Henry Selick's 2009 film "Coraline" was unique in the history of animation in that it was the first stop-motion feature to use 3-D printers to construct its maquettes. For Selick's 1993 hit "The Nightmare Before Christmas," each character's individual face had to be hand-sculpted separately, requiring boxes and boxes of various Jack Skellington heads. 3-D printing for "Coraline" sped up the process and allowed the animators a wider variety of faces for the titular bratty girl and the terrifying adults in her life.
The story of "Coraline" was taken from Neil Gaiman's 2002 children's horror novel, itself heavily cribbing from Clive Barker's 1992 novel "The Thief of Always." In the film, Coraline (Dakota Fanning) moves with her parents to a remote house out in the middle of the woods. Coraline makes no mystery of how much she hates the move, how...

March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that the day Kurt Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for Disney, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what are Kurt Russell’s best movies? To celebrate his 73rd birthday, let’s dig into them here.

Actor Charlize Theron got her first major film role when she was just 19-years-old. But she credited her own naivete as a youth for nabbing her the breakthrough feature.
Charlize Theron once explained how she starred in ‘2 Days in the Valley’ Charlize Theron | Stephane Cardinale – Corbis/Getty Images
Apart from her ability, Theron had a good amount of luck on her side when she was cast in 2 Days in the Valley. But fortune didn’t always smile down on the Oscar-winner. Before acting, Theron pursued a modeling career. In the end, however, she felt she was too tall to succeed in the industry.
“I was too tall, too big, too late for the supermodel look of the 80s. Kate Moss and all the tiny, grungy girls had just become fashionable, and I didn’t fit the bill,.” she once told HuffPost.

Sarah Jessica Parker already knew what it was like starring in a hit show with Sex and the City. But the actor considered the show fortunate it didn’t air at the same time another popular show did. Parker believed that her HBO series wouldn’t have stood a chance against it.
Sarah Jessica Parker felt ‘Sex and the City’ would’ve been squashed by ‘Desperate Housewives’ Felicity Huffman, Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria and Marcia Cross | Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic
Parker felt there wasn’t much of a competition between Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives. On the surface level, the two shows seemed to have quite a bit in common. They both focused on a cast of women and their day-to-day lives as they dealt with friendships, dating, families and careers. But they had stark differences as well.

Norman Lear, who recently passed away at the age of 101, transformed the network television sitcom in the 1970s by confronting America's cultural contentiousness head-on and daring viewers to laugh at a bigot like Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" or the white-folks-hating George Jefferson on "The Jeffersons." People were more than ready to accept this challenge. "All in the Family" was the top-rated show on television for six of its nine seasons, while "The Jeffersons" ranked in the top 10 for four of its remarkable 11 seasons. Along with "Good Times," "Sanford and Son," "Maude," "One Day at a Time" and "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear basically dominated the decade. It was a creative hot streak that's never been matched and one that Lear could never replicate.
After the 1978 premiere of "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear went ice cold. "The Baxters" and "Palmerstown, USA" only hung around for two seasons, while "Hanging In" and "aka...

On Sunday, Dean Cain walked the red carpet at the 91st Hollywood Christmas Parade – but many fans didn’t recognize him after his significant weight gain.
Dressed in a black suit with a festive pink tie, the actor caught the public’s attention due to his new portly look in contrast to his appearance in his TV role in the 90s.
Cain, 57, gained prominence through his role alongside Teri Hatcher in the television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which aired on ABC from 1993 to 1997.
Cain went on to take the role of real-life detective James ‘Woody’ Woods in the film Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer in 2018. The movie was based on the true story of Kermit Gosnell, an abortion doctor from Pennsylvania who was convicted of the murder of three infants after their live births and involuntary manslaughter of a pregnant woman under his care,...

Who wouldn't want to spend Christmas at the Chalet?
Teri Hatcher was lovely to experience in a film like this, and frankly, it's so refreshing to have films exploring women in their 50s versus the usual fare of 20s-30s.
Much like A Christmas Spark, following along with a "middle-aged" love story was most enjoyable.
It's also a sign that in all the ways the network has been diversifying its content, it's especially making some tailor-made projects that cater to the exact age demographic that likely tunes in for Lifetime and its Christmas slate most.
As a fan favorite, Teri Hatcher is a great person to helm a film like this.
She has that quirky leading woman quality that makes you always root for her, something she exuded well during her Desperate Housewives days.
In many ways, Christmas at the Chalet could've taken things further and in a different direction...

The science fiction genre continues to thrill television audiences after more than 70 years, taking viewers to different worlds and exploring far-out concepts. However, just because the genre boasts rich storytelling potential and spectacle, it is, of course, not at all immune to the dangers of a sudden cancellation. In an era when even an early renewal order can't guarantee subsequent episodes, that means some sci-fi shows end on cliffhangers, never to be given a satisfying conclusion.
With the stakes often so high for sci-fi television, that makes these unresolved plot threads all the more frustrating for fans following a series and invested in the characters. From being stranded across time and space to fan-favorite characters faced with mortal peril, these cliffhangers threaten to overshadow a show's legacy. Here are the biggest television cliffhangers in the sci-fi genre that were left unresolved by cancelations from the studios or networks producing them.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
Netflix has taken an odd approach to promoting Elite Season 7.
We've had random teasers on social media that haven't given much of the plot away,
Now, three days before its premiere date, we have a full-length promo that teases what's on the horizon.
Off the bat, I'm not interested in going back to Las Encinas.
Bringing Omar Ayuso back made me think that a change of scenery was on the menu.
Unfortunately, that isn't the case.
We see that Omar is still trying to piece together his thoughts about Samuel's death at the end of Elite Season 5.
New cast members for Elite Season 7 include Mirela Balic, Gleb Abrosimov, Nadia Al Saidi, Fernando Líndez, Alejandro Albarracín, Iván Mendes, and Maribel Verdú.
They join Elite Season 6 cast members Valentina Zenere, Andre Lamoglia, Carmen Arrufat, Alex Pastrana, Alvaro de Juana,...

Phyllis Coates, who became television’s first Lois Lane when she was cast in the classic Adventures of Superman series starring George Reeves, died yesterday of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills. She was 96.
Her death was announced by daughter Laura Press to our sister publication The Hollywood Reporter.
Born Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell in Wichita Falls, Texas, on January 15, 1927, Coates and her family later moved to Hollywood. Along with some vaudeville-style performances, Coates launched her showbix career as a chorus girl during the 1940s, often touring the the Uso. Later in the decade, she landed small roles in such pictures as Smart Girls Don’t Talk and My Foolish Heart (1949), and appeared in a series of “Joe McDoakes” comedy shorts as Alice MacDoakes.

Phyllis Coates, the first actress to play Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane on television, only to leave the Adventures of Superman after just one season, has died. She was 96.
Coates, who also appeared in Republic Pictures serials and in such films as I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, died Wednesday of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, her daughter Laura Press told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Coates first portrayed the headstrong Lois opposite George Reeves as the Man of Steel in the dark sci-fi movie Superman and the Mole Men (1951).
The success of that Lippert Pictures film — the first full-length theatrical feature starring the comic-book hero — led to the quick decision to start production on a syndicated show for television.

Since 1967, the Best Comedy Actress Primetime Emmy category has seen 13 direct costar showdowns involving seven different combinations of female leads. While this list is four entries longer than the corresponding male roster, the category still falls significantly behind the other 10 lead or supporting ones, all of which boast cast mate battle totals of at least 20. Scroll through our chronological photo gallery to learn more about the 13 cases of dual or triple nominations in the Best Comedy Actress category.
Unlike the Best Comedy Actor list, this female one includes more than just pairs of clashing costars. After “The Golden Girls” actresses Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White blazed a trail in 1986 as the first trio of performers to receive same-year nominations for a single continuing series (and repeated the feat three more times), they were emulated by “Desperate Housewives” stars Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, and Felicity Huffman in 2005. Desperate Housewives delivered no shortage of drama, both on and off the screen. The soapy ABC series was known both for its juicy plotlines and feuds among the cast. The on-set tension even extended to those who weren’t in front of the camera, according to writer Patty Lin, who worked on the show in its first season.

The Daniel Craig era of James Bond movies started strong with Martin Campbell's "Casino Royale" in 2006. Audiences reacted incredibly well to the gruffer, more brutal version of the character, as he fit handily into the world's post-9/11 political hopelessness. A dandyish cartoon James Bond did not fit into the zeitgeist of the '00s, and the character became Dionysian and brutish rather than Apollonian and refined.
The Craig Bond films also introduced a novel concept into the franchise: each film was a direct sequel of the one that preceded it. Ordinarily, Bond films stood on their own, not requiring much knowledge of the films that came before. Now, bad guys could be set up in one picture only to pay off in a later chapter.

“Succession” is no stranger to the Emmys. A two-time Best Drama Series winner, the HBO show from creator Jesse Armstrong is gunning for a third win in the category for its fourth and final season, which concluded in May. But it could easily pick up a number of other Emmys along the way. On Wednesday, the show received a staggering 27 nominations, 14 of which were in the acting categories as it tied the acting nominations record it set last year. In doing so, the show made history as the first drama series to earn three nominations for Best Drama Actor in the same year.
Although his role was reduced this season, Brian Cox received his third nomination for portraying Logan Roy, the demanding patriarch of the wealthy Roy family whose death early in the final season initially united his children but created much inner turmoil with regards to who would take...

‘Desperate Housewives’ star Eva Longoria says the long-running TV hit show would be cancelled in this era for its racy and controversial themes. As per Deadline, Longoria, 48, told Entertainment Tonight that the show had story lines that would cause outrage today.
Longoria played Gabrielle Solis, an ex-model in an unhappy marriage, in the show.
“I don’t know if we could do the show today,” she said. “I think we’d get cancelled. I mean, not cancelled on TV, but like cancelled in culture, because it was so groundbreaking. We said and did so many things that were shocking at the time.”
Despite that, Longoria said she wouldn’t mind a reboot. “I’d be the first one to sign up. I’d probably be the only one.”
Longoria was part of the ensemble that included Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer), Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) and Marcia Cross (Bree van de Kamp) in the show.

The James Bond franchise was led by actor Pierce Brosnan in the 90s and early 2000s. After his departure from the series, however, Brosnan felt his Bond films might have left a lot to be desired.
One area Brosnan would’ve liked to see his movies improve upon had been his sex scenes.

Happy Emmy season, “you clock-watching fucks” — Logan Roy is still leading the way.
Brian Cox has submitted his performance as Logan Roy, the recently departed Waystar Royco CEO on HBO’s “Succession,” into the lead actor (drama) category. Cox’s team exclusively confirmed to Variety that the actor’s iconic turn as the bold father and media mogul will be considered alongside his two co-stars, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin, who opted to switch into the category for the show’s fourth and final season.
Cox’s character died in the third episode of this season, “Connor’s Wedding,” which left many pundits speculating the Scottish actor, who received two previous noms in the lead drama actor field, would downgrade to either the supporting actor or guest categories. That won’t be the case, which puts the drama series uniquely positioned to make history in several ways.

Hailing from “Nightmare Before Christmas” director Henry Selick, the film is an adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novella of the same name and follows a young girl who discovers a parallel universe with sinister versions of her parents. Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher and Keith David lead the voice cast. This one’s a treat for kids and adults alike,...

“I’m gonna be judged! I’m an actor. We don’t like that!” These are the amusing first words of Golden Globe-winning acting legend John Lithgow when he appeared on Celebrity Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off back in 2019.
And he’s got a point. Because, aside from the fact most Hollywood stars have a packed schedule, an over-protective agent and about 356 daily requests to do something for one charity or another, they also have famously fragile egos after years in the spotlight.
And let’s face it: even their most scathing one-star review has nothing on Paul Hollywood taking one beady-blue-eyed look at their lovingly crafted gingerbread diorama of Westminster Abbey, before saying “You want me to eat that? Brett Goldstein is keeping his early stand-up under wraps for good reason.
The “Ted Lasso” star teased that his comedy from years ago is kept under lock and key and essentially wiped from the Internet amid modern cancel culture.
“I made a series of decisions that, further down the road, turned out to be the wrong ones, which have haunted me,” Goldstein told GQ UK. “I did shows before anyone knew who I was and I didn’t think ahead in terms of…I was just making the thing that was right at the time.”
The “Thor: Love and Thunder” actor added, “But they’re all things that are often about truth and about real people and I can’t just have them on the Internet. I’m very proud of them, but unfortunately, I can never show them.”
One 2013 stand-up set included a bit about Goldstein swearing off pornography...

In the 16 years since 22-year-old America Ferrera was honored by the Screen Actors Guild for her work on “Ugly Betty,” she has held tight to the record for youngest individual SAG Award winner for TV. Until this year she was also the youngest nominee in the history of the comedy actress category, but she has now been bumped down a spot by 20-year-old “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega. If Ortega triumphs on her bid, she will not only break Ferrera’s winning record but also land in second place behind Kate Winslet on the list of youngest solo SAG Award recipients for film or TV acting.
Ortega is the youngest 2023 comedy actress contender by a margin of 12 years. Included among her challengers are concurrent ensemble nominees Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Jean Smart (“Hacks”), the former of whom stands with Ortega as a SAG Awards newcomer. Smart is seeking her second...
