He's a master of the bizarre and disturbing, and probably paved the way for a lot of the more extreme mainstream freaky/horror that is made now. I snuck into the cinema (I was too young to really be there) to see Shivers when first released and Scanners was one of the first films I ever rented to watch on video. I loved both. I've been a fan ever since.
