ensure Meg's safety. However, shortly after, Hercules comes to learn of Meg's alliance with Hades, leaving him completely heartbroken and Meg riddled with guilt over her actions and involvement.
With his strength gone, Hades sets his plan into motion to conquer Mount Olympus by freeing the Titans and sends a Cyclops to kill Hercules. Still heartbroken by Meg's betrayal, Hercules has almost no will left to fight until he is encouraged by Phil. Hercules successfully manages to defeat the Cyclops, but is almost crushed by a falling pillar until Meg sacrifices herself and saves him, redeeming herself. Due to Meg's injury, the deal with Hades is broken and Hercules' strength is restored. Hercules and Meg reconcile with Meg confessing her love for Hercules and encourages him to go after Hades while Meg is left in Phil's care. Hercules manages to save the Gods and Mount Olympus, but is devastated to return to find Meg dead, having passed away from her injuries, leaving him once again heartbroken by the loss of the woman he loves.
In order to save her, Hercules deals with Hades to free her spirit from the River Styx and take him instead. Hercules begins to drastically age as he swims to save Meg, but his actions to save her prove Hercules as a true hero and cause him to regain his Godhood. Hercules returns Meg's spirit to her body, returning her to life. Hercules declares his love for Meg and the two almost kiss until they are summoned to Mount Olympus, where Zeus and Hera welcome their son home at last. However, Hercules decides to give up being a God, choosing to remain mortal and return to Earth to be with Meg. Hercules and Meg officially become a couple and finally share their first kiss.
