- DirectorMichael E. BriantStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvetteMichael KeatingFormer resistance leader Roj Blake witnesses a massacre and is subsequently framed for a series of fictional crimes by the totalitarian Federation.A well-realized, albeit derivative, cynical vision of the future. It carries a sense of paranoia and darkness throughout, making we the audience sympathetic towards Blake and the situation he is put through. The villains in this episode feel a lot more grounded and reserved as opposed to the more campy villains of Travis and Servalan later on in the series, making the Federation much more frightening.
- DirectorPennant RobertsStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvettePaul DarrowBlake attempts to take over the prison transport ship London with help from Kerr Avon and Jenna Stannis. When this fails, Blake, Jenna and Avon are sent to investigate an abandoned alien spaceship, where Blake grabs the chance to take control of that ship and escape.
- DirectorVere LorrimerStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvettePaul DarrowBlake, Avon and Jenna follow the transport ship London to the Federation prison planet Cygnus Alpha where Blake teleports to the surface to free the prisoners. But the planet's supreme ruler Vargas wants to take over the Liberator in his goal of total power and conquest of the galaxy.Watching Blake, Jenna, and Avon figure out the Liberator is a lot of fun. Brian Blessed is wonderfully hammy and there is plenty of fun action schlock throughout.
- DirectorVere LorrimerStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvettePaul DarrowSupreme Commander Servalan assigns Federation military officer Space Commander Travis (wounded by Blake) to eliminate Blake and the crew of the Liberator. However, Travis takes Cally captive, when Blake and the crew steal a message decoder from a Federation security base on Centero. This one almost plays like a movie in terms of pacing. A slow build up at the start followed by an exciting climax. It's also a good episode to jump into if you haven't seen the show before.
- DirectorMichael E. BriantStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvettePaul DarrowBlake and Jenna teleport down to evacuate a well-known resistance leader named Avalon, only to find that she was captured by the Federation. The Liberator's crew launch a rescue mission, not realizing that Travis is using Avalon as bait.A fun standalone action story. The highlights here was the climactic prison escape and the various twists and turns the story takes.
- DirectorVere LorrimerStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvettePaul DarrowAfter an attack by two unidentifiable spacecraft, the computers aboard Liberator turn on Blake and his crew through the intervention of the ship's original owners, who are controlled by a massive computer called The System. This was one of the first episodes I ever saw, and it was the episode that made me fall in love with the series. It's fast-paced, exciting, action-packed, and pretty much every character gets a moment to shine. All these elements make this episode one of, if not my all-time favorite.
- DirectorJonathan Wright-MillerStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvettePaul DarrowBlake tries to buy the services of the Terra Nostra organized crime syndicate in his struggle against the Federation. When his first effort fails, he decides to go after their biggest source of profit to gain leverage. That source is an illicit narcotic called shadow. It is here that we start seeing the resistance falling apart. The mission of the week is jeopardized by the group's selfish desires and conflicting ideologies. Even Blake, the closest thing the show has to a clean-cut hero, begins to show signs of obsession and insanity.
- DirectorGeorge Spenton-FosterStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvettePaul DarrowThe Liberator returns to Earth where Blake plans to attack the Federation Central Control computer complex. But Blake's contact, Kasabi and her daughter Veron have been taken prisoner by Servalan and Travis. Blake and Gan teleport to the surface to find Veron while trying to outrun the security devices on the outer perimeter of the Central Control computer complex. What I love about this episode is that it shows that the main heroes are not invincible, and how Blake's ambition has gotten the better of him, and at a great cost.
- DirectorDavid MaloneyStarsGareth ThomasSally KnyvettePaul DarrowBlake leads the apprehensive crew of the Liberator out into intergalactic space to find and destroy Star One and cripple the Federation. What none of them realize is that Star One is already showing signs of sabotage. But since nobody but Blake's crew know the location of Star One, who could be causing it, and why?Amazing finale to the Star One story arc. Paul Darrow and Gareth Thomas truly stand out.
- DirectorVere LorrimerStarsPaul DarrowJan ChappellMichael KeatingThe Liberator crew makes a deal with a outlaw, known as Bayban the Berserker, in order to obtain crystals needed for the Liberator's weapons system. Bayban, in return, requires Vila's help to find a treasure on the distant planet Keezar; and Vila falls in love with Kerril, one of Bayban's gang members.Vila is a fun character, and he gets to take part in a cute little adventure and romance. Also has some of my favorite Avon quips and insults. And plus, Colin Baker!
- DirectorAndrew MorganStarsPaul DarrowJan ChappellMichael KeatingServalan has unleashed a plague on Cally's home planet Auron as a lure for the Liberator and its crew. It works, as Cally receives a telepathic message calling for help and she is compelled to go there. Servalan is also using Auron's advanced technology to create clones in her image; her children, as it were.
- DirectorFiona CummingStarsPaul DarrowJan ChappellMichael KeatingAvon sets out on a personal vendetta to avenge the murder of his lover Anna Grant, killed by the Federation torturer Shrinker. But Avon was deceived, and learns that Anna is alive and she, along with a resistance group, have taken Servalan captive. This is what I love about the Avon era. A story like this probably wouldn't have been possible if Blake was still in command of the Liberator. It loves to play with the show's original concept of the lack of clear-cut heroes and villains. And in the end, nobody really comes out on top.
- DirectorGerald BlakeStarsPaul DarrowJan ChappellMichael KeatingTarrant's elder brother Deeta is competing in a gladiatorial ceremony, where combatants fight each other to the death to settle Interplanetary feuds. Servalan is acting as a judge, but she is manipulating events to trigger a real war.Another standalone adventure. What stands out about this episode is the direction, particularly the scene in the gladiatorial warehouse.
Yes, a gladiatorial warehouse. - DirectorMary RidgeStarsPaul DarrowJan ChappellMichael KeatingAfter Avon receives mysterious instructions, he, for reasons he will not share with the others, is determined to follow them. They bring the Liberator to the artificial planet Terminal, passing through a cloud of fluid particles on the way. Avon goes down to the surface and finds Blake, connected to a life support system, and Servalan, who is holding him captive. While they negotiate the release of Blake in exchange for the Liberator, the fluid particles start eating away at the ship.An exciting ending to the third season. It puts much emphasis on the fact that the greatest threat to the Resistance is the Resistance itself. It probably would have fared better if it was the series finale instead.
- DirectorDavid Sullivan ProudfootStarsPaul DarrowJacqueline PearceMichael KeatingCommissioner Sleer hires a mysterious assassin to pick off the crew of the Scorpio, one by one.Absolute schlock, complete with Star Warsesque transitions and wipes. I have always thought that this was one of the better entries from the mixed bag that was series 4, even if not exactly for the right reasons.
- DirectorBrian LighthillStarsPaul DarrowJacqueline PearceMichael KeatingKeiller, an "old friend" of Avon, proposes an ingenious heist to make off with a huge Federation gold shipment. All it requires is the Scorpio, the Space Princess pleasure cruiser, an infiltration mission, and for nothing to go wrong.Another shining example of the self-inflicted sabotage the Resistance goes through, built around an exciting heist plot and an amazing ending with Paul Darrow's signature over-the-top mannerisms.
- DirectorMary RidgeStarsPaul DarrowMichael KeatingSteven PaceyOrac has pinpointed Blake's location and reveals to Avon and the crew of Scorpio that he is on the lawless planet Gauda Prime, where Blake has given up fighting against the Federation and is now a bounty hunter. However, the crew of the Scorpio suspect Blake has betrayed them and has sold out to the Federation. Why, Avon? Why?
