- DirectorJ.D. DillardStarsKiersey ClemonsEmory CohenHanna Mangan LawrenceA woman washes ashore a small uninhabited island after an accident. The situation turns from bad to worse when she realizes there is a mysterious creature hunting at night.Surprisingly effective bare bones survival/creature feature flick.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsTom HardyMichelle WilliamsRiz AhmedA failed reporter is bonded to an alien entity, one of many symbiotes who have invaded Earth. But the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it.Better than I expected, though I'd wish they had gone for a more horror-centric approach instead of the anti-hero angle.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsJack CruzDavid LynchToototabonIn a locked down train station, a homicide detective conducts an interview with a tormented monkey.
I... have literally no words.
Y'all know that game where you write a few lines on a piece of paper and then fold it down so only one word is visible and the next person has to continue from there without knowing what came before?
Like that, just as a 17-minute short. - DirectorKevin SmithStarsJoey Lauren AdamsBen AffleckFred ArmisenJay and Silent Bob inadvertently sign away their names and rights to the new Bluntman and Chronic movie. Now they head to Hollywood to stop the film from being made. Along the way Jay discovers that he is a father.Bonkers. Got very confused but in a fun way.
- DirectorRobert EggersStarsRobert PattinsonWillem DafoeValeriia KaramanTwo lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.Visually stunning, great acting, amazing sound design, but the story didn't do a whole lot for me.
- DirectorJ.C. ChandorStarsRobert RedfordAfter a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face.Okay little movie.
- DirectorAdam Egypt MortimerStarsMiles RobbinsPatrick SchwarzeneggerSasha LaneA troubled college freshman, Luke, suffers a violent family trauma. He then resurrects his charismatic childhood imaginary friend Daniel to help him cope, not realizing how dangerous Daniel is.Stylistically most of the film is like British kitchen sink realism, but is interspersed with bonkers visuals and scenes with colour schemes out of Argento's Suspiria.
There's a bit of fantasy elements in there, Hellraiser-esque sequences, touches of Lovecraft, a bit of mysticism, and some body-horror, all the while dealing with childhood trauma, schizophrenia, and - to some extent, I felt - toxic friendships.
Neither drama nor horror but a horrific drama.
Pulled me in from the very first minutes.
Also, it had been too long since I saw Mary Stuart Masterson in anything. - DirectorRodman FlenderStarsBrooke AdamsJeff HayengaJames KarenA couple struggling to conceive visit a miracle doctor as a last hope for having a child. The wife gets pregnant, but after the initial joy comes horror, as she slowly discovers the nightmarish truth behind the doctor's success.Fine for what it was. Seemed more like an early 80s movie than an early 90s.
- DirectorScott SpeerStarsBella ThorneRichard HarmonDermot MulroneySet ten years after an apocalyptic event that killed millions and left the world inhabited by ghosts. Not a masterpiece, but for a teen-sci-fi-mystery-thriller it wasn't too bad. A couple of dodgy effects and a cheesy ending, though.
- CreatorMichael SchurStarsKristen BellWilliam Jackson HarperJameela JamilFour people and their otherworldly frienemy struggle in the afterlife to define what it means to be good.Very funny and poignant.
- DirectorAlex SimmonsStarsDavid GiuntoliFlula BorgClaire CoffeeWhen a former child actor is dumped by his fiancé days before the wedding, his excitable German best man takes him on the honeymoon instead: a backcountry trek in the remote mountains of Oregon.Surprsingly good with a lot of funny dialogue.
- DirectorWilliam EubankStarsKristen StewartVincent CasselMamoudou AthieA crew of oceanic researchers working for a deep sea drilling company try to get to safety after a mysterious earthquake devastates their deepwater research and drilling facility located at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.Of course, it's basically an Alien clone, with The Abyss, Leviathan, and the like thrown in for good measure, but it was actually quite good. One of the better creature features I have seen in a while.
- DirectorDianna AgronPeter ChelsomClaus ClausenStarsKeira KnightleyHelen MirrenLuke WilsonLatest installment of the Cities of Love series (Paris, je t'aime / New York, I Love You / Rio, Eu Te Amo), this collective feature film is made of ten stories of romance set in the German capital.I really liked it. Not as good as the first in the "franchise", Paris, Je T'aime, but vastly better than New York, I Love You and Rio, I Love You. Don't understand the low score.
- CreatorTony BasgallopStarsLauren AmbroseToby KebbellNell Tiger FreeA Philadelphia couple are in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens a door for a mysterious force to enter their home.Didn't know what to expect, but I was hooked from the start. It kept me guessing throughout, and especially Rupert Grint gave a powerhouse performance.
- DirectorDoron PazYoav PazStarsYael GrobglasYon TumarkinDanielle JadelynWhen a couple of American young adults fly to Israel to visit the city of Jerusalem, a biblical nightmare falls upon them.Hand-held horror in, well, Jerusalem.
I dug it, but you'd have to be a fan of the found footage-genre, I think. Mixed some religion and history into it, which I like, even though I'm atheist. - CreatorJason GeorgeStarsPauline EtienneLaurent CapellutoMehmet KurtulusWhen radiation from the sun causes a global disaster on Earth, survivors on an overnight flight from Brussels race from city to city trying to stay ahead of the sun's rays by remaining in the cover of night.I'm not quite sure the scientific aspect of it holds up, but screw that. It starts off with a bang and never lets go. Tense, no filler, edge of your seat-entertainment. At only 6 episodes with the longest being 40 minutes, you won't waste a whole lot of time.
- DirectorJohannes NyholmStarsLeif EdlundYlva GallonKatarina JacobsonAs a couple goes on a trip to find their way back to each other, a sideshow artist and his shady entourage emerge from the woods, terrorizing them, luring them deeper into a maelstrom of psychological terror and humiliating slapstick.It... kept me interested, but I don't think I understood one iota of it.
- DirectorAdam RobitelStarsTaylor RussellLogan MillerJay EllisSix strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive.Fine, I guess, lots of fun visuals, but would have benefitted from less clichéd characters, and more than one semi-sympathetic character.
- DirectorBrandon ChristensenStarsChristie BurkeJesse MossRebecca OlsonMary, a new mother, gives birth to twins, but only one of them is alive. While taking care of her living child, Adam, she suspects that something, a supernatural entity, has chosen him and will stop at nothing to take him from her.A not too bad little horror movie. Nothing ground-breaking, but kept me interested.
- CreatorDavid KajganichMax BorensteinAlexander WooStarsJared HarrisDerek MioTobias MenziesSupernatural, semihistorical, horror anthology series, where each season is inspired by a different infamous or mysterious real life historical tragedy.Season 2. Much better than Season 1, maybe because the stakes this time were personal to the characters.
- DirectorK.C. BascombeStarsKevin ZegersJesse JamesRachel SkarstenTwelve year old Ryan Billings has been diagnosed with an acute fear of the dark. He spends each night lying awake in torment, waiting and watching as the evil in the darkness grows stronger, feeding off his fear. His older brother Dale, suspects that there is nothing wrong with Ryan and that this is just a ploy for more attention. Regardless, he promises to watch over his little brother as their parents head off to a party for the night. Outside a storm rages and when the power goes out, darkness envelops the house. Ryan knows that tonight the evil has finally come to claim him. Dale desperately tries everything to try and calm him down, until the horrors in the dark make him realize Ryan had good reason to be so afraid!Rewatch. Not a "good" movie, really silly, but kinda fun. Although, when you notice that 80% of the dialogue is about the same thing, only worded differently, your face gets a bit tired.
- DirectorMarc FafardStarsDonald SutherlandRodolfo CoriaIf it weren't for a series of cataclysmic events, a comet impact being first on the list, our planet could well still be the domain of dinosaurs. Following Pr Rodolfo Coria, a world-reknown Argentinian paleontologist, we visit sites of major discoveries he has contributed to in Patagonia and travel back in time to see these amazing beasts come to life in 3D. Patagonia has given us the largest living animal to ever walk the Earth: the titanesque plant-eating Argentinosaur, and its nemesis, the Giganotosaur, a bipedal carnivore that could easily challenge the famous T-Rex.
- DirectorChris SparlingStarsRya KihlstedtWilliam MapotherSharon MaughanWhen the US government attempts to weaponize the power of a possessed woman, they soon discover that there are forces that exist in this world that simply cannot be controlled.Another rewatch. Not scary, but an interesting story and well-made.
- DirectorBryan BertinoStarsZoe KazanElla BallentineAaron DouglasA mother and daughter must confront a terrifying monster when they break down on a deserted road.Boring-ass title, but it was actually quite good. It takes its time to let us get to know the characters, but it never drags. The first "big thing" happens around the halfway mark, but it still takes time to slow down. It's atmospheric, the music is never drowning out the action, and the actors, especially the girl, are actually really good.
Yes, its symbolism may be a little on the heavy side, but it's a tense 90 minutes nonetheless. - DirectorGeoffrey OrthweinAndrew SullivanStarsMaika MonroeMatt O'LearyArnar JónssonOn a romantic getaway to Iceland, a young American couple wake up one morning to discover every person on earth has disappeared.Weird little movie. I don't quite know what to think of it.
