His versatility, ability to do relaxed and intense roles, and convey emotion in almost any way, makes him a strong contender for best male actor, but Bardem's performance in Biutiful is SLIGHTLY better than Gosling's best role in Blue Valentine. Pointed towards the top spot in the future, definitely.
He can essentially act in the style of many other great actors, plus has a style of his own. He could play ANY role.
