My Own 2015 BAFTA Winners - Films
This is a list of my personal favourites amongst the 2015's BAFTA nominees - Films Category. I haven't seen all the nominated films (because where I live, most of the well known films are being released this month or in March, and those that aren't too famous I don't even know if it will ever be released here). Anyways, this is fun. NOT a prediction list!

- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsMichael KeatonZach GalifianakisEdward NortonA washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production.Best Film.
I was able to watch the five nominated films, and I admit my favourite, in direction, acting by cast ensemble, cinematography, script, etc. is absolutely "Birdman".
One of the best films of 2014. - DirectorMorten TyldumStarsBenedict CumberbatchKeira KnightleyMatthew GoodeDuring World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians while attempting to come to terms with his troubled private life.Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year.
Amongst the 6 nominated films, I was able to watch just 3: "The Imitation Game", "The Theory of Everything" and "Under the Skin". Unfortunately, neither "Pride", "'71" nor "Paddington" have a release date in my country.
From the 3 I was able to see, all of them have scripts adapted from books/novels. In this cases, I need the film to be accurate enough (specially on biographies), but also creative. The one which fulfills the criteria and have a great cast, art direction and interesting storytelling (despite the historical inaccuracies), for me is "The Imitation Game".
A story that must be told. And is well told. - DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsMichael KeatonZach GalifianakisEdward NortonA washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production.Best Screenplay (Original).
I was able to see the 5 nominated films. As I stated in the "Best Film" category, the one screenplay that surprised me the most, and that I enjoyed the most amongst the nominees is "Birdman". - DirectorJames MarshStarsEddie RedmayneFelicity JonesTom PriorStephen Hawking gets unprecedented success in the field of physics despite being diagnosed with motor neuron disease at the age of 21. He defeats awful odds as his first wife Jane aids him loyally.Best Screenplay (Adapted).
I was able to see just 4 of the 5 nominated films. Unfortunately, "Paddington" has no official release date here in my country.
Amongst the 4 films I was able to see, 3 are based on biographies and one on a novel. As I stated before, biographies are more "difficult" with me, because I like accuracy, but I understand this is a film, not a documentary, so I like a screenplay that is able to keep itself accurate enough, as well as to manage create artistic liberties in order to obtain a most powerful and engaging story, but always keeping the facts first.
I've chosen "The Theory of Everything" because, despite some historical inaccuracies, it is faithful to the feelings of Jane Hawking. No doubt Anthony McCarten (as well as Felicity Jones) did a great work. - DirectorMike LeighStarsTimothy SpallPaul JessonDorothy AtkinsonAn exploration of the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric, British painter J.M.W. Turner's life.Best Cinematography.
Amongst the 5 nominees. I was able to see just 4 films. Unfortunately, "Ida" will be released in my country on February 12, 2015 (a little late for the BAFTAs).
Between the 4 films I actually seen, the one which cinematography impressed me the most was "Mr. Turner". What an amazing work re-creating in real size some of J.M.W. Turner's most outstanding paintings. Wonderful job of Dick Pope.
Another must-see film of 2014! - DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.Best Editing.
I am fortunate to say I was able to see all the nominees on this category.
The film that impressed me the most with an impeccable editing, so much that I learned after I've seen the film some details about the filming, and how those were resolved in such a clean and outstanding way by film editor Tom Cross is obviously, "Whiplash".
Great work from all the cast and crew, congrats to Miles Teller for playing his own drums, to Mr. Cross of course, and another 2014 must-see. - DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.Best Production Design.
I have seen the 5 nominees in this category and, IMHO, I feel "The Grand Budapest Hotel" outstand with its Production Design, without detracting of the other nominated films. - DirectorMike LeighStarsTimothy SpallPaul JessonDorothy AtkinsonAn exploration of the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric, British painter J.M.W. Turner's life.Best Costume Design.
Unfortunately, I wasn't been able to see "Into the Woods" yet (released in my country last week), so I had to choose between the 4 nominated films I actually have seen.
As a Costume Designer myself, and being working in costume making for over 11 years now, this category is specially delightful to me. Being all films set in past ages, it's more interesting indeed. The one with costumes that I loved the most is "Mr. Turner". A wonderful time in fashion design history, accurate enough, and with variety of costumes, from female aristocrats to regular peasants. - DirectorJonathan GlazerStarsScarlett JohanssonJeremy McWilliamsLynsey Taylor MackayA mysterious young woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. However, events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.Best Original Music.
I have seen all the nominees. My favourite score is not here ("Gone Girl"), but I had to admit I was rather intrigued with "Under the Skin" musical score. It goes fantastic with the whole film's proposal. - DirectorRob MarshallStarsAnna KendrickMeryl StreepChris PineA witch tasks a childless baker and his wife with procuring magical items from classic fairy tales to reverse the curse put on their family tree.Best Make Up/Hair.
I haven't seen "Guardians of the Galaxy" nor "Into the Woods" yet, but I have seen enough trailers and photos from "Into the Woods" to realise that the hair and make-up of characters like Meryl Streep's Witch, Mackenzie Mauzy's Rapunzel, Christine Baranski, Tammy Blanchard, Lucy Punch and Johnny Deep are outstanding.
From the films I've actually seen, "Mr. Turner" is my choice of course. Amazing work on the make-up department, aging the characters and specially to depict Dorothy Atkinson's character Hannah Danby's psoriasis. - DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.Best Sound.
I have seen all the nominees, but I have to admit some of the copies were not with the most excellent sound qualities.
Luckily enough, the Blu-Ray of "Whiplash" I own has an extremely high quality, both image and sound. And this is a film where sound is imprescindible. Excellent work by the Sound department. - DirectorMatt ReevesStarsGary OldmanKeri RussellAndy SerkisThe fragile peace between apes and humans is threatened as mistrust and betrayal threaten to plunge both tribes into a war for dominance over the Earth.Best Achievement in Special Visual Effects.
The only film I haven't seen amongst the 5 nominees is "Guardians of the Galaxy".
Indeed, all the four nominees I have seen have incredible Special Visual Effects. But the one that impressed me the most is "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". A very good film overall. - DirectorPawel PawlikowskiStarsAgata KuleszaAgata TrzebuchowskaDawid OgrodnikA novice nun about to take her vows uncovers a family secret dating back to the German occupation.Best Film not in the English Language.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the nominated films for Best Film not in the English Language. This is, as I stated before, because here in my country, just one of this films have been released on Cinema Theatres. "Dabba" was released on October 30, 2014, but I wasn't able to catch it for schedule conflicts.
"Ida" will be released on February 12, 2015 and "Trash" will be released on March 12, 2015. There's no information about releases of "Leviafan" nor "Deux jours, une nuit" here in my country.
In this case, as I haven't seen any of the films, I choosed the one I'm looking forward to see the most. And that film is "Ida". I'm glad it will be released very soon here, I hope the same happens with the two films that haven't a release date yet. - DirectorDon HallChris WilliamsStarsRyan PotterScott AdsitJamie ChungA special bond develops between plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax and prodigy Hiro Hamada, who together team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.Best Animated Feature Film.
This one is my fault. The three nominees has been released here in my country, the last one being "The Lego Movie", released a couple of days ago.
As I haven't seen any of them, I picked the one I want to see the most, which is "Big Hero 6". I hope I will be able to see it next week, followed by "The Lego Movie". - DirectorIain ForsythJane PollardStarsNick CaveSusie BickWarren EllisWriter and musician Nick Cave marks his 20,000th day on the planet Earth.Best Documentary.
Amongst the 5 nominees in the Documentary category, only 2 has been released here in my country: "Twenty Feet from Stardom" was originally debuted on pay TV, where I watched it, thanks to HBO Channel. Then it had a limited release on theatres under the "In-Edit Nescafe" Festival, and now is been showcased widely on big Cinema Theatre chains. "20,000 Days on Earth" had a limited release on "In-Edit Nescafe" Festival, which is a very good festival that features mainly documentaries related with music and musicians, but also some films (fiction) related with music/musicians.
There is no formal release date for any of the other documentaries, I really hope they'll get a theatrical release.
I enjoyed both documentaries. They are very different, and I guess I feel more attached to "20,000 Days on Earth" because I'm a big fan of Nick Cave's work, but also because the documentary's concept is different than what we are used to. A bit of a mix of the Bill Nichols' type of documentaries. - DirectorTerry KinaneAlasdair MacmillanStarsMichael AspelAlastair BurnetCherOutstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.
Unfortunately, NONE of these films have been released here in my country. I know "'71" was shown twice under the "SANFIC Film Festival" last year, but it was impossible to me to make it to neither of the both dates, the film was shown very late at night and far away from my home, work and college.
So, I can't vote for what I haven't seen.
I really hope all of this films will get theatrical release here. - DirectorAlasdair MacmillanStarsGordon BurnsKeith CarradineGilly ComanBest Short Animation.
