Singer/songwriter Carol Connors was born as Annette Kleinbard on November 13, 1941 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Carol began her singing career while still in high school. She was the lead singer of the pop vocal trio The Teddy Bears, who had a number one hit song in 1958 with the lovely pop ballad "To Know Him is to Love Him". Phil Spector specifically wrote the song to showcase Connors' voice. Carol holds the distinction of being the only woman to co-write a hit hot-rod song; she penned "Hey Little Cobra" for The Rip Chords. Connors also co-wrote the sole yuletide hot-rod song "Santa's Got a Cobra" for The Rip Chords. Carol's favorite song that she's written is "With You I'm Born Again", a 1980 hit duet with Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright. Among the songs Connors recorded throughout the 60s are "Go Go G.T.O" (a delightful duet with her sister Cheryl), "Yum Yum Yamaha" and "A Swingin' Summer". Carol is perhaps best known for co-writing "Gonna Fly Now", the rousing Oscar-nominated theme for the hit movie Rocky (1976). Other films Connors has made soundtrack contributions to are Butterfly (1981), Fade to Black (1980), The Earthling (1980), Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), The Rescuers (1977) and Orca (1977). Moreover, Carol co-wrote the themes for the TV shows Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous (1984) and Star Search (1983). Connors has performed the national anthem at numerous prestigious events throughout the years. In addition, Carol Connors has been involved in many charities: she's not only a board member of both the Connie Stevens CES Foundation and the Friars Charitable Foundation, but also has been a celebrity ambassador for Childhelp USA since 2001.- Music Department

The King's Men quartet comprised Ken Darby, arranger & bass; Rad Robinson baritone; Jon Dodson, lead tenor; Bud Linn, top tenor. As The Ramblers, the quartet was founded in Los Angeles in 1929. The quartet was featured on radio and recorded with The Happy Chappies for Columbia Records in 1930. By June, 1931 the tenor Joe Mitchell was replaced by Rad Robinson, and the name was changed to the King's Men, named for a radio sponsor named King. Their first film appearance was as a singing foursome in the Paramount film Sweetie (1929). This led to other films and radio contracts. When the The Boswell Sisters left Los Angeles station KFWB in 1932, the The King's Men replaced them for two years.
They achieved national prominence on radio and records as a feature of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. They sang with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra from 1934 until 1937. Whiteman also acted as their agent, and encouraged their musical activities outside his organization. They subsequently appeared on other broadcasts, including the Rudy Vallee program. They were heard, and sometimes seen, in many feature films, including Sweetie (1929), ("My Sweeter than Sweet"), Hollywood Party (1934) ("Feelin' High"), Let's Go Native (1930) (title song), Belle of the Nineties (1934) ("Troubled Waters"), Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938), Murder at the Vanities (1934) ("Lovely One"), and notably The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which they are the off screen voices for the Lollipop Guild.
After leaving the Whiteman band in 1937, Ken Darby was hired by conductor/composer Herbert Stothart at MGM. Darby's first screen credit was as vocal arranger and supervisor for The Wizard of Oz (1939) in which the The King's Men are the off screen voices for specific Munchkins. Darby was the voice of the Mayor of Munchkin Land, while Robinson's voice was heard as Coroner. Dodson and Linn represented the two boys in the Lollipop Guild. Darby's other MGM films included three MacDonald/Eddy pictures. On screen, The King's Men were best remembered as the singing cowboys in sixteen Hopalong Cassidy films. In the film Honolulu (1939), the The King's Men play the The Marx Brothers on ice skates. Darby was subsequently associated with the Music Department at Walt Disney Studios (Dumbo (1941), Song of the South (1946), Make Mine Music (1946), Pinocchio (1940), So Dear to My Heart (1948), Bambi (1942).
For fifteen years The King's Men were regulars on the "Fibber McGee and Molly" broadcasts, and made records with Jim Jordan and Marian Jordan. The King's Men quartet was the basis for the Ken Darby Singers, featured on John Charles Thomas "Westinghouse Broadcasts" and on many Decca phonograph records, such as Bing Crosby's original recording of "White Christmas." Darby went on to win three Academy Awards (The King and I (1956), Porgy and Bess (1959), Camelot (1967)) as Associate Musical Supervisor with Alfred Newman and André Previn. The King's Men and their families remained lifelong friends.- Music Artist

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Bill Withers was born on July 4, 1938 in the small coal-mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia and was raised in the nearby town of Beckley. He was the youngest of six children of Mattie (Galloway), a maid, and William Withers, a miner. His father died when Withers was thirteen. Bill worked a series of odd jobs to help his mother out. At age seventeen he joined the US Navy and first became interested in both singing and songwriting during his tour of duty in the armed forces. After being discharged from the Navy in 1965, Bill moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a music career. Withers worked a full time job making toilet seats at the Boeing aircraft company and recorded demos on the side at night for several years prior to being signed to the Sussex Records label in 1970. In 1971 Bill released his debut album "Just As I Am." The song "Ain't No Sunshine" was a #3 R&B radio hit and won the Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Song. Withers scored a massive smash in 1972 with the marvelously inspirational "Lean on Me," which reached #1 on the Billboard pop charts on July 8. "Use Me" was likewise successful; it peaked at #2 on the Billboard pop charts. In the summer of 1974 Bill performed in concert along with James Brown, Etta James and BB King at the historic Ali/Frasier fight in Zaire (footage of Withers in concert can be seen in the acclaimed documentary "When We Were Kings"). After parting with Sussex Records, Withers hooked up with Columbia Records in 1975. "Lovely Day" was a Top 30 Billboard pop hit in 1978. "Just the Two of Us," Bill's terrific duet with Grover Washington, Jr., was a #2 Billboard pop hit in 1981 and won the Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Song. His songs have been covered by a diverse array of artists that include Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Tom Jones, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, Grace Jones, Diana Ross, Club Nouveau (their 1987 cover of "Lean on Me" won the Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Song in 1988), Morrisey, Paul McCartney, Michael Bolton, Fiona Apple, Sting, Kenny Rogers, and Johnny Mathis.
Withers was the recipient of the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award in 2006. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2007. Bill's songs have been featured on the soundtracks to such movies as "Hoot," "Roll Bounce," "Starsky & Hutch," "Bandits," "Exit Wounds," "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," "American Beauty," "Notting Hill," "The Bodyguard," "American Me," "Lean on Me," and "Looking for Mr. Goodbar," plus episodes of the TV shows "Entourage," "LAX," "Cold Case," "Keen Eddie," "Six Feet Under," "The Wire," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigations," and "The Simpsons."- Actress
