10/10
Hitchcock's greatest film and, thankfully, his most popular as well, gathering a well-deserved status along critics and regular movie lovers alike.
The "Master of Suspense" ostensibly was just aiming for a black-and-white thriller with an exploitation feel to it, but with some great twists (that resonate throughout the whole film)... and he got just that and even more, i might say.
It also stands up for multiple viewings: the first being the greatest since you have no idea what's in store for you (and i don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the film but is reading this, which is highly improbable but, oh well !), the second, third, fourth and so on viewings provide the notice of different references and themes (which are most certainly missed on the first since it's so captivating, at least for me) like the bird references, the marvelous use of shadows and shades throughout the picture, the black humor in witty lines that "Mother's not herself today" and, of course, the association with fears.
The performances are extremely good, with Anthony Perkins playing Norma Bates - the most important role of his career which happens to be very complex and requires a great actor but Perkins more than pulls it off, along with Janet Leigh as the attractive, unlucky and conspicuous Marion Crane that runs off with $40.000 cash in order to start a new life with her lover played by John Gavin, Vera Miles (that also stars in another very good, highly underrated Hitchcock picture - The Wrong Man) as her worried sister and one of my personal favorites, Martin Balsam as Detective Arbogast, a role which fits him like a glove in my opinion.
Hitchcock created a masterpiece that explores fears, schizophrenia and madness while delivering top-notch suspense that captivates the viewer and makes the experience extremely engaging. That's what I call a truly great film.
