Taja V. Simpson is a Louisiana native of West African and European decent and her colorful background allows her to constantly bring new characters to life. She fell in love with acting when she was seven years old when she and her cousins would 'play pretend'. They would watch movies, learn all the lines and then act them out for fun. Her favorite movie at that time was Berry Gordy's "The Last Dragon" and to this day she can still recite all the lines in the movie. "Who's The Master? Sho-Nuff!"
Although she loved acting at a young age, there weren't any programs or schools in Lake Charles, LA that would help cultivate that skill set. She went on to graduate from McNeese State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mass Communication and an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism. From there, she was on the path of being a News Reporter/Anchor.
After College, she moved to Houston, TX but there was a still small voice in her that kept saying, 'you should try acting,' so she did. She enrolled in acting workshops and ended up winning three awards for her performances. (Best Actress, Best Overall Performance and People's Choice) Now, she was bit by the acting bug and there was no turning back. She would have never thought that 'playing pretend' with her family as a young child would also be what she ultimately would do for a living.
Versatility is Taja's greatest accomplishments which is what lead her to guest star in multiple roles on some of the most popular television shows of our time. She received her first breakout role in The Bold & The Beautiful as Adele which she recurred on the show for over two years. Since then some of the shows she has appeared in are; Grey's Anatomy, NCIA, The Thundermans, NCIS:LA, The Soul Man, KC Undercover, and Lethal Weapon. Dominique DuVernay was born on "4/20" in New Orleans, La. She is most noted for her role as Brittany on the Emmy nominated ALLBLK series "A House Divided." In 2020 she won a HAPA award for best supporting actress in a digital series for this role.
One of the biggest questions that are always raised regarding Dominique is what her ethnic background is. This New Orleans native is authentically Creole with a splash of Latina. She is African American, Nicaraguan & French. Dominique and her younger sister were raised by a single mother and between the ages of 7 and 15 she and her family moved back and forth between New Orleans and the Bay Area until they settled back home in New Orleans for good. Dominique was no military brat but had her fair share of relocating growing up. She attended a whopping total of 23 schools from kindergarten through 12th grade in both Louisiana and California. Her unique childhood which also comprised of sometimes living in battered women and homeless shelters on occasion contributed to her fascination with various kinds of people, characters, accents, languages, anything that had to do with communication and varying personalities and as a child she would create different characters, give them all different accents, and taught herself a great deal of Spanish. She was a shy child but her mother, knowing her hidden talents and interests nudged her sign up for a role in the church play at the age of 14 and that's were she got bit by the acting bug.
Upon graduating high school she began her full pursuit of acting and has never looked back. Dominique has had appearances in films such as the RZA's "Cut Throat City" and 50 Cent's "Freelancers" as well as shows such as "The Game," "Claws," and so much more. Since 1992, she has devoted her time to a second facility at UCLA - the Rhonda Fleming Mann Resource Center for Women with Cancer, which opened in early 1994. This Center is the fulfillment of her vision to create a safe, warm place where women cancer patients and their families might receive the highest quality psychosocial and emotional care as well as assistance with the complex practical problems that arise with cancer. In August 1997, the Center opened "Reflections", a unique retail store and consultation suite that carries wigs, head coverings, breast prostheses and other items to help men, women and children deal with the physical appearance changes brought on by cancer and its treatments.
