- DirectorWilliam DieterleStarsEdward ArnoldWalter HustonJane DarwellA nineteenth-century New Hampshire farmer makes a pact with Satan for economic success, then enlists famed orator Daniel Webster to extract him from his contract.Originally titled "All That Money Can Buy", this film contains a first-class performance by Walter Huston as "Mr. Scratch". I highly recommend this film as a starting point for following The Devil through film and TV.
- CreatorEthan ReiffCyrus VorisStarsPeter HortonJohn GloverLori PettyA dead cop, sentenced to Hell, is returned to Earth by the Devil to recover 113 escaped evil spirits. This TV series only lasted one season (which I am sorry for, because its premise is a lot better than most supernatural TV series), but John Glover's performance as The Devil gave me a pleasing chill in the pit of my stomach, as he was both sinister and (in a twisted way) sympathetic.
- DirectorSteven Hilliard SternStarsElliott GouldBill CosbySusan AnspachMax, a dead corrupt businessman, makes a Faustian pact with Satan's henchman to drive three people to Hell in exchange for longer life. Soon Max realizes that there still may be good in him.STAY AWAY FROM THIS FILM BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE! Not even Bill Cosby's performance as The Devil could save this one! I'm sure that if you mention this one to him, he'll quickly change the subject.
- CreatorRod SerlingStarsRod SerlingRobert McCordJay OverholtsOrdinary people find themselves in extraordinarily astounding situations, which they each try to solve in a remarkable manner.During the run of the original series, there were five stories which featured The Devil: "The Howling Man" with Robin Hughes, "Escape Clause" with Thomas Gomez (as a very sleazy Devil), "A Nice Place to Visit" with Sebastian Cabot (as one of the most jovial and jolly Devils I've seen), "Of Late I Think of Cliffordville" with Julie Newmar (the first, as far as I know, female Devil), and "Printer's Devil" with Burgess Meredith (perfect casting!).
- CreatorGene LevittStarsRicardo MontalbanHervé VillechaizeWendy SchaalThe mysterious Mr. Roarke runs a unique resort island in the Pacific Ocean that can fulfill any fantasy, but they rarely turn out as expected.Roddy McDowell was an interesting choice to play The Devil in two episodes of this series; since I've always enjoyed his performances, I'd personally like to go back and check them out myself
- CreatorMichael LandonStarsMichael LandonVictor FrenchJames TroeshA probationary angel, sent back to Earth, teams with an ex-cop to help people.Michael Berryman played a somewhate (in my view) ridiculous-looking Devil in two episodes of this series (he had more of a role in the episode "The Devil and Jonathan Smith" and barely an appearance in th succeeeding "I Was A Middle-Aged Werewolf") and played the part a bit over-the-top.
- DirectorJames AlgarSamuel ArmstrongFord Beebe Jr.StarsLeopold StokowskiDeems TaylorThe Philadelphia OrchestraA series of eight famous pieces of classical music, conducted by Leopold Stokowski and interpreted in animation by Walt Disney's team of artists. For a more powerful and ominous portrayal of The Devil, trust Walt Disney to come up with it! "Chernabog", the Lord of Evil and Death in the animation of Modeste Mussorgsky's NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN, exudes evil with every gesture and every facial expression without a single word of dialogue!
- CreatorTara ButtersMichele FazekasStarsBret HarrisonTyler LabineRick GonzalezOn his 21st birthday, Sam discovers his parents sold his soul to the devil before birth and he must now be a bounty hunter for the devil until he dies.Ray Wise, who did a fantastic job as Leland Palmer in TWIN PEAKS, it seems to me did quite a bit of scenery-chewing in his portrayal of The Devil in this series.
- DirectorSutton RoleyStarsKim NovakDoug McClureAlejandro ReyA US coast guard finds only a woman still alive aboard a shipwreck. She tells her rescuer what happened and soon, they find themselves trapped in a mysterious part of the ocean known as Satan's Triangle.Without giving too much away, this made-for-TV film shows that The Devil's Triangle in the Caribbean is appropriately named because its namesake plays a large part in it. The twists towards the film's end are a shocker indeed! If you can, find a copy of it!
- DirectorSteven BrillStarsAdam SandlerPatricia ArquetteHarvey KeitelAfter two of the devil's three sons escape Hell to wreak havoc on Earth, the devil must send his third son, the mild-mannered Nicky, to bring them back before it's too late.Another one to stay away from! Rodney Dangerfield as The Devil? PLEASE!
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsWillem DafoeHarvey KeitelBarbara HersheyThe life of Jesus Christ, his journey through life as he faces the struggles all humans do, and his final temptation on the cross. This was one of the more interesting interpretations of The Devil that I can remember...The Devil appears at the Crucifixion in the form of a little girl (played by Juliette Caton) but later transformes into Leo Marks when the Temptaption fails. Hmmm....
- DirectorArchie MayoStarsPaul MuniAnne BaxterClaude RainsThe Devil arranges for a deceased gangster to return to Earth as a well-respected judge to make up for his previous life.Claude Rains as "Nick" makes a very suave, smooth Prince of Darkness!
- DirectorIrwin AllenStarsRonald ColmanHedy LamarrGroucho MarxThe Devil and the Spirit of Man argue as to whether or not humanity is ultimately good or evil.Vincent Price in a frock coat and with a goatee is a natural and a wonderful bit of casting!
- DirectorErnst LubitschStarsGene TierneyDon AmecheCharles CoburnAn old roué arrives in Hades to review his life with Satan, who will rule on his eligibility to enter the Underworld. Why is is that The Devil pre-1960's is always so smooth, suave and much more delightful? Was it the scripts or the actors? Whatever, Laird Cregar as "His Excellency" is another wonderful addition to the list of actors to play The Prince of Darkness.
- DirectorCy EndfieldStarsEdward ArnoldStephen McNallyEsther WilliamsIn this wartime MGM short, the Devil makes mischief with the U.S. economy. It's 5 months since the U.S. entered World War II and Adolf Hitler telephones the Devil for his help. No problem, says the Devil, he will get Americans to buy on credit, break rationing laws, hoard as much as they can and cash in their war bonds. It includes a clip from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt asking people to buy bonds and act in the best interest of the country.I spotted this short film on TCM and immediately recognized the actor playing The Devil as Edward Arnold, who played "Mr. Kirby" so well in the 1930 YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, and he does just as a fantastic job in this short about how The Devil is delighted that Inflation is on the rise.
- DirectorBlake EdwardsStarsEllen BarkinJimmy SmitsJoBeth WilliamsA sexist womanizer is killed by one of his former lovers and then reincarnated as a woman. Not exactly one of Blake Edward's best films, but it has a very interesting premise and Bruce Payne as The Devil give the part a very ionteresting twist.
- DirectorMark Steven JohnsonStarsNicolas CageEva MendesSam ElliottWhen motorcycle rider Johnny Blaze sells his soul to the Devil to save his father's life, he is transformed into the Ghost Rider, the Devil's own bounty hunter, and is sent to hunt down sinners.Peter Fonda in this film is one of the most smooth, suave but also chilling Devils I've ever seen.
- DirectorMark NeveldineBrian TaylorStarsNicolas CageCiarán HindsIdris ElbaJohnny Blaze, tortured by the Ghost Rider's curse, gets a chance of redemption through protecting the Devil's son, whose father is pursuing him.Unfortunately, Ciaran Hinds (this time the character is called "Roarke") does not do as well a job as Peter Fonda did.
- DirectorStanley DonenStarsPeter CookDudley MooreEleanor BronA hapless loser sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for seven wishes, but has trouble winning over the girl of his dreams.
- DirectorHarold RamisStarsBrendan FraserElizabeth HurleyFrances O'ConnorHopeless dweeb Elliot Richards is granted seven wishes by the Devil to snare Allison, the girl of his dreams, in exchange for his soul.In this remake, Elizabeth Hurley takes on The Devil's horns.
- DirectorTaylor HackfordStarsKeanu ReevesAl PacinoCharlize TheronAn exceptionally-adept Florida lawyer is offered a job at a high-end New York City law firm with a high-end boss--the biggest opportunity of his career to date.I can't really say muich abot the film itself, but Al Pacino as The Devil is one of those inspired choices.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsJack NicholsonCherSusan SarandonThree single women in a picturesque village have their wishes granted, at a cost, when a mysterious and flamboyant man arrives in their lives.Anopther bit of inspired casting, this time with Jack Nicholson (even though his charcater isn't referred to as being The Devil).
- DirectorGordon DouglasStarsAlan MowbrayBobby WatsonGeorge E. StoneAdolf Hitler, Benito and Suki Yaki are placed in a series of Three Stooges routines, with the premise that the Board of Directors of Hell has put the Devil on notice and they intend to replace him with Adolf Hitler unless he can get Hitler to commit a good deed. The devil has his work cut out for him, and doesn't appear likely to escape being replaced by the German leader. This is a definitely cute short film from WWII where The Devil (Alan Mowbray) takes on Hitler; interesting to see The Devil as a "goodie" here going up against a "baddie" (if only to save his job!).
