Favorite Independent Film of the 50s and 60s
The most often used definition of an "independent film" is “any film made outside the Hollywood studio system,” with considerations made for such things as budget, source of funds, and distribution. That definition has blurred considerably over the decades, though, and, according to Indie Wire, "you could find any number of films that move fluidly between 'studio' and 'indie' when it comes to one or more of those aspects."
