Pola Negri was born in Lipno, Poland, and moved to Warsaw as a child. Living in poverty with her mother, a teenage Pola auditioned and was accepted to the Imperial Ballet. Due to an illness that ended her dancing career, she soon switched to the Warsaw Imperial Academy of Dramatic Arts and became an actress. By 17 she was a star on the Warsaw stage, but World War I would soon change the theater scene. Without the theater, Pola turned to films. With her new career in pictures and her stage success in "Sumurun", she went to Berlin and was teamed with German director Ernst Lubitsch. The Lubitsch-Negri combination was very successful and the roles that Pola played were earthy, exotic, strong women. One of her films, Passion (1919), was optioned and retitled "Passion" for exhibition in America. The film was such a success that by 1922 she and Lubitsch were both given contracts to work in Hollywood. While her first few films showed some success, they were overshadowed by her reported romances with such stars as Charles Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino. Forbidden Paradise (1924), made with Lubitsch, and Hotel Imperial (1927) were two of her more successful films. However, three things conspired to end her career in Hollywood: (1) The perception that her mourning for Rudolph Valentino was insincere, though Negri did describe him as the love of her life; (2) The Hays Office codes that would not allow her to show the very traits that made her a sex-siren in Europe; (3) Her thick Polish accent would not play in the sound pictures that were coming into vogue.
Pola Negri returned to Europe and eventually made films for UFA, which was under Nazi management. In 1941 she returned to America penniless. She made Hi Diddle Diddle (1943) and became an American citizen in 1951. Her next and last movie was The Moon-Spinners (1964).
She died of pneumonia in San Antonio, TX, in 1987.- Ágnes Eszterházy was born on 15 January 1891 in Kolozsvár, Austria-Hungary [now Cluj-Napoca, Romania]. She was an actress, known for The Student of Prague (1926), The Beggar Student (1927) and Marquis d'Eon, der Spion der Pompadour (1928). She was married to Fritz Schulz. She died on 4 April 1956 in Munich, West Germany.

Anny Ondra was a Polish-Czech-Austrian-German-French singer and a film and stage actress. As a child she lived in Prague, where her father was a colonel in the Austro-Hungarian army. After graduating from convent school in Prague, she studied to be an actress with Professor Bor. She was already a star in the Czech theater when, at age 16, the teenage beauty was discovered by the film industry.
From 1920--mostly under the direction of Karel Lamac--she became a major comedic star in Czech cinema, and in 1928 she conquered German cinema. Historically, she was Alfred Hitchcock's first blonde, appearing in his film Blackmail (1929), which was England's--and Hitchcock's--first talking film (Hitchcock, knowing that not all theaters supported talkies, also shot a silent version of the film). In 1930 in Germany she created, with the help of Karel Lamac, the Ondra-Lamac Film Society, which lasted till 1936. She was in Die vom Rummelplatz (1930) ("Those of the Sideshow") but the film, was lost and remains so to this day.
She played in German-, Czech- and French-language versions of all her movies, always as the leading lady. She became an international cinema superstar and one of the most beloved of German film stars. She appeared in more than 88 films. She retired from the industry in 1957 and lived in Hollenstedt in der Lüneburger Heide, Germany (near Hamburg), with her husband, boxing champion Max Schmeling, whom she married in 1933.
She died in Hollenstedt and will never be forgotten by her fans.- Actress

Nevena, born in Dupnitsa on December 12, 1938, is keenly aware of the inequities of the world from a very young age. Her father Bogdan is a military officer in the Kingdom of Bulgaria. When the Communist-led Fatherland Front government takes power in the 40's, it consolidates its victory by persecuting the government and military elite of wartime Bulgaria as "enemies of the people". Her father spends several years in the labor camp. Even after his release, the stigma of being an "enemy's" daughter will haunt her throughout her life. With her family unable to live in Sofia, Nevena spends her childhood in the village of Kumarica, where she draws relentlessly and develops a passion for acting. After being fascinated by tales of a film shoot happening nearby, she is recruited as an extra and given a single line in the 1956 film "Two Victories". The experience is the final push that convinces the 18-year old Economics Institute graduate to audition for the National Institute for Theatrical Art in Sofia. In her audition, she gives a contemporary, unorthodox take on the study "woman sees a mouse in the room", which runs counter to the theatrical dogma of the time. That, possibly coupled with the stain on her father's name, contributes to her rejection. In her moment of discouragement, she received an offer for an apprentice position in the troupe of the country theatre. Nevena begins her stage career with classical ingénue roles, playing a bare-footed Juliet to great acclaim, fascinating critics with her unpolished, organic talent. She is cast in her first major screen role opposite Lyubomir Sharlandziev in the 1957 film "Years of Love". Lyubomir falls in love with her at first sight, and the 19-year old, inexperienced Nevena marries her first on-screen romantic partner. Her husband is not only an actor, he's a director. He directs Nevena in a multitude of plays, first in Gabrovo, then in Ruse, all the while acting as her unofficial acting tutor, constantly honing her skill. The screen adaptation of the novel "Tobacco" is a long and dramatic story. Author Dimitar Dimov is under tremendous pressure to rewrite portions of his work, to soften the impact of the characters within, while director Nikola Korabov has the uneasy task of reducing a 1500-page novel to a 150-page script. Kokanova has been in a few films already and Korabov hopes to have her play Irina, the female lead - a strong, independent, self-aware and ultimately self-destructive character. There is pressure from the Artistic Council of Cinematography to have another actress cast. Nevena is young, inexperienced, unschooled, provincial, and an undesirable to the Communist Party, which at the time exerts a tremendous amount of censorship and influence over anything produced in the country. There is even talk of bringing in a foreign actress to play Irina, but Dimov is against it. In the end, despite a tremendous amount of difficulty and at great risk to his career, Korabov secures Kokanova for the role. She has reservations herself, feeling unequal to the task of filling the shoes of the strong and experienced literary character that is Irina, but she is made for the screen and she becomes more confident with every shooting day that passes. "Tobacco" is presented at Cannes in 1963, with giants such as Federico Fellini, Alfred Hitchcock, Gregory Peck and Burt Lancaster in attendance. French poet Andre Morois kisses her hand on the red carper with the words "You affected me!" The criticism and envy leveled at her is quelled. The tremendous success of "Tobacco" makes her a household name in Bulgaria. Her second iconic film role will be anything but effortless. Vulo Radev, having been director of photography in several of her films, makes his directorial debut with a film version of Emilian Stanev's novel "The Peach-Garden Trespasser". Set just after WWI, the film is about a Serbian prisoner of war who sneaks into a Bulgarian colonel's private garden, meeting his wife there by chance and starting a torrid love affair with her. Nevena's beauty and her recent success fan the flames of envy and Radev has to put his reputation on the line and assume a tremendous financial risk to cast her. Moreover, she is in the middle of a theatrical engagement in the Satirical theatre in Sofia under director Metodi Andonov, at the same time that she is desperately needed to film "The Peach-Garden Trespasser" in Veliko Tarnovo. With Andonov's help, Kokanova manages to shoot for the film while still performing nightly in Sofia. Despite the tremendous risk of her being fired from the theatre, she is driven by car to Veliko Tarnovo (some 4 hours) after every performance in Sofia. She is filming until noon the following day, when she is driven back to be on stage again at 8 pm. Needless to say, this puts a tremendous physical strain on the young actress, who has very little time for sleep. By the end of the 60's, Kokanova is the most prolific Bulgarian film actress and a fashion icon. She's offered four roles in East Germany and accepts a terrific role in Italian director Liliana Cavani's "Galileo" in 1969. The next decade, spent on stage and on screen, is a happy one for Kokanova, resulting in some of her best work. She appears in films such as "The Boy Turns Man" (1972) opposite Filip Trifonov, "The Weddings of King Ioan Asen" (1975), the last film appearance of Apostol Karamitev and "Ladies' Choice") (1980), an ensemble comedy alongside Stefan Danailov, Tzvetana Maneva, Doroteya Toncheva and Maria Statulova. However, this decade ends with a crushing blow. In July of 1979, while directing "Three Deadly Sins", her husband Lyubomir dies of a heart attack. Devastated, she occupies herself with caring for their daughter Teodora and completes the film in his stead. In the stagnation and standstill that descends on the arts after the fall of Communism in 1989, and without any work prospects, she retreats to a village in the Balkan Mountains, rebuilding a small cottage and claiming sanctuary there. Kokanova continues to act, marking a belated 60th birthday in 1999 with a performance in the theatre "Revival". Days later, she is honored in the Hall of Cinema by a concert in her honor. Highlight reels of her great movie roles are shown and toasts are made to her health. Unbeknownst to everyone except her, these toasts are futile. She has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer several years earlier. By the end of 1999, she is a shadow of her former self, but ready to face her final challenge, her ultimate role, with grace and resolve. Nevena Kokanova, the radiant, lovely, loved, irreplaceable first lady of Bulgarian cinema, died on June 3, 2000 at the age of 62, immortalized on the silver screen and in the heart of a nation.- Ida Kaminska was born on 4 September 1899 in Odessa, Kherson Governorate, Russian Empire [now Ukraine]. She was an actress, known for The Shop on Main Street (1965), Tkies khaf (1924) and On a heym (1939). She was married to Marian Melman and Zygmunt Turkow. She died on 21 May 1980 in New York City, New York, USA.

She is an actress, known for Seven Years in Tibet (1997), Mission: Impossible (1996) and Hannibal Rising (2007).- Maia Morgenstern is a Romanian film and stage actress, described by Florin Mitu of AMOS News as "a symbol of Romanian theater and film." In the English-speaking world, she is probably best known for the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. In Romania, she has been nationally known since her 1992 role as Nela in Balanta, a film known in the United States as The Oak, set during the waning days of Communist Romania.
Born in Bucharest, in a Jewish family, she graduated from the Film and Theatre Academy of Bucharest in 1985. She then played at Teatrul Tineretului (Youth Theater) in Piatra Neamt; until 1988, and at the Teatrul Evreiesc de Stat (State Jewish Theatre) in Bucharest 1988-1990. From 1990-1998 she was a member of the company of the National Theatre in Bucharest, and since 1998 of Teatrul Bulandra, also in Bucharest; in addition, she continues to act at the State Jewish Theatre and other Bucharest theaters and elsewhere in Romania. Among her notable stage roles in recent years, in a Romanian-language production of The Blue Angel (Ingerul Albastru in Romanian) at Bucharest's Odeon Theater, in 2001-2002 she played (to great critical acclaim) Lola Lola, the character made famous by Marlene Dietrich. At the same time, she was also playing the role of Kathleen Hogan in a Romanian-language production of Israel Horovitz's Park Your Car in Harvard Yard at the State Jewish Theater.
Morgenstern has appeared in numerous films, primarily in Hungarian and Romanian-language roles. In The Passion of the Christ, she performs a role in Aramaic, but like the other actors in the cast of that film, she simply memorized her lines phonetically.
Her surname, Morgenstern, means "Morning Star" in German, a title of the Virgin Mary, the character she played in The Passion of the Christ. Mel Gibson, a devout Traditionalist Catholic, thought this of great significance when casting her. In interviews, she has defended The Passion against allegations of anti-Semitism, saying that the high priest Caiaphas is portrayed not as a representative of the Jewish people, but as a leader of the establishment, adding that "Authorities throughout history have persecuted individuals with revolutionary ideas."
She has been married twice, and has 3 children: Tudor Aaron, Eva Leea Cabiria and Ana Isadora. - Mirjana Jokovic was born on 24 November 1967 in Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia. She studied drama and music and, at 17, was discovered by a Swedish film director who cast her in the movie Ingen kan älska som vi (1988), which made her a local teen idol. Returning to acting in 1994, she immediately won the lead role in the Swedish film The Tears of Saint Peter (1995). Scorupco stars as a woman who lives her life as a man in the medieval drama, which was released in August 1995.

Ioana Flora was born on March 22, 1975 in Pancevo, Serbia. She is the daughter of Ioan Flora, a poet, philologist and pedagogue. Appearing in films, on television and on stage, she debuted in acclaimed Romanian director Cristi Puiu's Stuff and Dough/Marfa si banii, where she starred alongside Dragos Bucur and Alexandru Papadopol. It was the first Romanian picture selected for the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs program at Cannes in 2001 and was credited with starting the New Wave of Romanian cinema.
Recently, Ioana played the female lead in The Christmas Gift/Cadoul de Craciun, a short feature that is among the 10 live action shorts shortlisted for the 2020 Academy Awards. Directed by Bogdan Muresanu, the short film also received the Best Short Movie award at the European Film Awards in 2019.
She is a critical darling, with both Romanian and international film critics heaping praise and accolades on her for being "an intense and instinctive artist - who always captures nuances with amazing precision and burns on the inside while acting, insofar as she can carry a whole film by herself."
Ioana graduated acting with a BA from the National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest, in 1997, and attended the Architecture High School in Novi Sad, Serbia before that. She studied piano and classical ballet and speaks fluent Romanian, Serbian and English.
Ioana's filmography counts as many as 25 national and international productions, both in cinema and TV, and she was the recipient of one of the most valued distinctions in the international film industry - the Best Actress Award that she won at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in 2008, for Adrian Sitaru's Hooked.
Her next movie role was in Outbound (2009), directed by Bogdan George Apetri, a film that was screened and awarded at important international festivals, most notably the Locarno Film Festival (Official Selection) and the Warsaw Film Festival, in 2010, where it won both the FIPRESCI and the Special Jury Prizes. For her part in the movie, Ioana received the Best Supporting Actress award at the Gopos in 2012, and was named "Artist of the Year" by Pro Cinema.
In 2010 she appeared in Bora Bora, directed by acclaimed director Bogdan Mirica, recipient of the FIPRESCI award in Cannes, in 2016, for Dogs.
An actress who some critics describe as being possessed of untold depths and a simmering strength that can explode at any point, Ioana was also one of the 20 actors chosen out of 4300 applicants, to take part in the Talent Actors Stage programme at Berlin IFF in 2012.
In 2012, director Adrian Sitaru offered her one of the leading roles in his movie, Domestic.
A very difficult role that earned her the Romanian Film Union Award (UCIN) for best female performance, in 2013, was the one from Déjà vu, an independent production directed by Dan Chisu. It is also worth noting that the jury of the Gala voted unanimously for Ioana Flora.
The actress then intricately molded yet another disturbing character in the Dutch-Romanian co-production A Long Story / Marea Neagra, a drama directed by Jorien Van Nes that was well received by the international film industry. For her part in the film, premiering in 2013, at the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht, Ioana got the Best Actress Award the following year, at the International Film Festival in Aubagne, France.
For her next role, Paula, in Andrei Cohn's debut film Back Home / Acasa la tata, Ioana received her second Best Actress Award at the Gopos in 2016, as well as her second UCIN Prize. Back Home opened the European Film festival that year. That same year, Ioana appeared in One floor below/Un etaj mai jos, directed by Radu Muntean, a film that, once again, put Romanian cinema on the map when it was featured in the Official Cannes 2015 Selection, Un Certain regard.
Her next role was in the independent short, Tie/Scor alb, directed by Marius Olteanu. The film had its international premiere at the Busan Film festival, in competition.
Ioana's most recent on-screen performance was in the acclaimed short The Christmas Gift/Cadoul de Craciun, Bogdan's Muresanu debut film, that was shortlisted by the American Film Academy for the 2020 Oscars nominations for Best Live action short. Honored with 57 awards so far, including the Best Film Award at the Clermont Ferrant and Palm Springs Festivals, The Christmas Gift also took home the European Academy's Best Short Film Award in December 2019, in Berlin. Starring Ioana Flora and Adrian Vancica, the short directed by Bogdan Muresanu was among 9 other films on the short list, out of 191 eligible titles.
At the end of 2019, Ioana finished shooting for Lebensdorf, a feature film directed by Vali Hotea where the type of character she plays is quite different from her usual fare. Other recent productions Ioana stars in are Andrei Gruznitski's Zavera, which premiered at the end of 2019, at the Cairo Film Festival, and two features set to debut this year - Razvan Savescu's Beginning/ Inceput (2018), and Ruxandra Ghitescu's Otto the Barbarian/Otto barbarul (2018).
Of the series and TV films Ioana starred in, the most noteworthy are The Madness of Henry VIII docudrama, which aired on National Geographic, L'homme pressé, produced by TV France and directed by Sébastien Grall (2005), Good fellas/Baieti buni, an innovative police series for the Romanian market at the time (2003), which aired on PRO TV, Donau, Duna, Dunav, Dunarea, directed by Goran Rebic - a German-Austrian-Serbian-Romanian co-production - Poor man, rich man/Om sarac, om bogat, directed by Peter Kerek and broadcast by PRO TV, and the period TV series Aniela (2010), as well as made-for-TV films produced by Acasa TV, in 2010.
She made her theatre debut in Piatra Neamt, playing lead roles in Vlad Mugur's productions, and has been playing in state theatres, as well as in independent and nonconventional spaces ever since. She is currently playing Beatrice in a new production of Shakespeare's Much ado about nothing/Mult zgomot pentru nimic, directed by world-renowned director Andrei Serban.
When she's not acting, Ioana is directing and organizing performances for and with underprivileged children, teaching acting, public speaking and communication, as well as translating plays.- Maria Dragus was born in 1994 in Romania.
