- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsOlivia ColmanEmma StoneRachel WeiszIn early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne.My Favourite cinema film of the year so far, it's simply brilliant and more. It's coarse and it's sharp, It's clever and it's silly, it's clean and it's dirty. Not like any period drama you have ever seen before. With 3 incredible performances from ; Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. Highly recommended . 8.4/10
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsSteve CarellFalk HentschelMatt O'LearyA victim of a brutal attack finds a unique and beautiful therapeutic outlet to help him through his recovery process.A victim of a brutal attack finds a unique and beautiful therapeutic outlet to help him through his recovery process. and what makes it even more incredible is that it is a true story, something I didn't realise until the end credits. Steve Carell is once again brilliant as Mark the man recovering from PTSD who he is surrounded by a great support network that help him in real life and in his fantasy world where they fight his demons along side his alter ego.
This film appears to be grossly underrated, imo 7.7/10 - DirectorWash WestmorelandStarsKeira KnightleyFiona ShawDominic WestColette is pushed by her husband to write novels under his name. Upon their success, she fights to make her talents known, challenging gender norms. An interesting biography about a country girl with a talent for writing who is exploited by a Parisian libertine who she married in the latter part of the 19th Century. Keira Knightly puts in a good performance as Colette along side Dominic West who plays the publisher husband who makes the most of his wife's talent under his name 'Willy' rather than hers. This isn't really just about women's status in 19th century society because other women published around that time, but it does maybe suggest a turning point? the film is more about the relationship between the 2 of them and the people they have around them .
7.2/10 - DirectorJason ReitmanStarsHugh JackmanVera FarmigaJ.K. SimmonsIn 1987, U.S. Senator Gary Hart's presidential campaign is derailed when he's caught in a scandalous love affair.Tonight's cinema film, the fourth biography and in 4th place too. Even a good performance from Hugh Jackman can't save this from being a relatively dull political drama. A brief affair halts a possible US Presidential candidate in 1988, Gary who? . Maybe a film just for the US market really ?, surprised they bothered to release this in the UK when there are other (potentially) good films available. 6.2/10
- DirectorJon S. BairdStarsSteve CooganJohn C. ReillyShirley HendersonLaurel and Hardy, the world's most famous comedy duo, attempt to reignite their film careers as they embark on what becomes their swan song: a grueling theatre tour of post-war Britain. It's quite a sad story about their swan song tour of the UK in 1953. Being a big fan might bias my rating a bit , but John C Reilly and Steve Coogan were just brilliant. 8.4/10 first watch I highly recommend it 8.6/10 second watch
- DirectorNeil BurgerStarsKevin HartBryan CranstonNicole KidmanA comedic look at the relationship between a wealthy man with quadriplegia and an unemployed man with a criminal record who's hired to help him.Today's cinema film , yep , another biography(#6) albeit a remake. TBH I wasn't really looking forward it because I love the original (The Intouchables) and Kevin Hart fills me with dread. However, fear not , Hart shows some class that I haven't seen before and plays his part very well, Cranston is incredible , acting from the neck up must be hard !?. Minor let down imo Kidman, I just don't think this role suited her ?
Anyway if you haven't seen the original you might like this ? if you have seen the original please don't just assume remakes are crap, it's the same ;beautiful , emotional and at times funny story well played but in English instead of French, ignore the snob/negative reviews and make your own mind up, underrated imo 7.1/10 - DirectorAdam McKayStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsSteve CarellThe story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that are still felt today.A fantastic cast and a creative / unconventional delivery of an educational history lesson that makes American politics seem interesting for a change, there are lots of real clips of important historical events as well as some peculiar clips. There could have been more consistency in how they satirised significant pieces of history but the great performances make up for those minor shortcomings. Bale is doing what he does best , giving 110% or maybe 125% ? to his role, and Amy Adams , Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell are all in top form too. looking forward to more Adam McKay films , that's for sure , anyway imo 7.5/10
- DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyBruce WillisSamuel L. JacksonSecurity guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities.second viewing of Glass. It's not really a superhero movie and with an estimated budget of £300 000 000 less than Infinity war it doesn't look like one either. This is a serendipitous part 3 of a trilogy that was only conceived during the making of Split and for me its more of a sequel to that than Unbreakable but then hidden links are revealed to fully justify it as a proper trilogy. Glass and Dunn's Unbreakable characters are very much secondary to Kevin Wendel Crumb's multiple 'Split' personalities , James McAvoy really does steel the limelight so brilliantly , he should be getting 20 pay cheques for his performance. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson have fairly laid back roles as hero and villain for the majority of the film and only really come out of their shells near the end of the movie and what an ending it is ! It was nice to see Joseph Dunn being played by the grown up Spencer T Clark and also returning from Unbreakable is Charlayne Woodard as Elijah's mother , although I wasn't impressed with her makeup, not very convincing imo. A surprise returning character from Split is Casey the girl who got away from 'The Beast' her role could have been deepened imo. It's getting difficult to say much more without spoilers so I will leave it there , only other thing i should add is the musical score is quite good , it is an understated superhero tune if ever there was one and again more linked to Split which was also composed by West Dylan Thordson, anyway on second viewing my rating has only dropped from 77 to 74/100, probably because I picked up on more flaws etcetterra .
- DirectorJosie RourkeStarsSaoirse RonanMargot RobbieJack LowdenMary Stuart's (Saoirse Ronan's) attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), Queen of England, finds her condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution.A history lesson of sorts ? lots of people will argue(moan) about it's historical accuracy, maybe the Queens never met?, who is alive today to prove it ? history gets rewritten quite often and this film is no exception, ok there may be a bit more diversity in this film too, but sure there must have been a hint of some of these possibilities ?
Anyway performance wise it is a really good movie in spite of my reservations about the leading ladies, Saoirse Ronan more than makes up for her lack of height with a commanding presence and Margot Robbie does well to hide her natural beauty under a trowel load of makeup. Great costumes, sets and an almost convincing drama. imo 71/100 for the film and B- for the history lesson - DirectorMarielle HellerStarsMelissa McCarthyRichard E. GrantDolly WellsWhen Lee Israel falls out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception.the 9th biography of the year so far , An interesting story about a writer who falls on hard times due to writers block and turns her creative abilities to a life of crime writing fake letters by famous people . Melissa McCarthy plays the straight role of the author Lee Israel really well and then when she meets up with Jack played equally well by Rich E Grant things get even better and amusing too. Jack is an alcoholic homeless gay man and becomes Lee's friend and aides and abets her criminal activities when she is identified as a possible fraudster. The great performances from McCarthy and Grant elevate this above the average of recent biographies and help make it very watchable. imo7.5/10
- DirectorSean AndersStarsMark WahlbergRose ByrneIsabela MercedA couple find themselves in over their heads when they foster three children.a drama / comedy with Mark Wahlberg so you can guess what it will be like ? "inspired" on a true story so not really a biography, although there are pictures of similar real people shown in the end credits. TBH I didn't find it very funny, although there were people at the back of the auditorium laughing quite often so maybe it is funny but I wasn't in the mood for it ? there are some touching moments due to the subject matter of children in the fostering system but these were fairly predictable, expected and not new. Good performances from the kids helped, but it's a long film, clocking in at 115 minutes and I did look at my watch a few times !?. anyway imo 6/10
- DirectorCharles Martin SmithStarsAshley JuddJonah Hauer-KingEdward James OlmosA female dog travels four hundred miles in search of her owner throughout a Colorado wilderness.A cute family adventure film ? it is fairly predictable stuff and nonsense. There are several touching moments and some quite sad too. Some of the sad moments though are the bad CGI which is a bit jarring at times. Lovely landscapes make up for some of the bad CGI but this really is nothing new and you might think you have seen it all before, maybe from the Disney live action stable?, unfortunately the cliches were too much for me, maybe because i am a cat person rather than a dog lover ? imo 5.7/10
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodPatrick L. ReyesCesar De LeónA ninety-year-old horticulturist and Korean War veteran turns drug mule for a Mexican cartel.Another "inspired" from a true story rather than actual biography but it is one where you believe it is true and sort of want it to be true too.
Clint plays the part of a 90 year old horticulturalist very well for someone who is only 88. Clint's brilliant performance as Earl is well supported by Bradley Cooper , Michael Pena and Dianne Wiest to name but a few. The back story of Earl is a man who lived for his work and flowers rather than his family and he turns to crime when he falls on hard times. Whilst running drugs for the cartel he starts to reconnect with his family but is it a case of too little too late ? The original story by Sam Dolnick was published in the New York Times magazine but seems to have been fairly well adapted/written by Nick Schenk who collaborated with Eastwood on Gran Torino. Although a good movie I didn't think it had quite the same gravitas as Gran Torino. imo 73/100 - DirectorJames WanStarsJason MomoaAmber HeardWillem DafoeArthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land.
- DirectorFelix van GroeningenStarsSteve CarellMaura TierneyJack Dylan GrazerBased on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.I was moved to tears on several occasions during the film, maybe because I am a parent ? I loved most of the songs too which I felt balanced the sadness in places and enhanced the emotions in others , I especially liked the titular song by John Lennon and Gorecki's symphony no.3 . Steve Carell cant seem to do wrong in recent films imo , Timothee Chalamet is establishing himself as a great actor to keep an eye on. It is a tough subject matter , drug addiction and the family struggles that go with it, shown in dual perspective , father and son, after all it is based on a combination of both of their books, not an easy watch I would say, but a worthwhile watch if you can take it . 82/100 and on second viewing too
- DirectorPeter SegalStarsJennifer LopezVanessa HudgensLeah ReminiA big-box store worker reinvents her life and her life-story and shows Madison Avenue what street smarts can do.As you might expect, its not very original story wise also making very predictable and only has mediocre performances. 54/100
- DirectorAdam RobitelStarsTaylor RussellLogan MillerJay EllisSix strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive.
- DirectorDean DeBloisStarsJay BaruchelAmerica FerreraF. Murray AbrahamWhen Hiccup discovers Toothless isn't the only Night Fury, he must seek the Hidden World, a secret Dragon Utopia before a hired tyrant named Grimmel finds it first.
- DirectorPeter FarrellyStarsViggo MortensenMahershala AliLinda CardelliniA working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver for an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.a really good biographical drama with lots of humour and great music too, set in 1962 this breaks down albeit limited and sophisticatedly a racial divide between an unlikely pairing, if not the wider population of southern USA Great performances add to an incredible story
- DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsRosa SalazarChristoph WaltzJennifer ConnellyA deactivated cyborg's revived, but can't remember anything of her past and goes on a quest to find out who she is.wow ! an action packed big budget sci fi future adventure that reminded me of Rollerball and Elysium but with a more likeable lead character, the special effects and 3D visuals were amazing ! so I do recommend 3D or iMax. The film runs at a good pace throughout so don't blink too often, a simple enough story but plenty of scope to develop the characters more in the inevitable sequels ?. Along with the incredible CGI there's a host of great actors including MoM Mahershala Ali, Christoph Waltz and Jennifer Connelly , all putting in top notch performances. It has a 12a rating but I thought maybe not suitable for young kids. Anyway, good enough for a second viewing next week , imo 815/1000
- DirectorMike MitchellStarsChris PrattElizabeth BanksWill ArnettIt's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing the huge new threat of Lego Duplo, invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.
- DirectorBarry JenkinsStarsKiKi LayneStephan JamesRegina KingA young woman embraces her pregnancy while she and her family set out to prove her childhood friend and lover innocent of a crime he didn't commit.

- DirectorMimi LederStarsFelicity JonesArmie HammerJustin TherouxThe true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights, and the early cases of a historic career that lead to her nomination and confirmation as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.
- DirectorJames KentStarsKeira KnightleyNed WillsPandora ColinPost World War II, a British colonel and his wife are assigned to live in Hamburg during the post-war reconstruction, but tensions arise with the German who previously owned the house.
- DirectorLavinia Scott-QuinnStarsAdele JamesFiona WhitelawJack Brett AndersonLucy and her Autistic daughter Katy are under siege from a street gang. The gang leader Rabbit wants to make them feel as low as he has been made to feel; as he fights a war against himself and the world around him.
- DirectorElizabeth ChomkoStarsHilary SwankMichael ShannonRobert ForsterBridget returns home at her brother's urging to deal with her ailing mother and her father's reluctance to let go of their life together.
- DirectorLee CroninStarsSeána KerslakeJames Quinn MarkeyKati OutinenA single mother living in the Irish countryside with her son begins to suspect he may not be her son at all, and fears his increasingly disturbing behavior is linked to a mysterious sinkhole in the forest behind their house.a creepy horror film that gave me goose bumps, it's not exactly original but it is well done.
- DirectorAnna BodenRyan FleckStarsBrie LarsonSamuel L. JacksonBen MendelsohnCarol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. The auditorium was freezing cold so we really needed Brie Larson to warm us up and she was hot. Here's something you haven't heard me say before - "an underrated Marvel film !! " I loved the humour, especially the Flurking Cat ,
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsClaire FoyBeau GadsdonSverrir GudnasonYoung computer hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist find themselves caught in a web of spies, cybercriminals and corrupt government officials.
- DirectorSara ColangeloStarsMaggie GyllenhaalGael García BernalAto Blankson-WoodA kindergarten teacher in New York becomes obsessed with one of her students who she believes is a child prodigy.
- DirectorAli AbbasiStarsEva MelanderEero MilonoffJörgen ThorssonA customs officer who can smell fear develops an unusual attraction to a strange traveler while aiding a police investigation which will call into question her entire existence.
- DirectorChris FogginStarsJames PurefoyMeadow NobregaDavid HaymanTen fisherman from Cornwall are signed by Universal Records and achieve a top ten hit with their debut album, "Sea Shanties."a feel good true story about folk singers who had a top selling album. Well worth a look, it has humour , some nice old shanty songs and bit of romance all set in the loveliest part of the world , Cornwall.
- DirectorAsghar FarhadiStarsPenélope CruzJavier BardemRicardo DarínLaura, a Spanish woman living in Buenos Aires, returns to her hometown outside Madrid with her two children to attend her sister's wedding. However, the trip is upset by unexpected events that bring secrets into the open.A gripping family drama where a kidnapping reveals past events thought to be secrets Bardem and Cruz have your attention throughout , great performances
- DirectorPeter HedgesStarsJulia RobertsLucas HedgesCourtney B. VanceA drug addicted teenage boy shows up unexpectedly at his family's home on Christmas Eve.
- DirectorJessica HynesStarsJessica HynesRhona MitraShaun ParkesDetermined to ditch the dysfunction and beat her inner demons, Tina puts on fighting gloves: stepping into the boxing ring to punch up her self-worthA Jessica Hynes film The Fight, a family drama that is more than it first appears, there are lots of fights but not in the ring, well worth a look imo. (don't be put off by the credit for Russel Brand, he's not actually in it apart from a minor voice over)
- DirectorNicholas McCarthyStarsTaylor SchillingJackson Robert ScottPeter MooneyA mother concerned about her young son's disturbing behavior thinks something supernatural may be affecting him.The Prodigy is also a family drama come thriller/horror about a problem child, what is wrong with Miles ? not bad as horror goes these days, a few good chills but also not very original either.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsLupita Nyong'oWinston DukeElisabeth MossAdelaide Wilson and her family are attacked by mysterious figures dressed in red. Upon closer inspection, the Wilsons realize that the intruders are exact lookalikes of them.hoping for wow but only saw woe. what was the point of it all ? and all the other silly plot holes and general stupidity with try hard style !, even the unintentional funny parts were just woeful. Add in the terrible acting, all the stupid dialogue and the obvious ending and it is just one big disappointment, The film started well, setting the scene / history etc but when things started to happen it just became annoying (Duke's bad acting spoilt things a lot too) and that made the rest of the film less interesting for me. If I need to know biblical references (J 11:11) that doesn't help me either, I do like metaphorical movies but this one was too mixed up for me. Then the predictable ending just seemed like a lazy conclusion ? I am sure this will be an enjoyable film for a lot of people it is thought provoking but maybe just in a bad way for some ? worst film of the year so far by a long way. 4/10 is me being generous
- DirectorJonah HillStarsSunny SuljicKatherine WaterstonLucas HedgesFollows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 1990s-era Los Angeles who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.
- DirectorJustin BaldoniStarsHaley Lu RichardsonCole SprouseMoises AriasA pair of teenagers with cystic fibrosis meet in a hospital and fall in love, though their disease means they must avoid close physical contact.
- DirectorDavid F. SandbergStarsZachary LeviMark StrongAsher AngelA newly fostered young boy in search of his mother instead finds unexpected super powers and soon gains a powerful enemy.Shazam! , wow what a lot of fun this is , Marvel should take note, their films are so OTT in comparison , so many films take themselves too seriously so it was nice to see this as a parody of the "super" genre - imo 8.1/10
- DirectorKevin KölschDennis WidmyerStarsJason ClarkeAmy SeimetzJohn LithgowDr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home.Another unnecessary remake ? well although I don't remember the original very well I am sure this re-imagining is better, nice and creepy with a few good actors in Jason Clarke and John Lithgow but the star performance for me was Jeté Laurence, one to watch out for in the future imo. 6.8/10,
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsColin FarrellMichael KeatonDanny DeVitoA young elephant, whose oversized ears enable him to fly, helps save a struggling circus, but when the circus plans a new venture, Dumbo and his friends discover dark secrets beneath its shiny veneer.a movie that could have been a disaster but thankfully it is a really beautiful re-imagining, a whole new story cleverly wrapped around the majority of the elements from the original animation, it was a bit dusty in my eyes on several occasions which for me is a good sign that the film has a heart, imo 8.2/10 and straight up into my top 10 of the year so far, a must see imo
- DirectorBo BurnhamStarsElsie FisherJosh HamiltonEmily RobinsonAn introverted teenage girl tries to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth grade year before leaving to start high school.A film about a 13 year old school girl in the last week of Eighth Grade, a surprisingly emotional and authentic portrayal ? it certainly lacked a lot of the usual American school clichés. I couldn't help but be moved by Elsie Fisher's incredible performance of an awkward media age girl, full of angst , self loathing but some hope for the future. I rarely relate to US coming of age films but somehow as a father of daughters , this touched me more than I was comfortable with. Maybe the mixed reviews show this might not be for everyone , imo 7.4/10,
- DirectorChris ButlerStarsHugh JackmanDavid WalliamsStephen FryMr. Link recruits explorer Sir Lionel Frost to help find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, this trio of explorers travel the world to help their new friend. There's nothing missing here, lots of fun, great animation and some big name voices too. I must admit I do like Laika films more and more with each new release this has the magic combination of adult humour hidden amongst the child friendly visual stuff, I highly recommend it for all ages, imo 7.35/10
- DirectorDylan BrownStarsSofia MaliJennifer GarnerKen Hudson CampbellThe imagination of a wildly creative girl comes alive in an amusement park.Wonder Park is an amusing animation fantasy very manic and almost hits the spot with an interesting story but it lost me when an element was just skimped over for more manic goings on, maybe an adult theme too much for the little ones ?. Lots of crisp and creative animation and some loveable characters but it just felt like there was a big hole that needed to be filled. anyway imo 5.4/10 one just for the kids ?
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsDavid HarbourMilla JovovichIan McShaneCaught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, Hellboy battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.Yet another reboot of a recent film / comic book character ! Ok , hmmm , This story is very different to original of the 2005 film ,both have the Nazi link but then it is about 90% new, although it has a lot of amusing gags and fun characters it seems to be trying too hard to encompass so many legendary fantasies of English folklore, including King Arthur , giants, ghouls and fairies etc, i almost expected some BFG, gizzardgupler or fleshlumpeater dialogue, anyway it is entertaining in the main but maybe needed a less contrived story ? David Harbor plays Hellboy really well and gets good support from Ian McShane and Sasha Lane (American Honey) ,with mostly good special effects and some gory killings it might not be to everyones taste, imo 6.1/10
- DirectorTom HarperStarsJessie BuckleyMatt CostelloJane PattersonA troubled young Glaswegian woman dreams of becoming a Nashville country star.a drama about a country singer from Glasgow who has dreams of making it big in Nashville Tennessee. After being released from prison her hopes are not dashed and her children don't seem to be her top priority. It takes a while to realise what is important in life and that what you really want might be closer to home. Good performances from Jessie Buckley and Julie Walters elevate this above the norm of home grown talent films, Even the music wasn't bad (I am not a fan of country music) but if you are a fan it will no doubt be a further benefit , anyway imo 7.4/10
- DirectorTina GordonStarsRegina HallIssa RaeMarsai MartinA woman is transformed into her younger self at a point in her life when the pressures of adulthood become too much to bear.Once you get over the fact that Tom Hanks was in Big 30 years ago you can settle down and try to sleep through this multi reversal retelling of the basic switch story. Big is brilliant Little is not, the other differences;, it's a female switch, from old to young and now black instead of white ,not magic Zoltan but donut truck girl. Regina Hall is awfully annoying ,but that's probably just the ott character ? Marsai Marting on the other hand is almost likeable and looks like a talent for the future. The rest of the cast were fairly forgettable. I didn't really find any of this film funny enough to laugh but i did cringe a lot. Sadly this is too much of a chick flick for me hence imo only 5/10
- DirectorTrevor NunnStarsJudi DenchSophie CooksonStephen Campbell MooreThe story of Joan Stanley, who was exposed as the K.G.B.'s longest-serving British spy.An interesting "inspired" biography about a significant English spy who gave A-bomb secrets to the Russians, apparently known as the granny spy because she wasn't discovered until she was in her 90s. imo 7,1/10
- DirectorNeil JordanStarsIsabelle HuppertChloë Grace MoretzMaika MonroeA young woman befriends a lonely widow who's harboring a dark and deadly agenda toward her.A creepy stalker thriller with the lovely Chloe Grace Moretz . we all need a good friend right ? but one with a dark secret and crazy sense of humour ? imo 6.7/10
- DirectorMichael ChavesStarsLinda CardelliniRaymond CruzPatricia VelasquezIgnoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. In the conjuring universe, apparently , anyway it's a proper horror film complete with an ugly malevolent ghost in a wedding dress, a crazy ex priest with a good sense of humour and plenty of jump scares and creepy goosebumping moments. imo 6.3/10 (well above average for a horror film )
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe. So slow, boring and emotionless, there were a few entertaining moments but not enough for me, looking at the ratings I wonder what other people saw!? Looks likely to be the most overrated film of all time. I think I must have seen a different film though because imo it is so overrated ! Slow and devoid of emotion? 170 minutes that seemed like 270 minutes, anyway imo 5.5/10 for the fun parts, just not enough of them
- DirectorDome KarukoskiStarsNicholas HoultLily CollinsColm MeaneyTolkien's novels were inspired by his mom's storytelling, falling in love with another orphan, Edith, forming a brotherhood with 3 other misfits at school, the trench war of WWI and later telling stories to his own kids. One of the best biographies of the year (there have been quite a few too), Obviously I am biased because the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies are amongst my favourite films of all time and this film can be seen very much as an accompanying movie because there are obviously so many references to those stories and how they evolved during Tolkien's early life. The cast is superb too, Nicholas Hoult is becoming one of my favourite young actors and Lily Collins puts in a great performance too but no one stood out as a bad performance. There are at times some great pieces of cinematography and the sympathetic score by Thomas Newman is one of his best for a while too. Although I did know some of the history behind LotR/ The Hobbit /Tolkien , this really pulls it all together so well, with his formation of friendships of love and the artist creativity that became legendary and inspirational to so many. The scenes of the trenches during the first world war are very evocative echoing what would be become battles in middle earth years later. I now feel I need to have a marathon re-watch of the epic trilogies. 8.5/10
- DirectorJonathan LevineStarsCharlize TheronSeth RogenJune Diane RaphaelJournalist, Fred Flarsky, reunites with his childhood crush, Charlotte Field; now one of the most influential women in the world. As she prepares to run for president, Charlotte hires Fred as her speechwriter, and sparks fly.Not your usual political RomCom, ok it is literally a long shot to believe it at times but there is so much truth too, I love a good mocking of a dumb puppet president and we know that's always an easy target. As with a lot of comedy films these days the humour can be too broad for some and this is borderline acceptable to me, fortunately it doesn't step over the line in terms of visual crudeness. Charlize Thereon is such a good actress there's nothing she can't do imo but I hope she doesn't do too many like this. You know what you are going to get with Seth Rogen so no real surprises here apart from how well he works with Charlize, he seems to raise his game to keep up with her maybe ? the supporting cast are also good and there's a nice baddy in Mr Wembly (almost Les Patterson?) who I struggled to recognise under his make up, but we rarely see the real man anyway. The film has some charm and made me smile even though a lot of U.S. references went over my head, Charlize Theron is always worth going to see. imo 6.8/10
- DirectorOlivia WildeStarsKaitlyn DeverBeanie FeldsteinJessica WilliamsOn the eve of their high-school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.A bit of a cringefest for me , I know I am not the target audience but I didn't hear anyone else laughing either. Although this didn't have some of the usual high school themes it maybe tried to be too inclusive ? The lead characters were not nerdy enough and some of their dialogue was unusually broad humoured and laboured too. Deliberate use of continuity goofs added a bit to its oddball delivery but otherwise it was a drag. 5.1/10
- DirectorBrian WelshStarsCristian OrtegaLorn MacdonaldLaura FraserTwo teenage boys in Scotland in 1994, best friends with no control over their lives, risk everything to attend an illegal rave, hoping for the best night of their boring lives. This is Scotland's Mid90s and tbh i had a better connection with this compared to the American film. Although it is about the rave culture and the music there wasn't as much music as i would have expected and liked. It's a gritty buddy film shot in black and white (apart from the rave segment) although i don't suppose it would have been very different in colour, Scotland's run down areas look grey anyway . A big night out of 2 15/16 year old best friends about to go their separate ways, neither have a perfect home life but they are an odd couple, a radical test of their friendship doing things for the first and last time together. When the music was on i couldn't help but tap my feet and nod my head , not that i was involved in the rave scene of the 90s , i just liked the music.
- DirectorGail MancusoStarsJosh GadDennis QuaidKathryn PrescottA dog finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he meets.A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey. The many lives of a dog and the emotional connection to one family. The whole saga spans about 60 years with various dog breeds but the same spirit of the first dog reincarnated. It is of course mostly a feel good adventure for the dogs but the lives of the people are a bit more complicated. You will get emotional is a given going in for these sort of films so no real surprises in these predictable tales. Charming and heartwarming but I think you need to love dogs ?and people too ? lol , imo 6.8/10 and 6.6/10
- DirectorRob LettermanStarsRyan ReynoldsJustice SmithKathryn NewtonIn a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective.I almost didn't bother to go see this because i just thought Pokemon ! really !? not that i know anything about Pokemon other than i thought it was a card trading game. Anyhoo, Ryan Reynolds is the voice of Pikachu and it's rated PG so i thought why not, surprisingly funny in a crazy kind of way and very entertaining in spite of being a bit manic and silly too. i noticed it was filmed in various locations including the UK / London, although with $150 mil. of CGi enhancements. The kids will love the pokemon and the adults will love the humour /(mostly?) imo 6.9/10
- DirectorChris AddisonStarsAnne HathawayRebel WilsonAlex SharpTwo con women - one low rent and the other high class - team up to take down the men who have wronged them.A reboot and suit of dirty rotten scoundrels ! swap out the great Michael Caine and Steve Martin (in his good days) and replace with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson ! what could possibly go wrong ? Unfortunately most of the jokes went wrong , i guess the con here is on us !? I assume Hathaway will now do anything for a fat pay cheque and to get to wear some ridiculous outfits, Rebel is lucky to get a pay cheque ! ? i suppose Melissa McCarthy was busy when this one came up or has gained a bit of integrity ? 4.3/10
- DirectorChad StahelskiStarsKeanu ReevesHalle BerryIan McShaneJohn Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassins' guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head, he is the target of hit men and women everywhere.Must Love Dogs 3, only kidding, John Wick 3 - Parabellum, I took my kill counter with me but it only went up to 99, doh ! More great action from the super assassin and his friends, more dogs, more guns, more bullets, more sharp implements and more dead bodies, more great fun imo 7.5/10 in spite of a disappointing ending
- DirectorRoxann DawsonStarsMarcel RuizTopher GraceSarah ConstibleWhen her 14-year-old son drowns in a lake, a faithful mother prays for him to come back from the brink of death and be healed.A case of going to the cinema for a Sunday afternoon tv movie , I didn't know what to expect but I hoped for something better. Chrissy Metz and Marcel Ruiz put in good performances as the mother and son but tbh the rest of the cast were average to subpar imo. Maybe because I don't believe in miracles didn't help me get too connected but the support of the community was heartwarming and moving.
