- DirectorAndrew StantonAngus MacLaneStarsEllen DeGeneresAlbert BrooksEd O'NeillFriendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.Pushing through any accusations of it being unnecessary, Finding Dory is a wonderful continuation of a great story, focusing on one of the most endearing animated characters thus far with a heavy dose of jokes, jaw-dropping animation, and a lovely pro-disability message.
- DirectorMichael ShowalterStarsSally FieldMax GreenfieldTyne DalyA self-help seminar inspires a sixty-something woman to romantically pursue her younger co-worker.A completely hidden gem, Hello My Name is Doris is so much fun, taking advantage of Sally Field's best performance in years to deliver a magically bittersweet story of embracing sexuality in your elderly years thanks to an unendingly witty script and full-rounded characters.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks. While maybe not the all-out game changer for the superhero genre it was hyped up to be, Deadpool is a hilarious, crude, thrilling, and flat-out fun little caper that is refreshingly contained and bleeds love and persistence, thanks mostly to its perfectly cast star and a creative team working to achieve a singular vision.
- DirectorDenzel WashingtonStarsDenzel WashingtonViola DavisStephen McKinley HendersonA working-class African-American father tries to raise his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life.Sacrificing cinematic expansion is a small price to pay for the two gargantuan performances Denzel Washington and Viola Davis give us in Fences, a provocative, relevant character study that retains its power to this day.
- DirectorByron HowardRich MooreJared BushStarsGinnifer GoodwinJason BatemanIdris ElbaIn a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy. While I wouldn't necessarily call it subtle, Zootopia is absolutely the perfect movie to fight against our current political climate, delivering a lovely message of tolerance in addition to a fun mystery, clever characters, and impeccable world-building.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsNeel SethiBill MurrayBen KingsleyAfter a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther Bagheera and free-spirited bear Baloo.A true feat of visual storytelling, The Jungle Book finally affirms that Disney's decision to remake all its classics in live action form is a good idea, updating the story and filling in the empty spaces, creating a special effects marvel that sets a new standard for CGI.
- DirectorJosh KriegmanElyse SteinbergStarsAnthony WeinerHuma AbedinJordan Zain WeinerAn examination of disgraced New York Congressman Anthony Weiner's mayoral campaign and today's political landscape.Probing and scathing, yet oddly sympathetic at times, Weiner is a Shakespearean tragedy documenting the downfall of a well-intentioned man who just can't seem to get out of his own way, making it fascinating to watch him crash and burn.
- DirectorMike BirbigliaStarsKeegan-Michael KeyGillian JacobsMike BirbigliaWhen a member of a popular New York City improv troupe gets a huge break, the rest of the group - all best friends - start to realize that not everyone is going to make it after all.An inviting look into the surprisingly vicious world of stand up and improv, Don't Think Twice is a hilarious, melancholy, and wholly realistic in its pursuit of success and the relationships we make with people chasing the same dreams as us.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsStephen LangJane LevyDylan MinnetteHoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems.Nail-bitingly tense, surprisingly clever, and packed with delicious twists and turns, Don't Breathe is a rather thought-provoking and stylish thriller that chills, thrills, and lingers in the mind long after it's done.
- DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsTilda SwintonMatthias SchoenaertsRalph FiennesA famous rock star's vacation in Italy with her boyfriend is disrupted by the unexpected visit of an old friend and his daughter.Sexy, creepy, and all-around crazy, A Bigger Splash is a psychological tale that features four of the best actors working today going all out on a bunch of meaty roles making it impossible to look away, even in those rare instances when they're clothed.
- DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsJohn GoodmanMary Elizabeth WinsteadJohn Gallagher Jr.A young woman is held in an underground bunker by a man who insists that a hostile event has left the surface of the Earth uninhabitable. While I really kinda didn't like the finale, it was a bit superfluous, but leading up that is 10 Cloverfield Lane, one of the most chilling, claustrophobic thriller we've seen in years thanks to haunting direction, nerve-shredding suspense, and bravura performances from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and especially John Goodman, who might give the best turn of his career.
- DirectorKaryn KusamaStarsLogan Marshall-GreenEmayatzy CorinealdiMichiel HuismanWhen a man accepts an invitation to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife, the unsettling past reopens old wounds and creates new tensions.Slow-burning, but painfully involving, The invitation is a deliriously creepy psychological drama that keeps you guessing all the way up to its absolutely terrifying final shot.
- DirectorTom FordStarsAmy AdamsJake GyllenhaalMichael ShannonA wealthy art gallery owner is haunted by her ex-husband's novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a symbolic revenge tale. While it doesn't all quite come together in the way Ford probably hoped, and is certainly too ambiguous for its own good, Nocturnal Animals is still a taut, visually slavish thriller with powerful performances, plenty of twists and turns, and sly social commentary proving that Ford is still an essential cinematic voice.
- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsJohn Gallagher Jr.Kate SiegelMichael TruccoA deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window.A clever concept is put to solid, if not revolutionary use in Hush, a creepy home-invasion thriller from the mind of modern horror master Mike Flanagan that is great for a scary night in.
- DirectorStephen FrearsStarsMeryl StreepHugh GrantSimon HelbergThe story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice. It's tone is all over the place, constantly wavering between feeling sorry for and making fun of its protagonist, but Florence Foster Jenkins is a heartfelt, funny, and wholly feel-good dramedy that features whimsical visuals, handsome production design, and stellar performances from a lovely cast, particularly Hugh Grant.
- DirectorNicholas StollerStarsSeth RogenRose ByrneZac EfronWhen their new next-door neighbors turn out to be a sorority even more debaucherous than the fraternity that lived there before, Mac and Kelly team with their former enemy, Teddy, to bring the girls down.A remarkably fine sequel, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising recycles jokes, but manages to be just as, if not more, entertaining and hilarious as its predecessor.
- DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsColin FarrellRachel WeiszJessica BardenIn a dystopian near future, according to the laws of The City, single people are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in 45 days or they're transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.Thrillingly original and ambitious, The Lobster doesn't fully realize its impressive vision, but it is still an astonishingly conceptualized dystopian romance that succeeds due to some of the best deadpan humor in awhile and lovely commentary about modern relationships.
- DirectorJon LucasScott MooreStarsMila KunisKathryn HahnKristen BellWhen three overworked and under-appreciated moms are pushed beyond their limits, they ditch their conventional responsibilities for a jolt of long overdue freedom, fun and comedic self-indulgence.It could've been a little darker and biting with its satire, but Bad Moms is still a breezy, raunchy comedy that showcases some terrifically funny women and gives loads of franchise potential.
- DirectorJeremy SaulnierStarsAnton YelchinImogen PootsAlia ShawkatA punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar. There are moments of pure, nerve-shredding tension in Green Room, though not really enough to sustain an entire film, but there is a gritty realism to the direction that makes it seem entirely plausible, and in turn, very scary.
- DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsJosh BrolinGeorge ClooneyAlden EhrenreichA Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio's stars in line.Though certainly not up to par with some of their heftier efforts, Hail, Caesar! is still a fluffy, entertaining, and very funny Coen Brothers effort that succeeds thanks to loving homages to film, some ridiculous screwball humor, and a cast having a great time, especially a breakout performance from Alden Ehrenreich.
- DirectorRobert EggersStarsAnya Taylor-JoyRalph InesonKate DickieA family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession. While I'm certainly not one of the ones who says it isn't "scary" enough, I will admit The Witch is not fully there, lacking some suspense and logic in areas, but it is still an intensely creepy affair with some horrific imagery, painstaking period accuracy, and an unbearable atmosphere.
- DirectorConrad VernonGreg TiernanStarsSeth RogenKristen WiigJonah HillA sausage leads a group of supermarket products on a journey to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they are picked off the shelf. It could've been a lot smarter in the kind of humor it went for, not realizing that just saying f-words in an animated film wasn't really enough, but Sausage Party makes up for it in plot and ideas, executing a very ambitious religious allegory with surprising nuance and intelligence, as well as some truly outrageous humor.
- DirectorPaul FeigStarsMelissa McCarthyKristen WiigKate McKinnonFollowing a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.Wholly unnecessary, fairly witless, and honestly not very funny, Ghostbusters is a perfectly fine film not at all deserving of the negative attention it got, or any attention at all really, serving as a fine-ish start to a doomed franchise with some pretty funny moments, a star-making turn from Kate McKinnon, and an admirable sense of fun.
- DirectorAva DuVernayStarsMelina AbdullahMichelle AlexanderCory BookerAn in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals the nation's history of racial inequality. It certainly has some dull stretches and is surprisingly not particularly rousing, but with 13th, Ava DuVarney has crafted a powerful, tragically timely documentary that informs as much as it infuriates.
- DirectorJake SzymanskiStarsZac EfronAdam DevineAnna KendrickTwo hard-partying brothers place an online ad to find the perfect dates for their sister's Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves out-hustled by an uncontrollable duo.The humor is pedestrian and played out, but Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates rises on its seriously impressive cast, with everyone doing superlative work, with this especially serving as yet another shining example of Aubrey Plaza's immeasurable talent.
- DirectorAkiva SchafferJorma TacconeStarsAndy SambergJorma TacconeAkiva SchafferWhen it becomes clear that his solo album is a failure, a former boy band member does everything in his power to maintain his celebrity status.Criminally underseen, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is so much fun that it's lack of originality and substance doesn't matter, thanks to some sharp entertainment satire, infectiously funny songs, and a terrific starring turn from Andy Samberg.
- DirectorRon ClementsJohn MuskerDon HallStarsAuli'i CravalhoDwayne JohnsonRachel HouseIn ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out Maui to set things right.Reasonably diverting, though undeniably slight, Moana is a perfectly serviceable Disney film that manages to sidestep a few cliches and create one of the stronger female leads we've seen in awhile, despite an overlong running time, subpar music, and pedestrian storytelling.
- DirectorJohn HamburgStarsZoey DeutchJames FrancoTangie AmbroseA holiday gathering threatens to go off the rails when Ned Fleming realizes that his daughter's Silicon Valley millionaire boyfriend is about to pop the question. It certainly caters to the lowest common denominator, but Why Him? still manages to be a pleasantly serviceable comedy that offers laughs and takes advantage of a great cast.
- DirectorJosh GordonWill SpeckStarsJason BatemanOlivia MunnT.J. MillerWhen his uptight CEO sister threatens to shut down his branch, the branch manager throws an epic Christmas party in order to land a big client and save the day, but the party gets way out of hand...It has its moments, particularly from the smaller characters and subplots, but Office Christmas Party is a relatively tame and unmemorable affair that wastes a comedy dream-team of a cast.
- DirectorDavid MackenzieStarsChris PineBen FosterJeff BridgesToby is a divorced father who's trying to make a better life. His brother is an ex-con with a short temper and a loose trigger finger. Together, they plan a series of heists against the bank that's about to foreclose on their family ranch. It's certainly timely, and features a stellar performance from Chris Pine and some stunning cinematography, but Hell or High Water is a pretty weak Coen Bros. knockoff that moves at a lugubrious pace and isn't nearly as meaningful as it thinks it is.
- DirectorBen FalconeStarsMelissa McCarthyKristen BellPeter DinklageA titan of industry is sent to prison after she's caught insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America's latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.Paul Feig is the only person who can direct Melissa McCarthy in starring vehicles, it seems, because The Boss is yet another misfire in the vein of Tammy that features no great jokes, only further showcase of how much potential McCarthy has when steered in the right direction.
- DirectorPeter AtencioStarsKeegan-Michael KeyJordan PeeleTiffany HaddishWhen the adorable kitten of an L.A. crime kingpin unexpectedly enters the life of two cousins, they will have to go through tough gangs, pitiless hit-men, and ruthless drug dealers who all claim him, to get him back. How hard can it be?There are flashes of the brilliance of Key and Peele in Keanu, but there was clearly some difficulty translating that into a feature film with too much riffing and not enough plot, though the cat was truly adorable.
- DirectorTate TaylorStarsEmily BluntHaley BennettRebecca FergusonA divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life.Despite a truly outstanding, potentially career-best performance from Emily Blunt, The Girl on the Train is a sloppy, suspense-free, self-serious, overly-stylized thriller that doesn't really thrill and shows the inexperience of Tate Taylor to handle this kind of material.
- DirectorEwan McGregorStarsEwan McGregorJennifer ConnellyDakota FanningAn All-American college star and his beauty queen wife watch their seemingly perfect life fall apart as their daughter joins the turmoil of '60s America.Admirably ambitious, but way too overreaching, American Pastoral finds Ewan McGregor wholly misstepping his directorial debut with a thin adaptation of a dense novel, eschewing hefty ideas for heavy melodrama, poor performances, and pedestrian direction.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsElle FanningChristina HendricksKeanu ReevesAn aspiring model, Jesse, is new to Los Angeles. However, her beauty and youth, which generate intense fascination and jealousy within the fashion industry, may prove themselves sinister. It looks pretty, that's for sure, but there's virtually no substance in The Neon Demon, which takes a potential-packed premise, and squanders it on pretty stylish imagery and gore, despite some committed performances from Jena Malone and Abbey Lee.
- DirectorDavid AyerStarsWill SmithJared LetoMargot RobbieA secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse.Sloppy, poorly put together, scored to a dumb soundtrack, with the entire runtime devoted to introducing the characters in lieu of any actual character development, and a totally generic plot, Suicide Squad is a crushing disappointment, which, if it weren't for a DOPE performance from Margot Robbie, would be a complete waste of time.
- DirectorAdam WingardStarsJames Allen McCuneCallie HernandezCorbin ReidAfter discovering a video showing what he believes to be his vanished sister Heather, James and a group of friends head to the forest believed to be inhabited by the Blair Witch.Basically copying the original without adding anything new except overexplaining things that didn't need to be explained, Blair Witch is a sorely missed opportunity that is basically interchangeable from any other schlocky found footage film of the past decade.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsBen AffleckHenry CavillAmy AdamsBatman is manipulated by Lex Luthor to fear Superman. Superman´s existence is meanwhile dividing the world and he is framed for murder during an international crisis. The heroes clash and force the neutral Wonder Woman to reemerge. So, so, sloppy and nonsensical, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fails on just about every level imaginable, bringing nothing new except grandiosity and CGI blubber.
