- DirectorDerek CianfranceStarsRyan GoslingBradley CooperEva MendesTwo men and their sons must deal with the unforeseen consequences of their actions.Bradley Cooper tops his awesome performance in Silver Linings Playbook as a rookie cop on the tale of a motorcycle stunt rider turned bank robber played by the always cool Ryan Gosling. A superb script and a handful of fantastic performances make this the best film of the year, hands-down.
- DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCarey MulliganJoel EdgertonA writer and wall street trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the best of his generation, and it's a thrill to see him portray one of the most charismatic characters in history in the big screen adaptation of what many consider to be the great American novel. Carey Mulligan shines as Daisy, and the supporting cast turn in great performances as well. Add Baz Luhrman's unique vision and you've got what makes this modernized roaring 20's party flick one of the coolest movies in recent memory.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsJane LevyShiloh FernandezJessica LucasFive friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. An awesomely graphic and utterly brutal re-imagining of one of the greatest horror movies ever. Some of the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time. Horror films continue to get better, and it is a refreshing change to see the under appreciated genre doing so well after years of some truly awful horror films.
- DirectorJames WanStarsPatrick WilsonVera FarmigaRon LivingstonParanormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. The Conjuring is brilliant. An atmospheric haunted house film that takes the "haunted house" concept to the level that The Cabin in the Woods took the "isolated cabin in the woods" concept to last year. Not many films still actually give me the creeps, but this one was a refreshing exception.
- DirectorShane BlackStarsRobert Downey Jr.Guy PearceGwyneth PaltrowWhen Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution. The Iron Man series has always been my personal favorite of all the super hero blockbusters. Robert Downey Jr. exudes charisma as Tony Stark, and delivers as usual in the third installment. It will take a lot for a super hero flick to live up to the greatness of the first Iron Man, but Iron Man 3 comes pretty damn close, easily topping the second installment and then some.
- DirectorEvan GoldbergSeth RogenStarsJames FrancoJonah HillSeth RogenSix Los Angeles celebrities are stuck in James Franco's house after a series of devastating events just destroyed the city. Inside, the group not only have to face the apocalypse, but themselves. The funniest film of the year. If the world does indeed end, I want to be at James Franco's mansion for it. Seth Rogen can make any film watchable, but his is just a slew of epic performances in this hilarious movie.
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsGerard ButlerAaron EckhartMorgan FreemanSecret Service agent Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack and works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.I went to see this on a whim with very little expectation one night with a friend of mine out of boredom. I was taken aback as to how good it actually was, balancing action with story so well that I genuinely believed the White House could fall under attack one day. If it ever does, I hope someone as badass as Mike Banning is there to defend it.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsRooney MaraChanning TatumJude LawA young woman's world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects. An above average thriller propelled by the direction of Steven Soderbergh. It's Hitchcockian at times, but in a Soderbergh way. Nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary, but an entertaining and thought provoking way to spend two hours.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsJames FrancoMichelle WilliamsRachel WeiszA small-time magician is swept away to an enchanted land and is forced into a power struggle between three witches.Maybe it's because The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies ever made, but I enjoyed every minute of this modernized prequel. It really is a surprisingly good film, and one you could revisit multiple times without getting bored.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsBradley CooperZach GalifianakisEd HelmsWhen one of their own is kidnapped by an angry gangster, the Wolf Pack must track down Mr. Chow, who has escaped from prison and is on the run.First off, nothing is gonna top The Hangover. The Hangover will go down as one of the funniest movies ever made, and comparing any movie to it (even it's own sequels) is not fair. So, going into the third installment with an open mind, I found his to be a movie that actually does justice to the Hangover name. 2 was not something to be proud of, but the filmmakers and cast make up for that film with a send-off worthy of it's already legendary name.
