Best shows of all time

by spyder7 | created - 03 Dec 2014 | updated - 20 Feb 2017 | Public

In order of greatness, yay!

Shows I haven't seen, which might later appear on this list if I get time to watch them: Mad Men, Oz, Downton Abbey, The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, & many more.

Shows that I've seen that simply do not make the cut: Six Feet Under, Lost, 24, Archer, Carnivale, Battlestar Galactica, and probably a few I'm forgetting.

1. The Wire (2002–2008)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

The Baltimore drug scene, as seen through the eyes of drug dealers and law enforcement.

Stars: Dominic West, Lance Reddick, Sonja Sohn, Wendell Pierce

Votes: 377,120

This is simply the best show of all time. Use any metric you'd like and it still comes out on top.

2. The Sopranos (1999–2007)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama

New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano deals with personal and professional issues in his home and business life that affect his mental state, leading him to seek professional psychiatric counseling.

Stars: James Gandolfini, Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli

Votes: 470,609

Absolutely stunning series. If not for a couple awful episodes in Season 6, one might even call it perfect.

3. Game of Thrones (2011–2019)

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.

Stars: Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey

Votes: 2,282,669

Best special effects in a television series. And it has so few weaknesses. A couple characters are beginning to become stale as of the 4th season, but that still has time to change.

4. Breaking Bad (2008–2013)

TV-MA | 45 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

A chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turns to manufacturing and selling methamphetamine with a former student in order to secure his family's future.

Stars: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt

Votes: 2,134,277

The best storyline of any series ever made. It's slightly marred by several instances of subpar acting by a couple of the stars (although certainly not Cranston). That may be reflective of some poor script choices at times as well.

5. Arrested Development (2003–2019)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy

Level-headed son Michael Bluth takes over family affairs after his father is imprisoned. But the rest of his spoiled, dysfunctional family are making his job unbearable.

Stars: Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett

Votes: 324,086

The first three seasons alone merit placing this show high on the list. In a world of simply terrible comedies, this is one show that happens to hit on almost every note. Season 4 was more of a mixed bag, but not bad enough to drop the rating lower.

6. Fargo (2014–2024)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Various chronicles of deception, intrigue, and murder in and around frozen Minnesota. All of these tales mysteriously lead back one way or another to Fargo, North Dakota.

Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks

Votes: 421,640

Great characters and excellent atmosphere. This show will make mid-westerners feel at home. Two excellent seasons so far and this one might end up being ranked higher after a couple more.

7. Deadwood (2004–2006)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, History

A show set in the late 1800s, revolving around the characters of Deadwood, South Dakota; a town of deep corruption and crime.

Stars: Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Molly Parker, Brad Dourif

Votes: 117,568

One of the greatest scripts ever written. Fans of the traditional western genre will most enjoy the first several episodes. Thereafter, it becomes an R-rated Shakespearean drama. If that's your thing, you'll love this one.

8. Gomorrah (2014–2021)

TV-MA | 45 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Ciro disregards tradition in his attempt to become the next boss of his crime syndicate. The internal power struggle puts him and his entire family's life at risk.

Stars: Salvatore Esposito, Marco D'Amore, Ivana Lotito, Cristiana Dell'Anna

Votes: 44,427

Visceral 1st season with some surprising turns. This one will be on my list to see how it progresses. I just wish I spoke Italian to get the full effect!

9. Impractical Jokers (2011– )

TV-14 | 30 min | Comedy, Reality-TV

Q, Sal, Joe and Murr are real-life best friends who love challenging each other to the most outrageous dares and stunts ever caught on hidden camera.

Stars: James Murray, Brian Quinn, Sal Vulcano, Joe Gatto

Votes: 45,762

For a sketch show to make this list, it must be good. If you want to laugh with four guys having fun, this is a perfect choice.

10. Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000–2024)

TV-MA | 30 min | Comedy

Larry David stars as an over-the-top version of himself in this comedy series that shows how seemingly trivial details of day-to-day life can precipitate a catastrophic chain of events.

Stars: Larry David, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman

Votes: 146,993

Larry is a funny guy. He knows how to write comedy better than almost anyone on the planet.

11. House of Cards (2013–2018)

TV-MA | 50 min | Drama

A Congressman works with his equally conniving wife to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him.

Stars: Kevin Spacey, Michel Gill, Robin Wright, Kate Mara

Votes: 530,748

Always puts the viewer on the edge of their seat. Great script and pacing are showcased by excellent acting. All around great political thriller style program, despite a ton of unreal events littered throughout.

12. Homeland (2011–2020)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

A bipolar CIA operative becomes convinced a prisoner of war has been turned by al-Qaeda and is planning to carry out a terrorist attack on American soil.

Stars: Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin, Damian Lewis, Rupert Friend

Votes: 360,848

Some of the best drama you will ever see. Based on the first 3 seasons, this show is simply excellent. Still waiting to catch up on the 4th season.

13. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011)

TV-MA | 55 min | Action, Adventure, Biography

In the time before the arrival of Spartacus, the House of Batiatus faces many challenges from competitors, and within its own household.

Stars: John Hannah, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, Dustin Clare

Votes: 145,327

Pure fun. This is a guilty pleasure, but it's oh so good.

14. Dexter (2006–2013)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

He's smart. He's lovable. He's Dexter Morgan, America's favorite serial killer, who spends his days solving crimes and nights committing them.

Stars: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar

Votes: 765,314

This series contains the greatest moment in television history (although it certainly wasn't the happiest moment). The series has so many great points, but it's difficult to ignore that its formulaic development detracted. In addition, the show must hold the record for the biggest quality drop in its last season.

15. Seinfeld (1989–1998)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy

The continuing misadventures of neurotic New York City stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his equally neurotic New York City friends.

Stars: Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards, Jason Alexander

Votes: 351,232

15 years ago, this probably would've been #1 on the list. It's aged surprisingly well, but shows of the new century have simply gotten ridiculously good.

16. Top Gear (2002–2022)

TV-PG | 60 min | Adventure, Sport, Talk-Show

The hosts talk about everything car-related. From new cars to how they're fueled, this show has it all.

Stars: Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May, The Stig

Votes: 126,656

How will any car show ever come close to being as good as this one? Way too much fun, especially the adventure specials.

17. Firefly (2002–2003)

TV-14 | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Five hundred years in the future, a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft tries to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them.

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin

Votes: 281,593

Tons of fun...for only one season. There's a lot of cheesiness in the show as well. It's certainly a great show, but 2-4 more seasons are needed to rank it higher.

18. The Walking Dead (2010–2022)

TV-MA | 45 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes wakes up from a coma to learn the world is in ruins and must lead a group of survivors to stay alive.

Stars: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Lauren Cohan

Votes: 1,081,248

When it's good, it's great. I'm not sure if there's ever been a more up and down show than this one. The filler episodes are painful in many respects but the good episodes are simply amazing television.

19. Orange Is the New Black (2013–2019)

TV-MA | 59 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

Convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting drug money, ordinarily law-abiding Piper Chapman is sentenced to 18 months behind bars and quickly discovers the realities of life-changing prison time.

Stars: Taylor Schilling, Danielle Brooks, Taryn Manning, Emma Myles

Votes: 320,059

Interesting characters in unique circumstances. It's just too bad that almost none of the characters are actually likable. Still a fun watch.

20. True Detective (2014– )

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Anthology series in which police investigations unearth the personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law.

Stars: Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch

Votes: 655,998

Season 2 was a total mess and has seriously marred an otherwise excellent series based on season 1. We'll see what happens if there's a 3rd season.

21. South Park (1997– )

TV-MA | 22 min | Animation, Comedy

Follows the misadventures of four irreverent grade-schoolers in the quiet, dysfunctional town of South Park, Colorado.

Stars: Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Isaac Hayes, Mona Marshall

Votes: 405,767

They have satire figured out. For the social commentary alone, it's worth putting it here.

22. Rick and Morty (2013– )

TV-MA | 23 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

The fractured domestic lives of a nihilistic mad scientist and his anxious grandson are further complicated by their inter-dimensional misadventures.

Stars: Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, Sarah Chalke, Justin Roiland

Votes: 600,949

The second season was a drastic improvement in writing. Loved every episode.
