- DirectorHarald ReinlStarsPierre BriceLex BarkerHerbert LomIn their first cinematic adventure, Apache chief Winnetou and mountain man Old Shatterhand pursue a gang of murderous outlaws who will stop at nothing to find the legendary treasure of Silver Lake.West Germany/Yugoslavia/France: I really liked this film. The Yugoslav locations are simply spectacular and the story works. Lex Barker is especially good as Old Shatterhand. Karin Dor is simply beautiful in this film. This was the first of the Winnetou films and easily one of the best.
- DirectorHarald ReinlStarsLex BarkerPierre BriceMarie VersiniWhen violent conflict breaks out between greedy railroaders and a tribe of Mescalero Apaches, only two men, destined to be blood brothers, can prevent all-out war: chief's son Winnetou and German engineer Old Shatterhand.West Germany/Italy/Yugoslavia: Not as good as Treasure of Silver Lake but the action is top notch and Lex Barker is his usual stoic self. The actress who plays Winnetou's sister is pretty but leaves a lot to be desired as far as acting is concerned.Ralf Wolter (Sam Hawkens) does his usual funny Benny Hill type of impression .
- DirectorAlfred VohrerStarsPierre BriceGötz GeorgeElke SommerOutlaws disguised as Indians commit crimes against settlers but Winnetou and Old Surehand are determined to unmask the bandits and keep the peace between settlers and Indians.West Germany/Yugoslavia/Italy/France: Stewart Granger isn't as good as Lex Barker, so right away this film loses something. The Yugoslav locations are still beautiful but this film is nowhere near as good as the first two.
- DirectorHarald ReinlStarsLex BarkerPierre BriceRik BattagliaAn army gold shipment and its escort vanish in the Ozarks, prompting accusations of theft and desertion but frontiersman Old Shatterhand and Apache chief Winnetou help solve the mystery of the missing army gold.West Germany/Italy/Yugoslavia: The last Winnetou film is quite suspenseful and it has Karin Dor, once again looking amazing. The story is quite good and Lex Barker is solid as always. A great way to end the series.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodGian Maria VolontèMarianne KochA wandering gunfighter plays two rival families against each other in a town torn apart by greed, pride, and revenge.Italy/Spain/west Germany: A great start to the Man With No Name trilogy. Clint Eastwood rocks this film. Gian Maria Volonte is a despicable villain and Marianne Koch an amazing leading lady. The final showdown is very exciting. I absolutely love the little musical exclamation points throughout.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodLee Van CleefGian Maria VolontèTwo bounty hunters with the same intentions team up to track down a gang of outlaws led by a psychotic Mexican bandit, who is plotting an audacious bank robbery.Italy/Spain/West Germany: A little too long but the pairing of Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef is inspired. Gian Maria Volonte is once again a perfect (hideous) villain. The story is quite tense. Probably the weakest of the trilogy but still a good film.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodEli WallachLee Van CleefA bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.Italy/Spain/West Germany/USA: Terrific film with a trio of great actors and a story that throws in everything including the kitchen sink. The civil war scenes add a much needed pathos to the proceedings and the final shootout in the graveyard is as classic as they get. If it wasn't for Once Upon A Time in the West, this film would be the greatest Euro western ever.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsHenry FondaCharles BronsonClaudia CardinaleA mysterious stranger with a harmonica joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad.Italy/USA: The greatest Euro Western ever and one of the best westerns of all time, period. Henry Fonda is evil incarnate and Charles Bronson simply marvelous. The location work in Monument Valley elevates this film beyond a mere western. The finale is amazing. For those who have never seen a Euro western, start here please.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsRod SteigerJames CoburnRomolo ValliA low-life bandit and an I.R.A. explosives expert rebel against the government and become heroes of the Mexican Revolution.Italy/Spain/USA: Didn't enjoy this film as much as other Sergio Leone films. Maybe it is James Coburn. Rod Steiger is good but this film just doesn't do it for me.
- DirectorGianfranco ParoliniStarsLee Van CleefWilliam BergerIgnazio SpallaA master gunfighter sides with a banjo-playing drifter and a Mexican tramp to foil the dignitaries of Daugherty, who want to use stolen army money to buy land that the railroad will cross.Italy: Very well done western with Lee Van Cleef in top form. Easily the best of the 3 Sabata films. Solid.
- DirectorGianfranco ParoliniStarsYul BrynnerDean ReedIgnazio SpallaSabata helps a band of Mexican revolutionaries steal a wagon-load of gold from the occupying Austrian forces of Emperor Maximilian I.Italy/Spain: Ok, I admit it: I really enjoyed this film. It is perfectly over-the-top with a very silly performance by Yul Brynner. Pedro Sanchez/Ignazio Spalla is also terrific. The death of the colonel is very imaginative as is the dance of death. This was originally a film about a character named Indio Black but was changed to Sabata when the first film became a hit.
- DirectorGianfranco ParoliniStarsLee Van CleefReiner SchöneGiampiero AlbertiniThe citizens of Hobsonville hire Sabata to rid them of the McIntock clan, who are forcibly and unlawfully taxing them under the pretext of town development.Italy/France/West Germany: What a horrible film with Van Cleef not taking anything seriously. Only the insane opening saves this from being a total bomb.
- DirectorGiorgio SteganiStarsLee Van CleefAntonio SabatoLionel StanderA trio of thieves plot to steal a town's silver shipment but a turn of events makes them the town's heroes.Italy/West Germany: Surprisingly not very violent Euro western with a good performance by Van Cleef and a solid story.
- DirectorEnzo BarboniStarsTerence HillBud SpencerSteffen ZachariasA lazy, unorthodox gunfighter and his portly, horse-thieving brother defend a Mormon settlement from a land-grabbing Major, a Mexican bandit, and their henchmen.Italy: Silly Terence Hill-Bud Spencer picture is a good film for a rainy Sunday.
- DirectorEnzo BarboniStarsTerence HillBud SpencerYanti SomerBambino tries to teach his brother Trinity how to become an outlaw, but the two wind up saving a pioneer family and breaking up an arms ring instead.Italy: Not as good as They Call Me Trinity but the pairing of Terence Hill and Bud Spencer still works.
- DirectorLouis MalleStarsBrigitte BardotJeanne MoreauGeorge HamiltonSomewhere in Central America in 1907: Maria II is the daughter of an Irish terrorist. After her father's death, she meets Maria I, a singer in a circus. She decides to stay with the circus, and on her debut as a singer, she unintentionally invents the strip-tease and makes the circus famous. Then they accidentally meet a socialist revolutionary and find themselves leading a revolution against the dictator, the capitalists and the Church.France/Italy: Over-the-top and very funny.
- DirectorFerdinando BaldiStarsTony AnthonyGene QuintanoVictoria AbrilTragedy strikes as two ruthless brothers kidnap a bride during her wedding. Hurt and angry, H.H. begins his quest to find the love he lost, and take vengeance upon the wicked. Comin' at Ya.Italy/Spain/USA: I saw this in the theatre in 3D. Not really worth much without the 3D effects. Only redeeming point: the lovely Victoria Abril.
- DirectorDuccio TessariStarsAlain DelonStanley BakerOttavia PiccoloIn the New World, a new Spanish governor finds the province of Nueva Aragón under the iron fist of the corrupt Colonel Huerta and vows to bring justice under the guise of a masked avenger.Italy/France: Stunt filled and full of life, this European Zorro has an energetic Alain Delon in the title role. Definitely a good film to see on a cold night.
- DirectorMatt CimberStarsLaurene LandonKen RobersonCihangir GaffariFiery blonde half-breed Yellow Hair and her easygoing sidekick the Pecos Kid are after a fortune in Mayan gold. The courageous duo have run-ins with an army of Mexican soldiers, a gang of dastardly bandits, and a lethal tribe of Aztec warriors while searching the countryside for said gold fortune.Spain/USA: Not as good as it should have been. The Spanish locations are nice but the film is missing something: a decent script.
- DirectorTonino ValeriiStarsTerence HillHenry FondaJean MartinA young, easy-going gunman worships and competes with a famed gunfighter, insisting that he must face down a gang of 150 outlaws before he can retire.Italy/France/West Germany: Please don't shoot me: I didn't care for this film. It goes on and on and on. The finale is very good and Terence Hill is funny but that is it for me.
- DirectorHarald ReinlStarsLex BarkerPierre BriceAnthony SteelForester, a ruthless oil baron, wants to create a war between the native American tribes and the white men. Old Shatterhand, Winnetou and their sidekick Castlepool try to prevent this.West Germany/France/Italy/Yugoslavia: Terrific Winnetou entry has a great cast that includes Klaus Kinski and a very young Terence Hill and the always gorgeous Karin Dor. The Yugoslav locations are spectacular as is the story with a very exciting finale where both the cavalry and Indians (along with Winnetou and Old Shatterhand) save the day and defeat the villains. The comic character of Castlepool actually helps out Shatterhand instead of being in the way. Great fun.
- DirectorGianfranco ParoliniStarsLee Van CleefJack PalanceRichard BooneA priest and his twin brother take turns defending a small town from the vicious Clayton gang.Italy/Israel: Absolute garbage western with awful performances by Lee Van Cleef (in a dual role) and Jack Palance. The only redeeming value: the breathtaking landscapes of the Negev desert in Israel (Yes you read that correctly: Israel). One of Golan-Globus' early efforts features shaky camera work, cringe worthy dialogue and an incredibly stupid story. Oh yes, 1970s teen idol Leif Garret is also in this. Enough said.
- DirectorJoseph MandukeStarsLee Van CleefJim BrownJohn MarleyTom's parents are killed by Mexicans after their leader (Van Cleef) rapes his mother as he watched. He sets out to exact revenge and is ultimately helped by a successful gold prospector who has been robbed by the same group.USA/Israel: Another western shot in the Negev desert in Israel. This one, like God's Gun, stars Lee Van Cleef and Leif Garret but is surprisingly better. The story is much more polished and the revenge angle more interesting. Van Cleef is his usual slimy self and Jim Brown comes off ok. The dialogue is poor and the acting quite bad but the revenge plot keeps the whole thing going. The Negev desert locations are excellent. Garret is actually not bad. Ok overall.
- DirectorGiulio PetroniStarsLee Van CleefJohn Phillip LawMario BregaA young gunfighter forms a tenuous alliance with an aging ex-outlaw to track down and eliminate the bandits who killed his family, till the surprising end.Italy: Excellent revenge Spaghetti western with Lee Van Cleef in top form. He is ably assisted by John Phillip Law as the young gunslinger out to avenge his parents' deaths. Good taught script with some brilliant flashbacks and great action. Not to be missed.
- DirectorEdwin SherinStarsBurt LancasterSusan ClarkFrank SilveraA Mexican-American sheriff (Burt Lancaster) must resort to violence against a powerful rancher (Frank Tanner, played by Jon Cypher) in order to get just compensation for the pregnant Indian widow of a wrongly killed black man.USA/Spain: Technically this is an American western but since it was shot in Spain, I am including it on my list. Based on a story by Elmore Leonard, this is almost an anti-western. Burt Lancaster is brilliant as the (anti)hero. The story moves along at a great pace but character development is never sacrificed for the sake of action. The ending might leave a few people unsatisfied but I thought it was perfect for what had transpired (It is the same as in the book). Not to be missed if you are in the mood for a different type of western.
- DirectorTed KotcheffStarsGregory PeckDesi Arnaz Jr.Jack WardenAfter a bank robbery, runaway Scottish outlaw Arch Deans and his young half breed Kiowa partner Billy Two Hats develop a father-son relationship but Sheriff Henry Gifford is determined to capture or kill them.USA/UK/Israel: Also technically an American Western(with some British money), this one was shot in Israel so I am including it on my list as well. Very different film with a strong performance from Gregory Peck. The Negev desert locations are breathtaking and the story does not go where you expect it to. Another very offbeat Western that is worth your time.
- DirectorJohn HillcoatStarsRay WinstoneGuy PearceEmily WatsonA lawman apprehends a notorious outlaw and gives him nine days to kill his older brother, or else they'll execute his younger brother.Australia/UK: Violent, nihilistic, downbeat western that really disappointed me. The first 3/4 of the film is well done and tense (but much too violent). The last part is simply too downbeat and ridiculous. The ending too pat. I did not care for this film.
- DirectorPhillip BorsosStarsRichard FarnsworthJackie BurroughsKen PogueWhen an aging, but gentlemanly stagecoach robber is released from prison, he decides to go to Canada to become a train robber.Canada: Lovely little Canadian western with a dynamite performance from Richard Farnsworth. Not to be missed.
- DirectorRichard AttenboroughStarsPierce BrosnanStewart BickVlasta VranaThe story of the life and work of the Canadian fur trapper-turned-conservationist who claimed to be an aboriginal North American.UK/Canada: OK biopic of the famous imposter. Scenery is excellent but the story is clichéd and the acting very average.
- DirectorWilliam PhillipsStarsPaul GrossSienna GuilloryDustin MilliganA hardened American gunslinger is repeatedly thwarted in his attempts to mount a showdown in a friendly town in Canada where no one seems to understand or appreciate the brutal code of the American Wild West.Canada: Silly little western spoof with Paul Gross hitting the right notes. Perfect film for a rainy afternoon.
- DirectorClaude FournierStarsDonald SutherlandGordon TootoosisChief Dan GeorgeBased on an actual event, this is the tragic story of Saskatchewan fugitive Almighty Voice, a Cree Indian who is arrested for stealing government livestock out of desperate hunger.Canada: This is what happens when screenwriters get a hold a true story and let their imaginations run wild. Not a bad film but could have been 1000 times better if they had stuck to the historical facts and not tried to embellish them. Donald Sutherland is actually good in this. The Saskatchewan backdrop is simply spectacular.
- DirectorClay BorrisStarsArt HindleReiner SchöneAnthony AddabboThe Everetts, two brothers and a cousin are trying to make a go of their ranch in Kansas, but Deke Turner, someone who wants to see them fail, is doing everything he can to see that happen. Featuring George Kennedy.Canada: Terrible made for TV nonsense. Don't waste your time.
- DirectorDon HaldaneStarsFrances HylandJames B. DouglasLester NixonThe epic story of the opening of the Canadian West and the drought that brought the Depression in the thirties. This is the saga of a family who left eastern Canada to stake their future in the Prairies.Canada: Beautiful historical film has terrific performances and a solid script. Definitely worth your time.
- DirectorJerry HopperStarsRichard BooneLeslie CaronGabi AmraniA nun, the only survivor of an Indian massacre of a wagon train, is taken in by a cantankerous old gunfighter.Israel: One of the first ever Israeli westerns is not too bad. It includes a droll performance by Richard Boone and a stoic performance from the ever lovely Leslie Caron. The Negev desert locations are spectacular but the story never quite gets going. Not a bad film overall.
- DirectorJon CassarStarsEsther Purves-SmithKiefer SutherlandDonald SutherlandIn 1872, an embittered gunslinger named John Henry Clayton attempts to make amends with his estranged father Reverend Samuel Clayton while their community is besieged by ruthless land-grabbers.Canada/France/USA: Well made Canadian western with Donald and Keifer Sutherland appearing as father and son. The story has been told a thousand times before but the shootout ending is very exciting and includes a nice little twist. Keifer is surprisingly good but it is Michael Wincott who steals the show in a small role. Spectacular Alberta scenery is the the icing on the cake. Definitely worth checking out.
- DirectorRicardo BlascoStarsRichard HarrisonGiacomo Rossi StuartMikaelaAn avenging stranger guns down a gang of ruthless bandits in revenge for the murder of his family.Spain/Italy: Pretty ordinary Spanish/Italian western is remarkable only because it was produced one year before A Fistful of Dollars. The cast are Ok and the story engaging enough but it lacks the over-the-top drama of Leone westerns. Locations in Spain are spectacular. Richard Harrison as the "hero" Gringo is ok. There is a very odd/risque romance with his adopted sister that is quite jarring. Apart from that, a pretty straightforward western. Ennio Morricone score is quite lackluster. To see only if there is nothing else on.
- DirectorDamiano DamianiStarsTerence HillMiou-MiouRobert CharleboisThree rogues set out to rob $300,000 from an Indian-hating cavalry major.Italy/France/West Germany: Very silly comedy Spaghetti Western with a terrific cast but the film runs too long and has too many plot twists. Patrick McGoohan is great as the villain of the film. Robert Charlebois is actually quite good as is Miou-Miou. Klaus Kinski steals the show in his short sequence. Terence Hill is his usual smart-ass character. The landscapes in Spain and in Monument Valley are spectacular. This is the kind of movie you can only enjoy if you put your brain on "idle" .
- DirectorHarald ReinlStarsLex BarkerPierre BriceRik BattagliaRollins' gang wants to grab land by inciting the settlers in a war against the Indians but Winnetou and Old Shatterhand try to keep the peace, until Rollins frames Winnetou up for the murder of Jicarilla Chief's son.West Germany/Italy/Yugoslavia: This is a very exciting entry in the Winnetou series with plenty of action and a relatively good story. The Croatian lakes and canyons where the film was shot are spectacular. The performances are on par for this type of Euro-Western. The entire thing is a good way to kill 90 minutes. Overall a lot of fun.
