Fonda is searing as the outsider who witnesses one communities paranoia lead to murder. Wellman would never again deliver a movie like this. All of the acting is first rate, and the obviously fake outdoors scenes only add to theatricality of the production.
Mitchum delivers as the brooding, conflicted gunman and director Robert Wise directs with style. Lillie Hellman's script is sometimes overtly complex but it's characters are real and believable.
