Best 10 of 2013
Well, another year over, and one well spent inside the theaters. Good to see that the "female-protagonists-are-box-office-poison" curse has finally been lifted, with Gravity, The Heat and Hunger Games making solid money, as well as getting raving reviews. Comic book adaptations still work; there were some guilty pleasures along the way (that's you, Pacific Rim); John McClane may want to change screenwriters (not that I thought it was a bad movie, but it was a mediocre Die Hard movie). Time to make a list of ten titles that I will surely cherish in years to come. I resisted the urge to make it a Best 12, and I certainly had to kill a few darlings here (Sorry, World War Z and We're The Millers. And Hobbit 2: you would have made the list, if it weren't for all those introductions and cheesy cliffhangers). Bear with me here, I am from the Netherlands, so there is a 2012 movie on the list because I didn't get to see it earlier; I probably still haven't seen a couple of good ones that would have made the list (edit: I LOVED the Evil Dead remake and would have included it, had I seen it a few months earlier); and I have yet to see most of the 2013 Oscar candidates. But there is always next year's list (edit: Wolf of Wall Street is topping that list already!).
