Oscar Nomination-less

by luke-a-mcgowan | created - 13 Feb 2015 | updated - 09 Mar 2016 | Public

A variety of actors and actresses who have never received an Oscar nomination.

In no particular order.

1. Brendan Gleeson

Actor | Calvary

Brendan Gleeson was born in Dublin, Ireland, to Pat and Frank Gleeson. From a very young age, he loved to learn, especially reading classical text in and outside the classroom. He took great attention to Irish play writers such as Samuel Beckett, which eventually led to him performing in his high ...

Gleeson is thoroughly effective in Gangs of New York, Edge of Tomorrow and The Goblet of Fire, but it is his ability to mask his true intentions that made those parts truly impressive. On the other range of the scale, his heartbreaking performance in Calvary makes him a superb drama actor.

Showcase: Calvary

2. Vincent D'Onofrio

Actor | Men in Black

Vincent Phillip D'Onofrio was born on June 30, 1959 in Brooklyn, New York, to Phyllis, a restaurant manager and server, and Gene D'Onofrio, a theatre production assistant and interior designer. He is of Italian descent and has two older sisters. He studied at the Actors Studio and the American ...

Another former American crime show star, D'Onofrio has shown strong real dramatic turns ever since Full Metal Jacket, for which he should have won an Oscar. In the woefully bad The Judge, D'Onofrio's performance as the mentally and physically wounded life failure Glen Palmer is the single redeeming quality. It will be fascinating to see what he brings to Jurassic World.

Showcase: Full Metal Jacket

3. Paul Dano

Actor | There Will Be Blood

An actor for all seasons and all kinds of roles (from dark, difficult characters to more loving ones) Paul Dano has an extensive body work that includes working with directors such as Paul Thomas Anderson, Steve McQueen, Dayton & Ferris, Ang Lee, Denis Villenueve and Paolo Sorrentino; acting with ...

Whether playing a bible-bashing pastor in There Will Be Blood, a reclusive and repressed emo teenage son in Little Miss Sunshine, a racist foreman in 12 Years A Slave, or a mentally scarred kidnapping suspect in Prisoners, Paul Dano has stolen every movie he is in. At first it was an inherent delight in watching him be smacked around by the various protagonists, but his talent and delivery are what truly make him talented.

Showcase: There Will Be Blood

4. Jon Bernthal

Actor | The Wolf of Wall Street

Jon Bernthal was born and raised in Washington D.C., the son of Joan (Marx) and Eric Bernthal, a lawyer. His grandfather was musician Murray Bernthal. Jon went to study at The Moscow Art Theatre School, in Moscow, Russia, where he also played professional baseball in the European professional ...

John Bernthal is doing some stellar character work as time goes by. His performance in Fury is absolutely superb, easily one of the best five of the year. He has also popped up and given memorable turns in The Wolf of Wall Street, and TV shows like Boston Legal.

Showcase: Fury

5. Mia Wasikowska

Actress | Alice in Wonderland

Mia is an Australian actress, born and raised in the country's capital, Canberra. She is the daughter of photographers Marzena Wasikowska and John Reid. Her mother is Polish and her father is an Australian of British ancestry. She has an older sister, Jess, and a younger brother, Kai. At age eight,...

Young Mia Wasikowska is mesmerising in everything she does. As the eldest child in The Kids Are All Right, she was the film's most sympathetic character and also the most loveable. In just two short hours, she becomes so endearing that her moving to college affected myself as a viewer. She was also mesmerising in Maps to the Stars, a dark and twisted performance that a less bold actress would have bungled.

Showcase: The Kids Are All Right

6. David Wenham

Actor | The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

David Wenham is an Australian actor who is known for his portrayals of Faramir from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Friar Carl from the Van Helsing franchise and Dilios from 300. He also acted in Moulin Rouge, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Dark City, Top of the Lake, SeaChange ...

David Wenham showed his acting chops in his spectacular but underseen Killing Time as corrupt lawyer Andrew Fraser. His performance as the emotionally wounded and unloved Faramir is also a huge credit to his acting potential.

Showcase: Killing Time (TV Series)

7. Alison Pill

Actress | Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Alison Pill was most recently seen in HELLO TOMORROW! for Apple TV+. She previously starred in the CBS All Access series, STAR TREK: PICARD, Alex Garland's FX miniseries, DEVS, and the Amazon series, THEM. Pill's other television work includes Ryan Murphy's AMERICAN HORROR STORY: CULT, the ABC ...

The sweet, bubbly Alison Pill is a delight as a motivated lesbian activist in Milk and beautifully portrays the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald in Midnight in Paris. She has a delightful positive aura around her, which was used to great effect to lower the main characters' (and the audiences!) guard in Snowpiercer.

Showcase: Milk

8. Brian Cox

Actor | Succession

Brian Cox is an Emmy Award-winning Scottish actor. He was born on June 1, 1946 in Dundee, Scotland, to Mary Ann Guillerline Cox, maiden surname McCann, a spinner, and Charles McArdle Campbell Cox, a shopkeeper and butcher. His father was of Irish ancestry and his mother was of Irish and Scottish ...

Brian Cox is one of the most underrated antagonistic actors in Hollywood. His performance as William Stryker in X-Men 2 drips with malevolence, and stands as one of the very best comic book villains on screen. His booming voice and huge presence also helped shape his characters as a Greek king in Troy and an acting coach in Adaptation.

Showcase: X2 - X-Men United

9. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Actor | Farming

Born and raised in London, England, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje began his career as a model in Milan. He graduated with a masters degree in Law from London's prestigious Kings College, before moving to Los Angeles to make the transition to acting. Fluent in several languages, including English, ...

Always one of the most fascinating and interesting characters in the TV show Lost, I really enjoyed spotting Adewale Akkinuoye-Agjabe in The Mummy Returns, where he played the tough henchman character with superb charisma and even a little bit of humour. His performance as a gladiator in Pompeii is the single salvageable piece of acting in the entire movie.

Showcase: Lost (TV Series)

10. Michael Peña

Actor | American Hustle

Michael Peña was born and raised in Chicago, to Nicolasa, a social worker, and Eleuterio Peña, who worked at a button factory. His parents were originally from Mexico. After graduating from high school, he went to an open casting call for the Peter Bogdanovich feature To Sir, with Love II (1996), ...

Pena is a character actor whose quality contributions to Fury and The Lincoln Lawyer only showed how underused he was in Babel and American Hustle. However, it is his loving and heart-rending performance in Crash that gets me every time.

Showcase: The Lincoln Lawyer

11. Timothy Spall

Actor | Mr. Turner

Timothy Leonard Spall is an award-winning classical character actor who was born on February 27, 1957, and raised in London. The son of blue-collar parents, Joseph L. Spall, a postal worker, and Sylvia R. (Leonard), a hairdresser, his interest in acting happened early and Spall auditioned and ...

I would always have said Spall was talented for his small roles in The King's Speech, Harry Potter, The Last Samurai, and his voice work in Chicken Run. Seeing his mesmerising lead performance in Mr. Turner, for which he very nearly should have WON the Best Actor Oscar, only confirms those feelings.

Showcase: Mr. Turner

12. Sam Rockwell

Actor | Moon

Sam Rockwell was born on November 5, 1968, in San Mateo, California, the only child of two actors, Pete Rockwell and Penny Hess. The family moved to New York when he was two years old, living first in the Bronx and later in Manhattan. When Sam was five years old, his parents separated, at which ...

Sam Rockwell is without a doubt one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. With ease, he can make us love him (Seven Psychopaths), love to hate him (Iron Man 2) or just plain despise him (The Green Mile).

Showcase: The Green Mile

13. Burn Gorman

Actor | Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio

Burn Gorman was born on September 1, 1974 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA. He is an actor, known for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018). He has been married to Sarah Beard since July 2004. They have three children.

Burn Gorman first captured most of our attention in Game of Thrones, when he delivered one of Season 3's most delicious lines - "you are a bastard. A *beep* wildling bastard" and then reprised with role in Season 4. Although with much less rich dialogue, Gorman still dripped with malice and brought passion to the role. He also had memorable performances in The Dark Knight Rises and especially Pacific Rim. His back-and-forth with Charlie Day was one of the most memorable parts of a movie that primarily featured robots and monsters bashing each other up.

Showcase: Pacific Rim

14. Michelle Monaghan

Actress | Gone Baby Gone

Michelle Lynn Monaghan was born on March 23, 1976, in Winthrop, Iowa. She is the youngest of three children and the only daughter of Sharon (Hamel), who ran a day care center, and Robert L. Monaghan, a factory worker and farmer. She is of mostly Irish and German descent. After graduating from high ...

The gorgeous Michelle Monaghan stuns audiences in everything - her bubbly and funny performance in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, her loving and loyal Julia in Mission Impossible 3, or her more mature performance as Maggie Hart in True Detective. The first time I really sat up and took notice was in Ben Affleck's masterpiece Gone Baby Gone, where she nailed every scene she was in with conviction and passion.

Showcase: Gone Baby Gone

15. Barry Pepper

Self | 'Saving Private Ryan': Boot Camp

Barry Robert Pepper was born on April 4, 1970, in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada. He has two older brothers named Alex and Doug Pepper. The Peppers didn't stick around Campbell River for too long. They had been building a ship in their backyard for years. When Barry was five years old, ...

Barry Pepper is one of those character actors who is always just around, he vanished for a few years and then you see him in a few things. As Dean Stanton in The Green Mile, Jackson in Saving Private Ryan and Lucky Ned Pepper in True Grit, Pepper always brings memorable characters to life out of small-on-paper roles. His most impressive work was his personification of Bobby Kennedy in the Kennedys, a truly remarkable embodiment.

Showcase: The Kennedys

16. Anthony Mackie

Actor | The Hurt Locker

Anthony Mackie is an American actor. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Martha (Gordon) and Willie Mackie, Sr., who owned a business, Mackie Roofing. Anthony has been featured in feature films, television series and Broadway and Off-Broadway plays, including Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, ...

Charismatic but with great dramatic and comedic chops, Anthony Mackie should have been in the Best Supporting Actor race for The Hurt Locker. He played that part with the authenticity that film needed to succeed. He has also shown himself to be a superb supporting protagonist (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) or a hateful antagonists (Million Dollar Baby).

Showcase: The Hurt Locker

17. Thandiwe Newton

Actress | Crash

Thandiwe Newton was born in London. She is the daughter of Zimbabwean mother Nyasha, a health-care worker from the Shona tribe, and British father Nick Newton, who worked as a lab technician. She lived in Zambia until political unrest caused her family to move back to the UK, where she lived in ...

Thandie Newton was just plain snubbed for an Oscar nomination for Crash, as she gave easily the most memorable performance in the film. It is good to see that BAFTA noticed, even though the Oscar's nominated Catherine Keener's horrendously bland performance in Capote instead. She has also been the most memorable Mission Impossible Girl for her alluring performance.

Showcase: Crash

18. Mena Suvari

Actress | American Beauty

Mena Alexandra Suvari was born in Newport, Rhode Island, the youngest of four children. She is the daughter of Ando Suvari, a psychiatrist, and the former Candice Chambers, a nurse. Mena's first name comes from her British aunt named after the "House of Mena" Hotel (at the base of the pyramids in ...

Stunningly beautiful with charisma coming out of every orifice, Mena Suvari was a critical part of American Beauty, where she played Angela with confidence and vulnerability. It is a true shame she has never broken out into the same fame as Spacey or Bening.

Showcase: American Beauty

19. Tye Sheridan

Actor | Mud

Tye Sheridan was born on November 11, 1996 in Palestine, Texas as Tye Kayle Sheridan. Having been named 1 of Variety's 10 Actors to Watch, he has emerged as 1 of Hollywood's most sought after young talents. He has been seen in Ready Player One (2018) as the lead character Wade Watts. He also ...

Sheridan is one of the largest reasons that I consider Mud to be essential cinema for teenage boys. Tough and protective yet naive and vulnerable, he is in many ways the average guy and that makes his performances in Mud and Joe so relatable. I look forward to his work in X-Men Apocalypse to see whether he can dodge the typecast bullet.

Showcase: Mud

20. Ryan Phillippe

Actor | Crash

Ryan Phillippe was born on September 10, 1974 in New Castle, Delaware, to Susan (Thomas), a nurse, and Richard Phillippe, a chemical technician. He has three sisters, Kirsten, Lindsay, and Katelyn, and attended New Castle Baptist Academy. Ryan's acting career began with the soap opera One Life to ...

Cool and collected, Ryan Phillippe can have you love or hate him in the drop of the hat. He was one of the many fantastic performances in Crash, as the young cop trying to avoid racism but in the end giving in to his fear. His performance in The Lincoln Lawyer is sublime - convincing us of his innocence, and yet having us despise him with ease.

Showcase: The Lincoln Lawyer

21. Stellan Skarsgård

Actor | Good Will Hunting

Stellan Skarsgård was born in Gothenburg, Västra Götalands län, Sweden, to Gudrun (Larsson) and Jan Skarsgård. He became a star in his teens through the title role in the TV-series Bombi Bitt och jag (1968). Between the years 1972-88 he was employed at The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, where...

Skarsgard brings credibility to every performance he does, whether as a mathematics teacher in Good Will Hunting, an entrepreneur with a secret in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, or a cursed pirate in Pirates of the Carribean. A veteran character actor, I can only hope one day he is able to break out into a leading role.

Showcase: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

22. Daniel Brühl

Actor | Rush

Daniel Brühl was born in Barcelona, Spain. His father was German TV director Hanno Brühl (1937-2010), who was born in São Paulo, Brazil. His Spanish mother was a teacher. He also has a brother and a sister, Oliver and Miriam. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Cologne, Germany, where he ...

A lovestruck and slightly tragic hero in Inglourious Basterds was Bruhl's most effective and breakout role, but it was his mesmerising personification of Niki Lauda that really stole everyone's attention. He should have contended for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. It will be very interesting to see his career choices down the line, as he was truly wasted in A Most Wanted Man.

Showcase: Rush

23. Mackenzie Foy

Actress | Interstellar

Mackenzie Christine Foy was born 10 November 2000. She began her career as a child model in 2004, working for Garnet Hill, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Guess Kids. She has also modelled in print ads for companies such as Rubbermaid, Jones Apparel Group, The Walt Disney Company, Mattel, Target Corporation...

Mackenzie Foy was someone I had on my radar in the pile of "never do well" actors who will fail to move out of the Twilight films' shadows. However, her performance in Interstellar was so moving and so genuine that I truly hope to see her get more work in the years to come.

Showcase: Interstellar

24. Callan Mulvey

Actor | Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Callan Mulvey is one of Australia's leading actors best known for his roles in the television series Rush, Mystery Road (for which he received an AACTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Drama), Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms and Underbelly, as well as Darren Ashton's feature film ...

Mulvey first came to my attention in the TV show Rush as an efficient and effective police sergeant. He has since managed to make small appearances in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and 300: Rise of an Empire, in both of which he carried that dramatic presence that made him such a captivating lead. It will be fantastic to see him continue to move up in Hollywood.

Showcase: Rush (TV Series)

25. Christopher Meloni

Actor | Man of Steel

Blessed with a piercing, blue-eyed glint, brawny looks, cocky "tough guy" stance and effortless charisma, TV's Christopher Meloni has grabbed audiences' attention, male and female alike, finding breakthrough small screen stardom playing both sides of the law. Audiences first were taken in by his ...

Meloni was always a good-enough star of CSI: SVU, but he has popped up in a few movies that have made me take notice. His performance as the ensnared detective in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was a crucial performance to establish Eva Green's Dame. He also gave a very vulnerable and secretive performance as Shailene Woodley's father in the woeful White Bird in a Blizzard.

Showcase: Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

26. Bill Paxton

Actor | Aliens

Bill Paxton was born on May 17, 1955 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was the son of Mary Lou (Gray) and John Lane Paxton, a businessman and actor (as John Paxton). Bill moved to Los Angeles, California at age eighteen, where he found work in the film industry as a set dresser for Roger Corman's New World ...

A guy who will be a memorable part of any film you cast him in, Bill Paxton just has a way of making his dialogue crackle. See his delightful Master Sergeant in Edge of Tomorrow or his sly but pathetic pick up artist in True Lies. He can make you love him or love to hate him, or anywhere in between.

Showcase: Edge of Tomorrow

27. Noah Emmerich

Actor | Super 8

Noah Emmerich was born and raised in New York City, to Constance, a concert pianist, and André Emmerich, an art dealer and gallery owner. He attended Yale University, where he sang with the a capella group the Yale Spizzwinks. He attended NYU Film School where he wrote and directed an award winning...

Noah Emmerich is a man who can convey a great deal. He stole the show in Little Children as a man who feels unwanted, and so he tries to create a mob to attack a pedophile just so he can be a part of something. His subtle acting/acting performance in The Truman Show is also vital to that film's context.

Showcase: Little Children

28. Oscar Isaac

Actor | Ex Machina

Oscar Isaac was born Óscar Isaac Hernández Estrada in Guatemala, to a Guatemalan mother, María Eugenia, and a Cuban father, Oscar Gonzalo Hernández-Cano, a pulmonologist. Oscar was raised in Miami, Florida. Before he became an actor, he played lead guitar and sang vocals in his band the Blinking ...

I have almost never seen less than a 10/10 performance from Oscar Isaac (the less said about The Two Faces of January the better). He takes shallow roles and injects them with so much depth that we understand his characters completely. He salvaged A Most Violent Year, he was utterly brilliant in Ex Machina as a man with a secret, and his performance in Drive is likely the best in that film.

Showcase: Ex Machina

29. Joel Edgerton

Actor | The Gift

Joel Edgerton was born on June 23, 1974 in Blacktown, New South Wales, Australia, to Marianne (van Dort) and Michael Edgerton, who is a solicitor and property developer. His brother is filmmaker Nash Edgerton. His mother is a Dutch immigrant. Joel went to Hills Grammar School in the Western Suburbs...

The kind of guy who has been around forever, Joel Edgerton exploded in 2015 with a solid performance in Black Mass and as a filmmaker in The Gift. I cannot wait to see future directorial endeavours from him.

Showcase: The Gift

30. Bobby Cannavale

Actor | The Station Agent

In both career and in real life, Bobby Cannavale tends to choose the unconventional way of doing things. In the beginning, his decisions may have cost the dark, swarthily good-looking actor some acting roles and/or good-paying parts but, in the end, his strong work ethic and sense of self, despite ...

31. Jennifer Garner

Actress | Alias

37. Ray Liotta

Actor | Narc

Intense was the word for Ray Liotta. He specialized in psychopathic characters who hide behind a cultivated charm. Even in his nice-guy roles in Field of Dreams (1989) and Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), you get the impression that something is smoldering inside of him. He was born in Newark, New ...

38. Ben Affleck
