Favourite horror movies
This is a short list of horror flicks I've watched recently that I loved. They are not all the same kind of horror movie, my tastes can vary wildly depending on how well the movie is made. There's a mix of sophisticated, subtle thrillers, in-your-face slasher, campy horror, odd ball horror and others. Hope they help you decide what to watch too. These are listed in no particular order and I will be adding to the list as I go.

- DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsLim Soo-jungYum Jung-ahKim Kap-suAfter being institutionalized in a mental hospital, Su-mi reunites with her sister, Su-yeon, and they return to live at their country home. But strange events plague the house, leading to surprising revelations and a shocking conclusion.Awesomely beautiful and creepy South Korean horror flick. It's a cult classic that Hollywood felt obliged to steal and remake as The Uninvited (nowhere near as good). This was my introduction to Asian horror movies and created an obsession!
- DirectorJ.A. BayonaStarsBelén RuedaFernando CayoRoger PríncepA woman brings her family back to her childhood home, which used to be an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend.Brilliant Del Torro production. No gore, very little violence but creepy & atmospheric as all get out, some fine scare moments and a fantastic original plot. Everything about this movie is top class and it's a must see for any horror fan.
- DirectorSean ByrneStarsXavier SamuelRobin McLeavyJohn BrumptonWhen Brent turns down his classmate Lola's invitation to the prom, she concocts a wildly violent plan for revenge.Delightfully macabre and gruesome Australian indie thriller that wipes the floor with all the "torture flick" wannabes. Plus it has gorgeous colors, cool music, a darkly comic streak and a great ending. See it if you don't mind a lot of gore with your horror fun. I flinched and covered my eyes more than once!
- DirectorTakashi ShimizuStarsMegumi OkinaMisaki ItôMisa UeharaA mysterious and vengeful spirit marks and pursues anybody who dares enter the house in which it resides. The original Japanese movie that was remade for American audiences as "The Grudge" and has been ripped off by many a horror flick every since. Just brilliant. Watch this one instead of or at least before the disappointing remake.
- DirectorNobuhiko ÔbayashiStarsKimiko IkegamiMiki JinboKumiko ÔbaA schoolgirl and six of her classmates travel to her aunt's country home, which turns out to be haunted. The most bizarre haunted house movie ever made, produced in Japan by Obayashi and also known by it's Japanese title "Hausu". This is like Beetlejuice meets Ten Little Indians, Monkey & Monty Pythons Flying Circus all rolled into the Night of the Living Dead. Full of Japanese craziness and ultra-gore fantasy I can't really do justice to what this flick is like or what it's about. Approach with an open mind. YOU MUST SEE IT but DON'T drop any acid before you do. This is one hell of a psychotic ride!
- DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsJohn CusackSamuel L. JacksonMary McCormackA man who specialises in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror.Another bizarre but brilliant horror/thriller that doesn't rely on a whole lot of slasher deaths, gore etc to bring the thrills and scares to it's audience. Based on a Stephen King short story this one delivers the goods!
- DirectorHerbert WiseStarsAdrian RawlinsBernard HeptonDavid DakerA lawyer travels to a small seaside town to settle the estate of a recently deceased woman, but soon becomes ensnared in something much more sinister.Brilliant atmospheric British ghost story with chills galore and an original story set in a mist enshrouded island mansion. A must see for serious fans of the genre - the recent remake starring Daniel Radcliffe is a pale imitation but surprisingly still worth watching too. Just nowhere near as good as the original.
- DirectorAlejandro AmenábarStarsNicole KidmanChristopher EcclestonFionnula FlanaganIn 1945, immediately following the end of Second World War, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands becomes convinced that the home is haunted.Even tho it's got Nicole Kidman in it I ended up loving this flick. Superbly directed & acted with a story to die for. Highly recommended.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsJessica ChastainNikolaj Coster-WaldauMegan CharpentierAfter a young couple take in their two nieces, they suspect that a supernatural spirit named Mama has latched onto their family. This film has received some flack from reviewers at IMDB but I loved it. Apart from a slight issue with the CGI at the end I enjoyed everything about this gorgeous scarey original & unpredictable flick. The acting, especially from the kids is incredible and it packs a whallop with scares, chills and thrills. Must see!
- DirectorDrew GoddardStarsKristen ConnollyChris HemsworthAnna HutchisonFive college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.Loved it's kooky premise, it's horror & gore, it's campy acting and the whole premise of what was behind it all. One of the best I've seen.
- DirectorTomas AlfredsonStarsKåre HedebrantLina LeanderssonPer RagnarOskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.Awesome Swedish vampire flick with a difference. The cinematography is stunning and once again some fantastic acting from the young stars. This is another film Hollywood stole and remade.... when will they quit that and just promote the original ones? The remake is called Let Me In. I don't know what it's like as I haven't watched it yet but it would be almost impossible to beat the beauty & thrill of this original movie. It has some gorey moments but they are not gratutious and don't detract or cheapen the film as a whole. Another one that should not be missed.
- DirectorIain SoftleyStarsKate HudsonPeter SarsgaardJoy BryantA hospice nurse working at a spooky New Orleans plantation home finds herself entangled in a mystery involving the house's dark past.Pretty good modern tale of voodoo/hoodoo and ghosts in the attic set in the moody bayou & New Orleans streets. This is more a thriller/mystery than "horror" and would be safe to watch with the kids (barring one distressing scene that might need a bit of parental guidance). Hard core horror fans who don't appreciate old-skool horror might find it boring :) because there's no gore or violence to speak of and no scary monsters or inbred hooligans.
- DirectorBrad AndersonStarsDavid CarusoStephen GevedonPaul GuilfoyleTensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back.Another creepy horror with very little gore/violence. Great tense atmosphere and spooky directing with a fascinating story.
- DirectorDavid MoreauXavier PaludStarsOlivia BonamyMichaël CohenAdriana MoccaLucas and Clementine live peacefully in their isolated country house, but one night they wake up to strange noise... they're not alone... and a group of hooded assailants begin to terrorize them throughout the night.Another atmospheric spooky tale - this time from France. It's the kind of film a lot of other horror flicks are trying to make but where most fail for bad plots, unlikely plot-drivers etc, this one is tight and masterful. Don't believe the "based on true story" bit tho :) Very little gore, mostly psychological thriller.
- DirectorHideo NakataStarsHitomi KurokiRio KannoMirei OguchiA mother and her 6-year-old daughter move into a creepy apartment whose every surface is permeated by water.AKA the original Dark Water. If you watched the remake and hated it (like most people) give this one a try. It's much MUCH better
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsRyo IshibashiEihi ShiinaTetsu SawakiA widower takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife. The one he fancies is not who she appears to be after all. This is a BRILLIANT horror flick but wont be to everyone's taste. If you're not a big fan of horror (esp if you're squeamish about violence) then skip it. But if you are really into horror movies this should be at the top of your list.
- DirectorJonas BarnesMichael ManasseriStarsTina HoutzSarah ThompsonNana VisitorIn a small college town, a young girl working on a babysitting job in a rural farm is terrorized throughout the night. This is a delightful surprise package. Don't be fooled by the title or the synopsis. This is not what you think it will be. Hard to believe it was made on a low budget! This film has a lot of class & a lot of talent behind and in front of the cameras. Also a lot of nasty scenes so only watch if you can deal with the more hard core horror :)
- DirectorMichael WinnerStarsCristina RainesAva GardnerChris SarandonA young woman moves into an apartment in a building which houses a sinister evil. This is here because it's a brilliantly classic piece of 70's schlock-horror with an incredible cast, lots of terrible acting, awesome gore, over the top music & just one of the most entertaining, ridiculous, brilliant, moody, suspenseful and downright crazy horror flicks I've seen. Apparently Fulci was inspired by this one. It's not Oscar material - but it's a bloody good romp.
