Martial Artists In Movies: The Real Deal - Volume 10
This is a list of legitimate martial artists appearing in movies, accompanied by the styles they practice(d), the recognition they've received for them, and individual trivia.
Qualifications:
--------------------------------------------------
I have begun crediting stunt performers for doubling others in fight scenes. I justify doing this for cases wherein the stunt performer is performing significant parts of the action themselves and is displayed on the screen as prominently or more than the actor or actress.
--------------------------------------------------
NOTE: a lot of the trivia listed here did originally come from IMDb pages, but I've only included information I was able to verify from other sources as well.
--------------------------------------------------
**Though I have done my utmost to ensure that all information below is factual and up-to-date, I may have made mistakes and therefore make no claims about this list's infallibility**
--------------------------------------------------

Qualifications:
- the performer must be an actual practitioner of a martial art; simply portraying martial artists in film, no matter how well or how often, is not enough
- the martial art(s) in question must be able to be identified and verified by a source other than hearsay
- individual accomplishments (e.g. tournaments won, belts held) must likewise be verifiable
- Mixed Martial Arts, Tai Chi, and weapons-based styles can only be credited if the person in question practices another style as well (I reserve the right to make exceptions)
- Kickboxing is considered a martial art
- Tae Bo, boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics are not considered martial arts
- styles incorporating firearms usage (e.g. Systema) are not considered

Marissa Labog, nicknamed "Mighty" by her peers, is committed to her strong belief in the transformative power of storytelling. Indicated by her nickname, as an actor, dancer, and stunt woman, Marissa is fearless and powerful in her pursuit for creative adventure earning her awards such as the Lester Horton Award for Outstanding Performer, the Solo Award, and an Ovation Award Nomination.
Unable to sit still she explored multiple avenues of movement from dance, gymnastics, and martial arts to running, jumping, and climbing trees. Dancing nationally and internationally with PCB Ballet and Inland Pacific Ballet, Marissa was urged by her loving mother to take up martial arts to learn to "defend" herself while traveling abroad. Enrolling her in Karate, Marissa excelled and furthered her study with capoeira, and Tae Kwon Do. Curious of her training and its connection to her growing desire to tell stories, Marissa went on to Scripps College where she graduated with a BA in both Dance and English and the coveted Lucille Morrison Scholarship. After graduation, Marissa performed as a principle dancer across the United States, Japan, Ireland, Portugal, Russia, China, Holland, Belgium, and England with the companies John Pennington and the famed LA Philharmonic, Oni Dance, Rosanna Gamson Worldwide, Company of Strangers, and Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre of which she is rehearsal director.
In a wonderful twist of fate, Marissa stumbled upon breaking (aka break dancing). Impressed by its freedom and pursuit of individuality, she went on to found and direct the breaking performance group called "One Step Ahead." Established as a youth advocate organization, OSA is now recognized as a prominent physical theater company.
She worked with such artists as Tina Turner, Christina Aguilera, LL Cool J, and prominent brands such as Nike, iPod, and Coke. Moving onto TV and Film, Marissa had worked on such shows as "The Drew Carey Show,""Fresh Beat Band," "Shake It Up" and films "House Bunny," "Bratz," and " Colombiana," to name a few. Through film work Marissa had the pleasure of working with superstar originator of parkour David Belle, delving her into the world of stunts, a world perfect for a woman of her unique skills.
Currently studying acting with Diana Castle and Steve Tiesort, Marissa can also be seen horrifying viewers as a terrorist in "Act of Valor," seducing lovers in "Hail Satan," and courageously, sometimes drunkenly, coping with the aftermath of a catastrophic flood in the theater production of "Dirty Mean Tricks." A proud member of SAG and Aftra, Marissa looks forward to many creative adventures coming her way.Wushu, Tae Kwon Do, Capoeira, Karate

Best seen in MR. AND MRS. KHILADI - Known throughout the annals of professional wrestling as "The Wildman from the Sudan," Abdullah the Butcher was born Lawrence Shreeve in Windsor, Ontario, on January 11, 1941. Wrestling at over 400 lbs through his career, Abby became a legend for bloodying opponents and was one of the first wrestlers to regularly use foreign objects in the ring on his opponents. His weapon of choice later in his career was a fork. Abby was a master at the professional wrestling talent of "blading," intentionally cutting onesself or an opponent in the forehead and bleeding through the match. The Butcher spent most of his wrestling career travelling from promotion to promotion. His wrestling gimmick, though extremely popular, tended to wear itself out quickly, so like his contemporary Andre the Giant, he was seldom a fixture for long in any one place, but was always remembered wherever he went and his return eagerly anticipated. Abby's wrestling character of the Wildman from Sudan was usually portrayed as an uncontrollable savage man who spoke no English, and he never gave interviews as himself but was interviewed through managers. This character probably accounted for his lack of appearances in films or other areas outside the pro wrestling world. Appearing as himself, a polite and well-spoken Canadian, would have done damage to his wrestling persona. Abdullah currently lives in the Atlanta, GA, area and operates a restaurant, Abdullah the Butcher's House of Ribs and Chinese Food. He still makes occasional guest appearances as a wrestler.Tae Kwon Do (7th Dan), Judo, Karate

Brooklyn native Paul Mormando is an internationally recognized martial artist. Proving himself as a child prodigy he became an expert in Tae Kwon Do, Jujitsu and Kung Fu, and developed his own style called Cha Ki Do. Paul's particular set of skills were recognized by the prestigious World Professional Karate Association and he has continued to share his talents as a highly successful martial arts instructor at his Mormando Martial Arts System schools.
The New York Police Department hired him to teach his skills with new officers, and the New York Board of Education engaged him to lecture students. Nicknamed in the press "Mr. Karate USA," Paul achieved worldwide fame when he set a world record at Shea Stadium in front of 25,000 people and a TV audience of two million by breaking 56 boards in 58 seconds! This was followed by exhibitions at Madison Square Garden and Nassau Coliseum in which Paul was the headliner.
It was inevitable that Hollywood would come calling, and Paul signed to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in an action movie called Double Fist. He was poised to become a major action star when tragedy struck - he was injured by a drunk driver and came close to losing his life. Doctors told him he would have to give up martial arts and perhaps would never walk again, but Paul triumphed over tragedy and through indomitable will and drive, regained his strength. He returned to teaching while pursuing an acting career. He turned Double Fist into a Tv series, and has enjoyed credits on Law And Order and The Four Of Us, while starring in and producing the feature film Bound By Debt, represented for international sales by Arthur Schweitzer and Cinevest Interactive.
Teamed with iconic writer/director John Gallagher and an all-star cast, Paul will step up to the next level of his acting career with his starring role in The Last HeroChan Ki Do (founder), Tae Kwon Do (10th Dan), Shotokan Karate, Jujitsu, Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai

Once in LA, Carrie-Anne was cast in other series regular opportunities like Matrix (which coincidentally presaged the movie that would later make her famous), and then Aaron Spelling's Models Inc.
Carrie-Anne's work was gaining attention when the late great Mali Finn brought her in to audition for The Wachowski's, who offered her the opportunity to create the iconic cyber warrior "Trinity". Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born January 3, 1956 in Peekskill, New York, USA, as the sixth of eleven children of Hutton Gibson, a railroad brakeman, and Anne Patricia (Reilly) Gibson (who died in December of 1990). His mother was Irish, from County Longford, while his American-born father is of mostly Irish descent.
Mel and his family moved to Australia in the late 1960s, settling in New South Wales, where Mel's paternal grandmother, contralto opera singer Eva Mylott, was born. After high school, Mel studied at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, performing at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts alongside future film thespians Judy Davis and Geoffrey Rush.
After college, Mel had a few stints on stage and starred in a few TV shows. Eventually, he was chosen to star in the films Mad Max (1979) and Tim (1979), co-starring Piper Laurie. The small budgeted Mad Max made him known worldwide, while Tim garnered him an award for Best Actor from the Australian Film Institute (equivalent to the Oscar).
Later, he went on to star in Gallipoli (1981), which earned him a second award for Best Actor from the AFI. In 1980, he married Robyn Moore and had seven children. In 1984, Mel made his American debut in The Bounty (1984), which co-starred Anthony Hopkins.
Then in 1987, Mel starred in what would become his signature series, Lethal Weapon (1987), in which he played "Martin Riggs". In 1990, he took on the interesting starring role in Hamlet (1990), which garnered him some critical praise. He also made the more endearing Forever Young (1992) and the somewhat disturbing The Man Without a Face (1993). 1995 brought his most famous role as "Sir William Wallace" in Braveheart (1995), for which he won two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.
From there, he made such box office hits as The Patriot (2000), Ransom (1996), and Payback (1999). Today, Mel remains an international superstar mogul, continuously topping the Hollywood power lists as well as the Most Beautiful and Sexiest lists.Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Tai Chi

A masculine and enigmatic actor whose life and movie career have had more ups and downs than the average rollercoaster and whose selection of roles has arguably derailed him from achieving true superstar status, James Caan is New York-born and bred.
He was born in the Bronx, to Sophie (Falkenstein) and Arthur Caan, Jewish immigrants from Germany. His father was a meat dealer and butcher. The athletically gifted Caan played football at Michigan State University while studying economics, holds a black belt in karate and for several years was even a regular on the rodeo circuit, where he was nicknamed "The Jewish Cowboy". However, while studying at Hofstra University, he became intrigued by acting and was interviewed and accepted at Sanford Meisner's Neighborhood Playhouse. He then won a scholarship to study under acting coach Wynn Handman and began to appear in several off-Broadway productions, including "I Roam" and "Mandingo".
He made his screen debut as a sailor in Irma la Douce (1963) and began to impress audiences with his work in Red Line 7000 (1965) and the western El Dorado (1966) alongside John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. Further work followed in Journey to Shiloh (1968) and in the sensitive The Rain People (1969). However, audiences were moved to tears as he put in a heart-rending performance as cancer-stricken Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo in the highly rated made-for-TV film Brian's Song (1971).
With these strong performances under his belt, Francis Ford Coppola then cast him as hot-tempered gangster Santino "Sonny" Corleone in the Mafia epic The Godfather (1972). The film was an enormous success, Caan scored a Best Supporting Actor nomination and, in the years since, the role has proven to be the one most fondly remembered by his legion of fans. He reprised the role for several flashback scenes in the sequel The Godfather Part II (1974) and then moved on to several very diverse projects. These included a cop-buddy crime partnership with Alan Arkin in the uneven Freebie and the Bean (1974), a superb performance as a man playing for his life in The Gambler (1974) alongside Lauren Hutton, and pairing with Barbra Streisand in Funny Lady (1975). Two further strong lead roles came up for him in 1975, first as futuristic sports star "Jonathon E" questioning the moral fiber of a sterile society in Rollerball (1975) and teaming up with Robert Duvall in the Sam Peckinpah spy thriller The Killer Elite (1975).
Unfortunately, Caan's rising star sputtered badly at this stage of his career, and several film projects failed to find fire with either critics or audiences. These included such failures as the hokey Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976), the quasi-western Comes a Horseman (1978) and the saccharine Chapter Two (1979). However, he did score again with the stylish Michael Mann-directed heist movie Thief (1981). He followed this with a supernatural romantic comedy titled Kiss Me Goodbye (1982) and then, due to personal conflicts, dropped out of the spotlight for several years before returning with a stellar performance under old friend Francis Ford Coppola in the moving Gardens of Stone (1987).
Caan appeared back in favor with fans and critics alike and raised his visibility with the sci-fi hit Alien Nation (1988) and Dick Tracy (1990), then surprised everyone by playing a meek romance novelist held captive after a car accident by a deranged fan in the dynamic Misery (1990). The 1990s were kind to him and he notched up roles as a band leader in For the Boys (1991), another gangster in Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), appeared in the indie hit Bottle Rocket (1996) and pursued Arnold Schwarzenegger in Eraser (1996).
The demand on Caan's talents seems to have increased steadily over the past few years as he is making himself known to a new generation of fans. Recent hot onscreen roles have included The Yards (2000), City of Ghosts (2002) and Dogville (2003). In addition, he finds himself at the helm of the hit TV series Las Vegas (2003) as casino security chief "Big Ed" Deline. An actor of undeniably manly appeal, James Caan continued to surprise and delight audiences with his invigorating performances up until his death in July 2022 at the age of 82.Gosuku-Ryu Karate (6th Dan)

William Washington has worked in the motion picture industry for 30-plus years and counts among his credits over 400 Film projects. Television Shows, Commercials, and Music Videos. Washington's career began when he was hired as a stuntman on the feature film "Marked for Death", starring Steven Segal in 1989. He continued working as a stuntman for 4 years, during which time, he became one of Hollywood's go-to African American stuntmen, frequently working with Terry Leonard, one of the most celebrated Stunt Coordinators of the time. Washington's curiosity on set, where he had the opportunity to interact with and learn about every department, exposed him to the various aspects of filmmaking. It was through such interaction that he gained his first opportunity as Stunt Coordinator on the multi-award-winning feature film "What's Love Got to Do with It", directed by Brian Gibson, starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. In 2008, Washington tried his hand at producing and directing "House Arrest", his first feature film, starring Stacey Dash and The Game. Given its limited budget, there were many challenges, all of which Washington was able to overcome through critical problem-solving. On January 1, 2013, Washington's tenacity and love for filmmaking culminated in a distribution deal with Grindstone Entertainment Group for "Theatrical Release", which he also directed and produced. In addition to his interests on set, Washington developed an interest in the development stage of projects, particularly in screenwriting. He has developed several screenplays, including some of which are under consideration by investment groups for financing, namely "Bad Adaptation", "Fight of Glory", "Jolted", "The Showdown", "Ice", " Showtime Borders", and the television series, "Retribution". Allen Keng began his journey into the world of martial arts at the early age of seven. Unfortunately for Allen, his Karate instructor was mean and made him cry, and he vowed never to go back. Years passed and Allen rediscovered martial arts through the legendary Bruce Lee, who portrayed a Chinese Hero with not only the brawn, but the brains to back it up. Allen was intrigued with Lee's philosophies and took a deep interest in not only martial arts, but the philosophy of martial arts. From that point forward Allen began training in various disciplines including Mantis Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and Wu Shu.
His thirst for martial arts was unquenchable, finding inspiration from the likes of David Carradine, Jean Claude Van Dam, Chuck Norris, Jet Li, and of course, Jackie Chan. He expanded his training into gymnastics as well and learned how to move his body in ways he only dreamed of.
He continued his training in hopes of achieving the level of excellence of his idols and secretly hoping to one day make his mark in the world.
It was not till his second last year of high school that Allen discovered the world of acting. He took his first drama class and was hooked. He was able to convey so many things on stage that he could never dare to say/do in life, for Allen it was a forum where he could express his inner most thoughts and feelings live through a character. He continued his acting career in university where he was accepted to the University College Drama Program at the University of Toronto.
