It is much more about the generation change, with a youth looking for a new lifestyle and without a cause and facing adulthood as a boring routine, contrasting with a previous generarion that faced much harsher difficulties in war but also motivated by the struggle against fascism, than properly about a story. Indeed, there are many small stories in characters' lives which do not form a strong connection and in my opinion many of them should have been cut off in order to have a lighter, shorter and more lapidated film (perhaps half of its length would be the necessary). In the end of first half (the movie is divided in a juvenile half and an adult one) and in almost all the second half, screenplay seems less solid, lost in a difusion of events unnecessary to show the environment (what is done beautifully in the first hour, with a magnificent cinematography and camera moves) or to pass a message. What begins brilliantly, seeming a lighter version of great classics from Mikhail Kalatozov's moviemaking and cinematography, ends somewhat boring and unfocused. Another cut would make the film much better, a masterpiece.
