Captured Me on the First Viewing
This list is very personal to me. Not every movie that I rated good is included in this list, only those which affected me greatly upon first viewing is included. I also try to add a bit of background story on why I chose the movies.

- DirectorHenri-Georges ClouzotStarsSimone SignoretVéra ClouzotPaul MeurisseThe wife and mistress of a loathed school principal plan to murder him with what they believe is the perfect alibi.Europe on Screen 2013 was the year they honored H.G. Clouzot. I watched this at some art school in FX. I was late to the screening as the auditorium (more like your typical classroom honestly) was already dark, but they were just playing the commercials. I sat on the most left front chair of the room, near the door. The movie itself was an experience I'd even call "revelation." I had exposed myself to Psycho before and I thought it was a great movie, however, Diabolique was beyond awesome. The thing that Psycho did was a surprise at the ending, but Diabolique took its time very cleverly so the building to the climax was very superb. I was sitting on the edge of my chair quite literally while my heart was pounding excessively. The movie was and is so thrilling. I think the movie deserves Psycho's place as classic horror movie.
- DirectorTarsem SinghStarsLee PaceCatinca UntaruJustine WaddellIn 1920s Los Angeles, a bedridden patient in a hospital captivates a young girl with a fantastic tale of heroes, myths, and villains on a desert island.I watched this movie twice on Blitz Megaplex Grand Indonesia and there were never days that I wish I could watch it in theater five times at minimum. The visual of the movie is very breath-taking. It was shot in more than 20 countries. One of them is Indonesia so it adds more of the personal meaning. The Fall is also the reason I fell in love with Eiko Ishioka and more importantly, India. I have been dying to visit Jodhpur ever since. Finally, I am deeply grateful for Hafi, Edotchi, Dhani, and Michi who invited me to go with them watching this movie even though I was not that close to them at that time during my final year of high school (we went to the theater straight after school, still with uniform and everything haha). In addition, I feel somehow proud of myself that I had discovered Lee Pace in this movie way before mainstream public know him as Thranduil ;P
- DirectorJemaine ClementTaika WaititiStarsJemaine ClementTaika WaititiCori Gonzalez-MacuerViago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are struggling with the mundane aspects of modern life, like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.Maybe this is the most recent movie (as of September 30, 2016) that has great impact for me. I have watched many movies compared to my friends' standard, I also have forgotten many movies along the line. When you have watched so many movies, you tend to put higher expectation than normal people would. "Been there, done that", as if nothing really interests you anymore. Cliches are becoming harder to avoid. Even movies with twists are already so predictable. In addition, I have quite different sense of humor from other people. Something they find funny is most likely to be not funny according to me. And came along this movie...this is so fresh and hilarious. I went gaga immediately after watching it. I would replay the same scenes over and over again and I will still laugh at it. Incredible.
- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsKenji MizuhashiYoshimi KondouSatomi HanamuraTold in three interconnected segments, Takaki tells the story of his life as cruel winters, cold technology, and finally, adult obligations and responsibility converge to test the delicate petals of love. This was my first contact with the magnificent Makoto Shinkai. Okay, no, that's a lie. His movie that I first watched was The Place Promised in Our Early Days, but 5 cm/s came very shortly after, like half an hour after I watched the former. It was on an event called Jak Japan Matsuri. In Jakarta we often have a Japan fair and this one is quite big. The finale always takes place in Monas (National Monument), but on that year edition, they also screened Japanese movies in Blitz Megaplex Grand Indonesia (something they didn't do in the following years). I am not quite sure now on what pushed me to watch those movies, but oh boy, I am glad I did. It was the first anime movie that I felt I can relate in so many levels. I cried of course, as it reminded me of myself and this high school boy I once liked I swore I would wait for him.
- DirectorStephen SommersStarsBrendan FraserRachel WeiszJohn HannahAt an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hamunaptra, an American serving in the French Foreign Legion accidentally awakens a mummy who begins to wreak havoc as he searches for the reincarnation of his long-lost love.A guilty pleasure movie for other people, but this is a great horror/comedy before Shaun of the Dead came into play. Many smart witty quotes and the fact that I love ancient Egypt to begin with. This movie also makes me a fan of both main actors, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. I watched it first on TV circa fifth grade. The movie itself is not (and definitely WAS NOT!) that scary actually, but it left me with this lingering feeling so I could not fall asleep easily for the next three days. I even had a circle of friends who liked horror movies and we three used aliases and naturally, I chose Evelyn Carnahan :)
- DirectorHideo NakataStarsNanako MatsushimaMiki NakataniYûko TakeuchiA reporter and her ex-husband investigate a cursed video tape that is rumored to kill the viewer seven days after watching it.This is another blast from the past actually. I first watched it when I was a kid, maybe on TV too (or DVD, I cannot remember) and it made me feel almost the same way like the Mummy. I couldn't sleep for three days, but this was because I was genuinely scared. Sadako was very terrifying and my favorite (?) scene on the video is when Sadako's mother combs her hair in front of the mirror and the camera slowly reveals what is behind her. Gee, recalling this even gets me the shiver.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsGerard ButlerLena HeadeyDavid WenhamIn the ancient battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fight against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. They face insurmountable odds when they are betrayed by a Spartan reject. It was love at first sight seeing Rodrigo Santoro's black and white close up picture on 300 preview in an Indonesian movie magazine, Cinemags. I wasn't that interested in the story when I read the synopsis, but I am glad I decided to watch it on the big screen. I then fell in love with the stark contrast of the color, the dramatic narration, and ultimately the slow motion and gripping action scenes. I can even remember my second viewing was on the TV of the back of my then car, a cream Suzuki APV. I was only a tenth grader back then.
