- DirectorAdrian LyneStarsJennifer BealsMichael NouriLilia SkalaAn 18-year-old female amateur dancer who performs nightly at a dancing bar, and works as a welder during the day, dreams of joining the Pittsburgh ballet school.Starting off with this, the most sophisticated in the genre. Even though it was pretty unreal having a breakdance crew dancing in Pittsburgh, you had to agree that the Rock Steady crew who dance in the movie were tight.
- DirectorCharlie AhearnStarsLee QuiñonesLady PinkFab 5 FreddySouth Bronx graffiti artist Zoro is commissioned to paint a backdrop for a hip-hop concert.A classic, this just put you in the middle of it. It was a half drama and half documentary (a docudrama?) where you could be in the South Bronx without getting robbed.
- DirectorJoel SilbergStarsLucinda DickeyAdolfo QuinonesMichael ChambersA struggling young jazz dancer meets up with two break-dancers. Together they become the sensation of the street crowds.Amazing how they dug up the early California hip hop scene, pop locking, sliding, Ice T and all and gave a fascinating look into what was going down in La La land.
- DirectorSam FirstenbergStarsLucinda DickeyAdolfo QuinonesMichael ChambersA developer tries to bulldoze a community recreation center. The local breakdancers try to stop it.OK now, they were pushing it, but I guess they had to rush to make that $ before the break dance craze fizzled out.
- DirectorStan LathanStarsRae Dawn ChongGuy DavisJon ChardietAn aspiring DJ from the South Bronx and his best friend, a promoter, try to get into show business by exposing people to hip-hop music and the local culture. Not sure why, but though I swear by this movie, it just seemed so dreary and dramatic (besides the scenes where artists performed) to really evoke the nature of the culture. Great performances, but a depressing plot.
- DirectorKen HandlerStarsJosh MarcanoTom SierchioJim SorieroA gang of boys under the Brooklyn Bridge are united by their common interest in break dancing. Some work as pizza delivery boys, hence they call themselves the "Delivery Boys". They form a dance team and enter a local break dance contest, sponsored by a woman's panty manufacturer. A rival gang's sponsor intimidates their employer into thinking she must keep the boys working so they won't be harmed. She gives the boys some "specialized" deliveries to make them late for the contest. The antics and calamities abound as the boys wrestle with her work assignments and getting to the contest on time. This movie just epitomized hip hop. There was lots and lots of break dancing, some good, some OK, some so-so. Was light in the music too, but these were some down kids!
- DirectorWoo-Ping YuenStarsDonnie YenWoo-Ping YuenWan-Si WongA young breakdancer experiences a series of complications involving a poor opera performer he befriends, his older sister and jealous cousin, a female student, two rivals, and a lunatic. This I found out about on a blog. Its a Chinese (?) break dance movie, believe it or not, which cashed in on the craze. I have not seen it, but will look for it.
- DirectorSidney PoitierStarsJohn Scott CloughDon FranklinTamara MarkEight small-town teens travel to New York City for a one-in-a-million shot at stardom in a national dance competition.Though the emphasis was more on jazz dance, this was interesting in showing some small town ballet kids going to the big city and clashing with some local break dance crews.
- DirectorMarcelo EpsteinStarsLorenzo LamasVicki FrederickCameron DyeChilly is just a guy from the streets with a talent for break-dancing. When his wicked moves catch the eye of an industry pro, Chilly finds his dreams of fame and fortune coming true, for better or for worse. Now this is when things got really ridiculous. Lorenzo Lamas is cool and all, but he was trying really hard to pop, lock and boogalo and it was too funny. Plus, it was interesting how alot of the breakers and rappers were Italian. Who knew Italians could get down like that?
- DirectorHerbert RossStarsKevin BaconLori SingerJohn LithgowA city teenager moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace. All of a sudden, these kids who live in a small town which made dancing illegal start popping and break dancing like they were professional dancers in the final scenes of the movie. Hard to believe, but even harder to believe that this film was actually remade.
- DirectorMichael SchultzStarsTaimakVanityChristopher MurneyIn New York City, a young man searches for a Master to obtain the final level of martial arts mastery known as the Glow. There was some break dancing in here, including this routine where the hero's little brother gets out of being tied up by doing an intricate wave dance routine.
- DirectorJack Haley Jr.StarsMikhail BaryshnikovRay BolgerSammy Davis Jr.The history of dance depicted on film.A documentary thrown together which attempted to link break dancing with other dancing movies of the past, all the way back to the 40s. Good break dance routines in the beginning.
- DirectorMichael SchultzStarsSheila E.Joseph SimmonsDarryl McDanielsThe story of a man who has started a new hip-hop/rap label called Krush Groove. When the break dance craze fizzled out, this movie picked up with fully focusing on the music. I read somewhere that one of the break dancers in the movie was asked by one of the members of RUN DMC on that set "You still doing that break dance s--t"?
- DirectorJoel SilbergStarsMario Van PeeblesEriq La SalleMelvin PlowdenAn ex-con and break-dancer helps save a neighborhood from a greedy developer while trying to win a rap contest. No break dancing in this one, now it was all about the "rap" craze, and the world has never been the same!
- DirectorDorian WalkerStarsJudd NelsonJonna LeeGordon JumpA spoiled rich young man hires a young hustler, who lives in a broken car and owes money to a dicey loan shark, to take his place in his elite prep school and graduate for him.In order to show that he is "down" this "street smart" character does a break dance routine. I remember seeing a trailer for this movie before Breakin and this theater full of black and Puerto Rican guys was like "Oh, come on!" and laughing.
