- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. The top of the line, the film they all copy but can't get close to.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstAlfred MolinaPeter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a former brilliant scientist named Otto Octavius.A masterpiece of film making. Story, characters, dialogue, pacing, editing, music, acting, everything is done faultlessly, no scene is too long, too short or extraneous. Bravo.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris HemsworthMark RuffaloThe Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe. After Civil Bore, bland and poorly written, I really didn't expect the writers to pull this off (they wrote Thor 2 as well). But like a broken clock, they somehow did, in one of the flukiest occurrences in film. It's similar to the 1st Avengers in that it just feels perfect. Every character done justice, the pacing dialogue, it's as good as it could've been. A good balance of humour, colourful action scenes and some heart interspersed, it all made a 2 hour and 20 minute film flow quite nicely. Credit where credit's due.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.Joss Whedon's career consists of a continuous cycle; come out of nowhere and crush it with a game changer, become oversaturated and lose your lustre, disappear and repeat. The Avengers came out of nowhere and had a script that did every character justice. Rare to see that in ensemble films. The scope and success of the MCU can be attributed to Whedon's triumph here, paving the way.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonSamuel L. JacksonHolly HunterWhile trying to lead a quiet suburban life, a family of undercover superheroes are forced into action to save the world.Pixar's greatest achievement.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanHalle BerryWhen anti-mutant Colonel William Stryker kidnaps Professor X and attacks his school, the X-Men must ally with their archenemy Magneto to stop him.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days.Even alluding to what I want to say in its favour could be construed as a spoiler.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them.
- DirectorFrank MillerQuentin TarantinoRobert RodriguezStarsMickey RourkeClive OwenBruce WillisAn exploration of the dark and miserable Basin City and three of its residents, all of whom are caught up in violent corruption.
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Guy PearceGwyneth PaltrowWhen Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.Like TDKR, I've only seen it once, so I do need to see it again.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleTom HardyAnne HathawayEight years after the Joker's reign of chaos, Batman is coerced out of exile with the assistance of the mysterious Selina Kyle in order to defend Gotham City from the vicious guerrilla terrorist Bane.Plot holes galore but I still couldn't dismiss it entirely as many others have. I've only seen it once; a rewatch should solidify my opinion.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsGerard ButlerLena HeadeyDavid WenhamIn the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. They face insurmountable odds when they are betrayed by a Spartan reject.Zack Snyder and Gerard Butler have coasted on the success of their parts in this film, and deservedly so.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsAaron Taylor-JohnsonNicolas CageChloë Grace MoretzDave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a superhero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.Loved it, it was everything I had hoped for. I thought it was a really good film, a hilarious romantic comedy haha.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsColin FirthTaron EgertonSamuel L. JacksonA spy organisation recruits a promising street kid into the agency's training program, while a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.
- DirectorPete TravisStarsKarl UrbanOlivia ThirlbyLena HeadeyIn a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleMichael CaineKen WatanabeAfter witnessing his parents' death, Bruce learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. When he returns to Gotham as Batman, he must stop a secret society that intends to destroy the city.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsRyan ReynoldsJosh BrolinMorena BaccarinFoul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) assembles a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with abilities from the brutal, time-traveling cyborg Cable.Went in blind; didn't see one second of trailer footage, and my viewing was all the better for that. Obviously not as good as the first one, not as tight or fresh, but it might be funnier. Fans of the 1st should struggle to not like it, it's a very fun film.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthTom HiddlestonCate BlanchettImprisoned on the planet Sakaar, Thor must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela.Best of the Thor films by some measure. Whilst watching it, I did often wonder if it would last on repeat viewings, as it did focus, successfully, on humour, and comedies generally are very 'now', not timeless by their nature. It was very enjoyable though, funny, very quirky, well paced and action packed.
The only real negative is the acting from 3 individuals, where you had actors put on accents from other countries and doing an ATROCIOUS job of it. Why not hire English people to do English accents, or Americans for American roles? Skurge sounded silly, Cumberbatch sounded completely overwhelmed by the task and worst of all, Valkyrie. Utterly terrible. She was the major down point of the movie, she verged from posh to common, even South African for a time. And yet she received praise for the role! You'd think that these so-called 'critics' would have heard enough English accents by now in film to tell a good one from a bad one. - DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Gwyneth PaltrowTerrence HowardAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil.
- DirectorBob PersichettiPeter RamseyRodney RothmanStarsShameik MooreJake JohnsonHailee SteinfeldTeen Miles Morales becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.Just when I thought that I was sick of Spiderman films, this gave us something different. I've always been a fan of multiverses, and this is why; you've got so much to mine from them, so many possibilities. Colourful and featuring some unexpectedly dark turns.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsRainn WilsonElliot PageLiv TylerAfter his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, but lacking in heroic skills.Essentially Kick Ass on a lower budget.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanIan McKellenIn a world where mutants (evolved super-powered humans) exist and are discriminated against, two groups form for an inevitable clash: the supremacist Brotherhood, and the pacifist X-Men.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstWillem DafoeAfter being bitten by a genetically-modified spider, a shy teenager gains spider-like abilities that he uses to fight injustice as a masked superhero and face a vengeful enemy.
- DirectorJosh TrankStarsDane DeHaanAlex RussellMichael B. JordanThree high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.Max Landis' only worthwhile piece of work.
- DirectorJoe JohnstonStarsChris EvansHugo WeavingSamuel L. JacksonSteve Rogers, a rejected military soldier, transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a "Super-Soldier serum". But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a warmonger and a terrorist organization.
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsEdward NortonLiv TylerTim RothBruce Banner, a scientist on the run from the U.S. Government, must find a cure for the monster he turns into whenever he loses his temper.Underrated. It's a pretty good film, Ed Norton's a top actor, the action scenes were cool too.
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandSamuel L. JacksonJake GyllenhaalFollowing the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.Better than Homecoming, maybe. Never taking itself too seriously, not trying to be or best the Tobey films (unlike TASM). Just comfortable being its own thing. An enjoyable, whimsical diversion.
- DirectorScott DerricksonStarsBenedict CumberbatchChiwetel EjioforRachel McAdamsWhile on a journey of physical and spiritual healing, a brilliant neurosurgeon is drawn into the world of the mystic arts. The sort of effort I want from Marvel; embrace the wackiness! When you've got a slew of superhero movies coming out constantly, the way to avoid going stale is providing a unique angle, and magic, astral dimensions, time loops etc. is a fine example of that. Got maybe a little action heavy in the last half an hour, took 20 minutes to start really kicking into gear too but that 50 minute chunk in the middle especially, I was enraptured.
- DirectorAnna BodenRyan FleckStarsBrie LarsonSamuel L. JacksonBen MendelsohnCarol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. For all of the negativity surrounding it, I was pleasantly surprised. There's nothing really wrong with it, beyond the unnecessary cheese in the 2nd half. The 1st half especially was zippy.
- DirectorJames WanStarsJason MomoaAmber HeardWillem DafoeArthur Curry, the human-born heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, goes on a quest to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land. The dialogue and acting were often hammy (Black Manta, I'm looking at you more than anyone), but the world building and the visuals especially were impressive.
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandMichael KeatonRobert Downey Jr.Peter Parker balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of a new menace prowling the skies of New York City.Felt like a tired imitation of the 2002 original for the first 30 minutes but after that, it soon became its own thing and turned out to be an alright movie.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloWhen Tony Stark and Bruce Banner try to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping program called Ultron, things go horribly wrong and it's up to Earth's mightiest heroes to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plan. What Endgame is to Infinity War, this is to Avengers 1. Except better.
- DirectorGavin HoodStarsHugh JackmanLiev SchreiberRyan ReynoldsThe early years of James Logan, featuring his rivalry with his brother Victor Creed, his service in the special forces team Weapon X, and his experimentation into the metal-lined mutant Wolverine.A little underrated.
- DirectorTimur BekmambetovStarsAngelina JolieJames McAvoyMorgan FreemanA frustrated office worker discovers that he is the son of a professional assassin, and that he shares his father's superhuman killing abilities.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsViggo MortensenMaria BelloEd HarrisA mild-mannered man becomes a local hero through an act of violence, which sets off repercussions that will shake his family to its very core.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansSamuel L. JacksonScarlett JohanssonAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier.Contrary to the complete lack of objectivity around this film, no characters developed, the story was half baked and it had so many cliches. There was also no ambiguity at all for a conspiracy thriller. What had the potential to be an amazing, layered film unlike anything in the MCU was kept pretty basic.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsRon PerlmanDoug JonesSelma BlairA demon raised from infancy after being conjured by and rescued from the Nazis, grows up to become a defender against the forces of darkness. Not really a fan of Del Toro, but I can't argue with what he did here.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsJackie Earle HaleyPatrick WilsonCarla GuginoIn a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history. The definition of a mixed bag. Too flawed to be higher but so much about it is really, really good. I've seen it many times.
- DirectorStephen NorringtonStarsSean ConneryStuart TownsendPeta WilsonIn an alternate Victorian Age world, a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science fiction, and adventure characters team up on a secret mission.I've never understood the ire it receives. It's such a watchable, team orientated, fun little film. Like an Avengers before The Avengers.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddMichael DouglasCorey StollArmed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, cat burglar Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, pull off a plan that will save the world. An alright, middle of the road Marvel movie. The climax at the end had real potential to go from, but creativity wasn't a focus in Ant-Man.
- DirectorTom McGrathStarsWill FerrellJonah HillBrad PittEvil genius Megamind finally defeats his do-gooder nemesis, Metro Man, but is left without a purpose in a superhero-free world.Flew under a few too many radars.
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsChris HemsworthAnthony HopkinsNatalie PortmanThe powerful but arrogant god Thor is cast out of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.Doesn't hold up as well when compared to what's been released in the decade since. A little basic maybe.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanWill Yun LeeTao OkamotoWolverine comes to Japan to meet an old friend whose life he saved years ago, and gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving yakuza and mutants.Loved it initially, pretty tepid upon the last viewing.
- DirectorPeyton ReedStarsPaul RuddEvangeline LillyMichael PeñaAs Scott Lang balances being both a superhero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.Unusually low stakes, weak villain and it's an inconsequential film in the grand scheme of things, and yet it's a fun enough diversion too. You know what you're getting and you're given it.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsBen AffleckGal GadotJason MomoaFueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his new-found ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Not the car crash that I was led to believe it was. It's fine. And yet, you can see that two different directors had a go at it; it's a bit messy. Tonally. Visually, it looks very 'tv' and like a video game for the CGI scenes. Considering that Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman etc. are A-listers compared to The Avengers' B-listers, this film should've been far more successful and better to boot, but diabolical it is not.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsMichael CeraMary Elizabeth WinsteadKieran CulkinIn a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart. The first 20 minutes set up a very fun, witty film, different, but I didn't like it as much afterwards, too bombastic. It's okay, I don't need to see it again though.
- DirectorBrett RatnerStarsPatrick StewartHugh JackmanHalle BerryThe human government develops a cure for mutations, and Jean Grey becomes a darker uncontrollable persona called the Phoenix who allies with Magneto, causing escalation into an all-out battle for the X-Men.Kinberg successfully derailed this franchise here (and this was only the first time!), that said, disappointing as it is, following on from such a great sequel, it's an okay enough action film with a good cast.
- DirectorMike MitchellStarsKurt RussellKelly PrestonMichael AngaranoSet in an era where superheroes are commonly known and accepted, young William Stronghold, the son of the Commander and Jetstream, tries to find a balance between being a normal teenager and an extraordinary being.Very fun first half but got less interesting as it went on. Too rote.
- DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineRobin WrightWhen a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.Quite disappointing. Opening with very hammy, Vikings style accents, the whole film was fairly rote, plodding along without conjuring up much interest. It did nothing new, other than be very political; from the many derogatory statements towards men, then white men, complaining constantly about racism, sexism, privilege, it was like an Antifa member wrote it. Then you've got an island of Amazonians, and of course they can't bear to have a movie of just white people, that's offensive(!), so they had to throw in some token black people, which was so laughably out of place, and one of the black warriors had to be tougher than all of the white women too, it was desperate. I wouldn't have even minded all of this left-wing nonsense if the movie did something different or interesting, but it didn't. You've seen fish out of water/origin stories done better, many times before.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.Bloated, hit and miss, obviously not nearly as good as Vol. 1 but it's a fun ride. The major complaint about MCU films is the samey factor, and this doesn't follow that trend, so I appreciated that. It does feel like the magic from the first one is kinda gone though, writing wise. Phoned in a little bit.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Mickey RourkeGwyneth PaltrowWith the world now aware of his identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark must contend with both his declining health and a vengeful mad man with ties to his father's legacy. The weakest one, felt like a film made for the sake of it, without a real purpose. However, Sam Rockwell's few seconds of dancing forever stand out for me. The man has moves.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsTobey MaguireKirsten DunstTopher GraceA strange black entity from another world bonds with Peter Parker and causes inner turmoil as he contends with new villains, temptations, and revenge.Quite boring. A few cool action scenes don't save it.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.Simon Kinberg, back to ruin the X-Men again (I heard he did it AGAIN with Apocalypse!). He must have an insane amount of dirt on the industry, to keep getting work. The future scenes featured good action scenes, other than that? Eh.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.Much like Batman v Superman but not quite as bad. The first hour was boring, the story was a bit of a mess and it only really had action going for it.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe. It reminds me of The Incredibles 2;not excelling in any way. Forgettable is an apt term, and when held up side-by-side with their predecessors, the sequels will be forgotten. As Incredibles 2 was minutes after being seen, as Endgame is to me. And it was way, way too long.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonHolly HunterSarah VowellThe Incredibles family takes on a new mission which involves a change in family roles: Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible) must manage the house while his wife Helen (Elastigirl) goes out to save the world.Very forgettable, which is such a let down when you think of how long we've waited after such a supremely good first film. The shadow of the first film looms over it, with its subversive intelligence, depth and originality not really found this time around; it’s a fun enough ride for 2 hours, but I can’t see myself watching it again repeatedly like the original.
- DirectorAlan TaylorStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanTom HiddlestonWhen the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster.Bleugh.
