- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostKate AshfieldThe uneventful, aimless lives of a London electronics salesman and his layabout roommate are disrupted by the zombie apocalypse. This might (keyword: MIGHT) be a contender for my favourite film, if not, top three. It does an incredible job at blending comedy and horror and is just so much fun in general.
- DirectorIshirô HondaStarsTakashi ShimuraAkihiko HirataAkira TakaradaAfter a dinosaur-like beast - awoken from undersea hibernation by atom bomb testing - ravages Tokyo, a scientist must decide if his similarly dangerous weapon should be used to destroy it.I'm gonna do a binge of all Godzilla movies in the future since I now own nearly all movies (both DVDs and Blu-Rays from the UK, where I live and DVDs that came from the US since they refuse to release most Japanese Kaiju movies on home media in the UK), but this is an amazing start. Engaging story, well-done allegory for the atomic bombs, and great special effects.
- DirectorDavid SilvermanStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter Homer pollutes the town's water supply, Springfield is encased in a gigantic dome by the EPA and the Simpsons are declared fugitives. It's The Simpsons, of course it'll be phenomenal.
- DirectorJohn LafiaStarsAlex VincentJenny AgutterGerrit GrahamWhile Andy's mother is admitted to a psychiatric hospital, the young boy is placed in foster care, and Chucky, determined to claim Andy's soul, is not far behind.I don't have much to say, but this might be my favourite Child's Play movie (either that or the 2019 one).
- DirectorLars KlevbergStarsTim MathesonBen DaonZahra AndersonA mother gives her 13-year-old son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.A very different take on Chucky, but I think it manages to be a genuinely well-done reinterpretation of the source material whilst being an engaging horror movie in it's own rights. Hope we get a sequel to this one since this one opened the door for many possibilities.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsMargot RobbieIdris ElbaJohn CenaSupervillains Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, and a collection of nutty cons at Belle Reve prison join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X as they are dropped off at the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.Whilst I didn't mind 2016's Suicide Squad, this one that film done way better. The only problem is the title, which, for a sequel, is near identical to the first film. It's also a problem with most horror sequels, for some reason, they just have the same name as the first. Why would you call the fifth Scream movie Scream instead of, I don't know, Scream 5? It's not a reboot.
- DirectorJordan Vogt-RobertsStarsTom HiddlestonSamuel L. JacksonBrie LarsonAfter the Vietnam war, a team of scientists explores an uncharted island in the Pacific, venturing into the domain of the mighty Kong and must fight to escape a primal Eden.I love this film's reimagining of King Kong. I think that doing a more original story as part of the MonsterVerse rather than remaking the 1933 film again worked really well here.
- DirectorTrey ParkerStarsTrey ParkerMatt StoneMary Kay BergmanWhen Stan Marsh and his friends go see an R-rated movie, they start cursing and their parents think that Canada is to blame.Easily top three material.
- DirectorDanny LeinerStarsJohn ChoKal PennEthan EmbryA Korean-American office worker and his Indian-American stoner friend embark on a quest to satisfy their desire for White Castle burgers.A really fun(ny) ride that turns a simple story about two stoners getting fast food into a crazy, hilarious adventure. Will definitely be watching the sequels soon.
- DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsChris PrattWill FerrellElizabeth BanksAn ordinary LEGO construction worker, thought to be the prophesied as "special", is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the LEGO universe into eternal stasis. This movie's CGI alone is some of the best I've ever seen. Heck, I thought it was stop-motion the first time I saw it, that's how you know your animation is superb.
The rest of the film is also a masterpiece. - DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsBob HoskinsChristopher LloydJoanna CassidyWhen a cartoon rabbit is accused of murder, he enlists the help of a burnt out private investigator to prove his innocence.I love this movie's ambitious way of combining cartoons with live-action and the result works incredibly well. On top of that, the story and mystery are engaging and the acting is brilliant. A well-deserved classic indeed.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsBill SkarsgårdJaeden MartellFinn WolfhardIn the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.It is good. It is very good.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsJessica ChastainJames McAvoyBill HaderTwenty-seven years after their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, until a devastating phone call brings them back. Can't decide if I like this one or the first better. I'm really hooked by the chemistry between lead characters since they're really well-rounded and there's some really creative visuals in both films. Sometimes they're a bit TOO ridiculous for them to be scary, but nonetheless, they're incredible movies regardless.
- DirectorAndrew AdamsonVicky JensonStarsMike MyersEddie MurphyCameron DiazA mean lord exiles fairytale creatures to the swamp of a grumpy ogre, who must go on a quest and rescue a princess for the lord in order to get his land back. The film that defined DreamWorks Animation.
- DirectorAndrew AdamsonKelly AsburyConrad VernonStarsMike MyersEddie MurphyCameron DiazShrek and Fiona travel to the Kingdom of Far Far Away, where Fiona's parents are King and Queen, to celebrate their marriage. When they arrive, they find they are not as welcome as they thought they would be.As with the It duology, it's hard for me to decide which of the first two I like more. Though whilst I'm more nostalgic for the original, this might be the one I prefer.
- DirectorMike MitchellStarsMike MyersCameron DiazEddie MurphyRumpelstiltskin tricks a mid-life crisis burdened Shrek into allowing himself to be erased from existence and cast in a dark alternate timeline where Rumpelstiltskin rules supreme.Thrilling end to the saga and definitely a step-up from Shrek the Third (that one's fine, but it has it's flaws and is mainly just the least enjoyable one overall).
- DirectorJeff FowlerStarsJames MarsdenJim CarreyBen SchwartzWhen the manic Dr. Robotnik returns to Earth with a new ally, Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic and his new friend Tails is all that stands in their way.It knows what it wants to be and absolutely runs with it. It's not perfect, but hey, no film objectively is. I'm so excited for the third one!
- DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsAnna FarisBill HaderBruce CampbellA local scientist is often regarded as a failure until he invents a machine that can make food fall from the sky. But little does he know that things are about to take a turn for the worst. This may just be because of nostalgia, but this film definitely deserves a mention. Love the animation especially, it's cartoony and over the top, but still works as a CGI movie.
- DirectorPete DocterKemp PowersStarsJamie FoxxTina FeyGraham NortonJoe is a middle-school band teacher whose life hasn't quite gone the way he expected. His true passion is jazz. But when he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul. It's really different from most others, but I think the uniqueness not only adds to this movie, but it's so well-told and well-made that it truly deserves a spot here.
- DirectorRichard DonnerStarsSean AstinJosh BrolinJeff CohenA group of young misfits called The Goonies discover an ancient map and set out on an adventure to find a legendary pirate's long-lost treasure.A definite classic. Has a really adventurous feeling to it that captures the feeling of kids going on adventures together.
- DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives. The concept of a world inside the arcade machines is a fantastic one, and this film utilises that potential to it's fullest. Too bad the sequel kinda sucks, but we still have this gem.
- DirectorJohn LasseterStarsTom HanksTim AllenDon RicklesA cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman action figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's bedroom. One of my childhood movies, and it has aged flawlessly.
- DirectorJohn LasseterAsh BrannonLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackWhen Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends set out on a rescue mission to save Woody before he becomes a museum toy property with his roundup gang Jessie, Prospector, and Bullseye. This used to be the weakest Toy Story film in my eyes (still really liked it though), but on rewatch, it's debatably a little bit better than the first for me.
- DirectorLee UnkrichStarsTom HanksTim AllenJoan CusackThe toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.Probably my favourite of the Toy Story movies.
If you're wondering about Toy Story 4, I enjoy it, but I also understand the hate it gets. - DirectorPete DocterDavid SilvermanLee UnkrichStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanMary GibbsIn order to power the city, monsters have to scare children so that they scream. However, the children are toxic to the monsters, and after a child gets through, two monsters realize things may not be what they think. One of the best animated ones, for sure.
- DirectorDan ScanlonStarsBilly CrystalJohn GoodmanSteve BuscemiA look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends. This may seem like a stretch, especially when comparing it to the original, but man, it's such a blast in my eyes, and definitely pretty underrated.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsSam NeillLaura DernJeff GoldblumA pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.Still can't believe it took me until only around the end of last year to see this in full. Either way, an absolute must-see classic.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsJeff GoldblumJulianne MoorePete PostlethwaiteA research team is sent to the Jurassic Park Site B island to study the dinosaurs there, while an InGen team approaches with another agenda.I think this may be my favourite Jurassic movie, either that or the first one, it's hard to decide.
- DirectorBrad BirdStarsEli MarienthalHarry Connick Jr.Jennifer AnistonA young boy befriends a giant robot from outer space that a paranoid government agent wants to destroy.Another masterpiece that I procrastinated on for too long.
- DirectorEric DarnellTom McGrathStarsChris RockBen StillerDavid SchwimmerA group of animals who have spent all their life in a New York zoo end up in the jungles of Madagascar, and must adjust to living in the wild. This may also be because of nostalgia, but I don't care, I love this movie.
- DirectorEric DarnellTom McGrathStarsBen StillerChris RockDavid SchwimmerThe Madagascar animals fly back to New York City, but crash-land on an African nature reserve in Kenya, where they meet others of their own kind, and Alex especially discovers his royal heritage as prince of a lion pride. Not as nostalgic for this one as the first, but it's still a damn fine sequel.
- DirectorPeter LordNick ParkStarsMel GibsonJulia SawalhaPhil DanielsWhen a cockerel apparently flies into a chicken farm, the chickens see him as an opportunity to escape their evil owners.Top 5 (animated) material. Hopefully the sequel lives up to this one.
- DirectorMark OsborneJohn StevensonStarsJack BlackIan McShaneAngelina JolieTo everyone's surprise, including his own, Po, an overweight, clumsy panda, is chosen as protector of the Valley of Peace. His suitability will soon be tested as the valley's arch-enemy is on his way.The 2000s decade had so many incredible animated films.
- DirectorJennifer Yuh NelsonStarsJack BlackAngelina JolieJackie ChanPo and his friends fight to stop a peacock villain from conquering China with a deadly new weapon, but first the Dragon Warrior must come to terms with his past.Like Toy Story 2, this also used to be my least favourite one (damn have my opinions changed over the years), but now it's a tad better than the first one in my eyes.
- DirectorAlessandro CarloniJennifer Yuh NelsonStarsJack BlackBryan CranstonDustin HoffmanContinuing his "legendary adventures of awesomeness", Po must face two hugely epic, but different threats: one supernatural and the other a little closer to home.Debatably the weakest of the three, but still a fantastic follow-up. Hopefully the fourth can maintain the high quality of the first three.
- DirectorStephen HillenburgMark OsborneStarsTom KennyJeffrey TamborRodger BumpassSpongeBob takes leave from Bikini Bottom in order to track down, with Patrick, King Neptune's stolen crown. It's got some minor flaws (such as the deus ex machinas), but it's another classic.
- DirectorPaul TibbittMike MitchellStarsTom KennyAntonio BanderasBill FagerbakkeWhen a diabolical pirate above the sea steals the secret Krabby Patty formula, SpongeBob and his friends team up in order to get it back.I'm running out of things to say.
- DirectorTom McGrathStarsWill FerrellJonah HillBrad PittEvil genius Megamind finally defeats his do-gooder nemesis, Metro Man, but is left without a purpose in a superhero-free world.Penis music.
- DirectorEric DarnellTim JohnsonLawrence GutermanStarsWoody AllenSharon StoneGene HackmanA rather neurotic ant tries to break from his totalitarian society while trying to win the affection of the princess he loves.Love the grittier feel of this one in particular. Hardly any computer-animated movies like this one, which is what makes it so special.
Damn, DreamWorks has so many classics. - DirectorBrad BirdStarsCraig T. NelsonSamuel L. JacksonHolly HunterWhile trying to lead a quiet suburban life, a family of undercover superheroes are forced into action to save the world.Ditto for Pixar. Probably my favourite film from them actually.
- DirectorJohn LasseterJoe RanftStarsOwen WilsonBonnie HuntPaul NewmanOn the way to the biggest race of his life, a hotshot rookie race car gets stranded in a rundown town and learns that winning isn't everything in life.Another classic from Pixar. The way this universe works a few raises questions, but I don't mind at all.
- DirectorTrey ParkerStarsTrey ParkerMatt StoneElle RussPopular Broadway actor Gary Johnston is recruited by the elite counter-terrorism organization Team America: World Police. As the world begins to crumble around him, he must battle with terrorists, celebrities and falling in love. From the creators of South Park.
That's how you know it'll be good. - DirectorGil KenanStarsMitchel MussoSam LernerSpencer LockeThree teens discover that their neighbor's house is really a living, breathing, scary monster. The perfect horror movie to show to kids. The motion-capture animation surprisingly works here too.
- DirectorRobert HughesDan PovenmireJay LenderStarsVincent MartellaAshley TisdaleThomas Brodie-SangsterPhineas and Ferb discover that Perry is a secret agent, and they all get stuck in an alternate dimension where Doofenschmirtz is the ruler of the tri-state area.I'm actually marathoning Phineas and Ferb in its entirety, so this was a treat.
- DirectorRaja GosnellStarsFreddie Prinze Jr.Sarah Michelle GellarMatthew LillardThe Mystery Inc. gang must save Coolsville from an attack of their past monsters brought to life by an evil masked figure trying to take down the gang. The best Scooby-Doo movie (at least in my opinion).
Yeah, I said it. - DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.Proof that you can still make a movie chilling with little gore and jumpscares.
