1. Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.

Stars: Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey

Votes: 2,295,252

Season 7; Fall 2017

I didn't realize how far Game of Thrones would drag me in once I started watching it and I never thought any show would surpass Breaking Bad for me but Game of Thrones did and it isn't even that close anymore. George R.R. Martin's world set in the mythical land of Westeros is arguably the most unique world created by a writer. The politics of the Seven Kingdoms ruled in Kings Landing is filled with devious and cunning people. Whether your a warrior or know how to play the game there's always another danger or conqueror looming somewhere else. Each house is unique and the show creators Benioff and Weiss do a tremendous job visually showing George R.R. Martin's world on television. The common narrative for those that don't watch or think they understand the show, is that it's merely violence and sex, those people have no idea the amount of character depth and conflict the show presents. Game of Thrones has heart and pure darkness. You will lose your mind how often things go wrong and how no one is safe in this world. Valar Morghulis.

Breaking Bad is one of the most original and powerful shows to ever air. The story of Walter White and his evolution into a Meth Cooking legend can't be beat. The greatest anti-hero story of all time from his simple days as an over qualified chemistry high school teacher to being diagnosed with lung cancer, he is challenged to leave something behind for his family. He goes down a truly dark path and the events that unfold are perfectly written. Bryan Cranston's acting is paramount there is a reason he won 4 Primetime Emmy Awards. Each character's background is essential to the story Vince Gilligan and the writers define the essence of character development. Vince Gilligan has created something that all television dramas will be measured up to for the foreseeable future.

4. Dexter (2006–2013)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

He's smart. He's lovable. He's Dexter Morgan, America's favorite serial killer, who spends his days solving crimes and nights committing them.

Stars: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar

Votes: 769,641

Series is Complete

'Dexter' is a well written anti-hero story about a serial killer vigilante who only kills people who have killed others. I was skeptical about committing to this show because clearly the premise is dark; which don't get me wrong dark I love but it didn't seem to have enough to entice me to watch. I stand corrected as it has easily jumped to #3 on my list. Michael C. Hall never got the credit he deserved for tackling this role the way he did, he offers a horrifying acting technique for his character and he never fails to keep you interested in his work. Though 'Dexter' carries some flaws with other characters his boss Lieutenant LaGuerta and co-worker Angel Batista are likable characters but their development is average at best. The flashbacks with Dexter and his adopted father are remarkable as a building block for Dexter's craftiness and the code that he is meant to follow about researching your targets and knowing how to play anyone who suspects his actions. His sister Debra Morgan is another lovable character on the show and her growth into one of Miami's greatest Homicide Detectives is exciting to watch. This is a gruesome show to say the least, you should proceed with caution if you decide to watch the series.

-Favorite Character: Dexter Morgan

5. Peaky Blinders (2013–2022)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama

A gangster family epic set in 1900s England, centering on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby.

Stars: Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Helen McCrory

Votes: 652,428

Peaky Blinders may be overshadowed by it's counterparts though this may be one of the greatest television series produced by BBC. The story of the Shelby family in Birmingham England in 1919 is hard to miss out on. Aspiring towards power and control of England with the leadership of Thomas Shelby. The show has it's moments good and bad, most of the cast is terrific some members aren't as talented as you hope for their character. Though the story is enticing nonetheless and you can't help but continue to watch the madness unravel.

-Favorite Character: Thomas Shelby

The Sopranos is the greatest Mafia genre in television history and can't be beat. The in depth look into Tony Sopranos life and his struggles growing up in the Mob as a child to being the head of the family during his middle ages is exceptional. The scenes between Tony and his therapist show you that even Crimelords like Tony struggle with challenges most of us would find unbearable. Votes: 286,561

Shameless follows the dysfunctional Gallagher family with an Alcoholic father, a Bi-Polar mother who left them behind, a daughter tasked with raising her brothers and sisters, a brilliant son, a gay son, a troublemaker son, a responsible young daughter, and a toddler son who happens to be black. What makes this modern day soap opera so compelling is the depth each character has and the incredible performances from the cast to bring their characters to life. William H. Macy plays the father Frank Gallagher and to my surprise shows a side to his acting that I never thought he was capable of. The brilliant son Phillip aka Lip is my personal favorite for all the troubles he deals with and how he constantly rises to the occasion to excel in his life and learn from mistakes.

  • Favorite Character: Lip Gallagher

16. True Detective (2014– )

Stars: Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch

Votes: 659,787

Nic Pizzolato glorified as a creative genius after season 1 and castrated for an awful season 2... This has been a tricky thing to see unravel most people are fuming over the direction Nic went with the 2nd season and felt he was trying to hard to re-define the show after season one. Those who aren't familiar with True Detective, Nic Pizzolato's goal is to write a new case with a new set of characters each season. Season One had Rust Cohle and his partner Marty Hart solving a case of a murder in Louisiana the 2nd season was recast with double the characters and it was a murder mystery set in Los Angeles. To compare each season side by side is completely unfair, season one was genre defining and one of the best seasons in television history of any television show. The murder was dark and twisted and solving the case will have you clenching your fists to keep from having a massive panic attack. Season 2 gets a bad rap mainly because people unfairly compare the two seasons. It's also not perfect and didn't end particularly well but season 2 was refreshing and was still a solid season with plenty of action and nostalgia similar to the first season. There aren't many television shows to my knowledge that recast characters and set off on an entirely different story I find it refreshing in the television world and I can only hope True Detective gets another shot at success with a 3rd season.

Favorite Character Season 1: Detective Rust Cohle Favorite Character Season 2: Detective Ray Velcoro

Stars: Pedro Pascal, Wagner Moura, Boyd Holbrook, Alberto Ammann

Votes: 472,707

Narcos is a homerun for Netflix original series, I was thrilled to see the advertisements of Pablo Escobar and the DEA. The fact that a television series has been made covering the rise of Pablo Escobar's drug empire still blows my mind. The first season was so great that it jumped to #7 all time for television shows. The characters are great and seeing Padro Pascal (Game Of Thrones fan favorite who played Oberyn Martell) was a welcome sight. The culture in Columbia during that time is shown perfectly for the small screen and I cannot wait to see what the following season has to offer.

Kevin Spacey plays congressman Francis Underwood who is on a mission to ruin the lives of those who took away his shot to be something in the political world. The writing and directing of this show is incredible and the nostalgic tone set in the pilot from Director David Fincher truly created the road map for House of Cards success. The Anti-Hero is back in a big way and what better way then to follow him through the world of politics.

Votes: 253,077

Finished Season 11.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is one of the funniest television comedies of all time. What sets this chaotic story from classics such as Seinfeld or Friends is the incredibly bizarre scenarios they constantly put themselves in. Their egos are so incredibly far-fetched resulting in nothing but absurd and childish behavior. No other show can measure up to it's comedic nature.

29. Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000–2024)

Stars: Larry David, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman

Votes: 147,822

Finished the Series

Larry David shows you exactly how many comedic levels he truly has, known as the co-creator and Writer of Seinfeld he takes that genre to HBO with a much vulgar approach. Larry is truly underrated as an actor and his writing is pure genius. I'm disappointed the series hasn't gotten a green-light for one final season but where it left off is satisfying enough. Curb Your Enthusiasm should get more attention and I personally consider this the greatest comedy television show of all time.
