1. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)
R | 104 min | Drama, Music
A week in the life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961.
Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen | Stars: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund
Votes: 162,954 | Gross: $13.24M
This movie is a personal favourite. Definitely at the top of my list. This movie shows the dull and melancholic life of musician Llewyn Davis.
The movie doesn't have much of a plot and unlike most stories, there is little development in the main character. Llewyn Davis is pretty much the same apathetic and unsocial man throughout the whole movie.
What makes this movie so unique is that it doesn't bother to show the biggest changing point in Llewyn Davis' life. We don't need to see it. The movie focuses on the tragedy of what could have been a successful and lively man. We don't need to see character change, it already happened.
Most people can relate to Llewyn upon understanding his situation, a state of indifference after dropping to the lowest point in your life. You lose all sense of passion, inspiration, pleasure and even sorrow. You don't feel anything, you can't, you're cold and apathetic. And it's saving your life.
The whole movie is built with melancholy.
2. There Will Be Blood (2007)
R | 158 min | Drama
A story of family, religion, hatred, oil and madness, focusing on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business.
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Ciarán Hinds, Martin Stringer
Votes: 638,828 | Gross: $40.22M
This movie has incredible character development. With actor Daniel Day-Lewis playing the distrustful, greed powered man, Daniel Plainview, we see the progression and development of a man consumed by his oil business. But interestingly, Plainview isn't the only one who holds his traits of greed.
A great story which discusses and questions greed, success, altruism and organised religion.
3. No Country for Old Men (2007)

The Coen Brothers tell a great story with wonderful cinematography, perfectly capturing the atmosphere of helplessness and the character of Anton Chigurh.

Votes: 916,542 | Gross: $28.26M
This movie depicts the delusions of an antisocial war veteran left to live in isolation. You look through the eyes of a lonely, self-contradictory and slightly psychotic.
In Taxi Driver, You live the life of God's lonely man.

Votes: 707,460 | Gross: $83.47M
How screwed up is war? The extent of how war can effect the human mind is shown so well in Apocalypse Now. I had to watch the redux the first time, but it was still great to watch.
6. Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Votes: 787,945 | Gross: $46.36M
Similar to apocalypse now but focuses more on pressure from peers rather than the actual war itself. I believe FMJ is a movie about building the perfect soldiers, soldiers who seemed like they were born to kill.

The brutality of slavery shown in all its horror and despair. Michael Fassbender does a great job at showing the cruelty of plantation owners back then.

Votes: 716,807 | Gross: $56.95M
The movie that inspired. It drove people to wonder at the beauty and vastness of the universe. The slow pace of the movie is often complained about, but it was essential to allow people to reflect in total awe.

Great satire mocking the tension between Russia and the U.S. during the cold war. Many subtle jokes that can make the movie boring if you don't catch them, hilarious if you do.

Votes: 895,713 | Gross: $3.64M
The movie is unique in its incredibly fast trailer-like pace, utilising really quick cut montages to create a very surreal feel. The movie almost has a rhythm to it, like visual poetry about crumbled dreams.
Perhaps one of the most depressing movies ever made if you let yourself connect with the characters.
